You can, of course, ask them for anything and see if they offer.

From someone who's organized multiple meetups in NYC, Hack And Tell being the most well-known, I would say just start the meetup. There's a high probability of lots of people in NYC thinking in the same direction you're thinking, but what you want to do is start letting them know there is a place they can find like-minded people.

Further, meetup will help get eyes on the event. They've been very helpful for my meetups. They're even willing to host them and buy beer / pizza for the attendees.

You'll know within a few months if it's not speaking to people, but more importantly, you'll know if the opposite is true.

I think it could work in theory, but the risks appear to be higher. I speculate that it's easier to build a successful TV series than it is to build a popular record.

I'm no expert in the music industry, but I've played in multiple bands, gone on national tours, and have friends who are legit rock stars so I know a thing or two. But like I said, the above is speculation and I'm no expert.

I run three meetups and know a bunch of the folks that work there. They are extremely fair minded people. Fairer than I am myself. Given what I know of the people, the service, and my experience hosting three meetups, this story doesn't feel right.

Meetup has done a lot to bolster the tech community in NYC. I have met almost all of my tech friends in NYC via meetups. Meetup employees even come to some of my meetups. I know for a fact that they care about creating positive environments where attendees are not bombarded by commercial interests. They want you to go kayaking with other kayakers, talk about programming with programmers, or find out how to cook fantastic vegan food with other vegans.

False positives sometimes occur and it's a shame. Perhaps meetup could've been more proactive before shutting the group down. I personally feel confident that meetup looked at the group and made a fair decision that it was indeed violating the terms of service.

If folks would prefer to use eventbrite, obviously do so. Eventbrite has no community building tools. It is a website for tickets. Meetup, on the other hand, cares so much about building communities that their whole site is built for this purpose. You will lose that.

That's exactly how the company got started. They sold DOS before they even owned it.

Because he expresses uncertainty in more than one of his take-aways. He uses stronger language when he has more confidence in the idea.

"This may have..." or "I believe" or "this seems" all suggest he isn't stating fact and is instead thinking out loud about the possible implications of his experience.

In other words: it's obvious the author knows he is reflecting on anecdotes.

Keek might make a reasonable example of something do ewhere between facetime and instagram. It's a lot like instagram, but the medium is <36s long videos.
