Tell me about the time you were "fired" for taking a vacation that your boss approved?

That actually does look beautiful
What are you verifying?
For those out of the loop, who are the billionaire programmer and C royalty people in this link?
Dig a deep, deep pit and bury it all?
Build a really tall pipe and push it all into space?
Maybe... But isn't your view also very dismissive of their experience and the constraints and context of their experience?
By far, most companies above a certain size do not operate in a way where these principles do not apply.
It is still a feature in Vivaldi, Opera's spiritual successor.
Wikipedia agrees
'The station uses New Zealand time (UTC+12 during standard time and UTC+13 during daylight saving time) since all flights to McMurdo station depart from Christchurch and, therefore, all official travel from the pole goes through New Zealand.'

Do you have the link by any chance?
Haven't used it but it sounds like this feature would work?
That's how they are delimited in India and the author is probably from there.
This is incredible!
Great job building this and also writing the documentation that explains concepts as well as how they are implemented.
I can't believe how many comments here are dismissive. If you are happy using a paid solution to manage your finances and don't want to get into the weeds yourself, you are probably not the target audience for this.
One suggestion would be to make the country-specific pieces like tax calculations module so others can contribute their own.
What happened in 1992?
Is there even a hydrogen turbojet engine?
I thoroughly enjoyed this piece. Going to an onsen can at first be a bit daunting with all the rules and etiquette, but it was definitely worth it.
Sitting in a hot onsen while it's snowing, peacefully in the middle of nature.. it was an incredible experience.
This CICS? https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/CICS
Could you elaborate?
It's confusing, because people generally don't ride bulls. Where I'm from you gently back off from both bulls and bears.
Did your manager share a reasoning for why they shouldn't call you John?
how hard is it to pay in cash or to get service as anything but a light skinned person in a japan convenience store?
There is close to zero overt racism of the sort you're referring to.
In almost any Japanese customer service situation involving big companies, the smiles and friendly demeanor are mostly a facade for a very transactional relationship.
Glad to see the part 2. Part 1 generated some interest on HN too - https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=36277962
I'm sure it gets the job done but how was the quality?
The Large Scale Store Act of 1973
Now, the small businesses could slow down the large businesses by 4-5 years or even completely freeze them out.
Sounds like the law of unintended consequences caught up with them.
If not for this law, they would have only had to contend with a few large shopping centers. Instead they now have to deal with one (much better) convenience store on practically every street!
It's up for debate how productive Japan's companies really are.
Studies show it is one of the least productive/efficient among developed economies, with all the unnecessary meetings, lack of quick decision-making, and outdated processes.
Don't think GP equated employees to lower class servants in their comment?
That is a weird response. What next? Ban walking near the exits? Or standing near the doors?
"Very few people know that I had to do that thing which no business owner should ever do – lay people off. And I've had to do it twice."
The difference in how other countries view laying people off, contrasted with the US labor market is worth highlighting.
I understand the arguments about how at-will employment brings flexibility and opportunity for both employers and employees but seeing a CEO feel actually responsible for his employees in a downsizing is refreshing.

When would I use Baremaps versus something like GeoServer?
Why wouldn't they be? They still use the same 12 notes that correspond to keys on a harmonium.
It is expensive to be poor.
