just cancelled my hulu/disney bundle and requested to delete my disney account which was processed immediately and was very easy to find.

deleting the hulu account took me effort, had to search for it and log into a special site and only a submit request to yet to be processed.

so actually props to disney for not being user hostile.

people here keep saying that this is targeted at big companies/corporations. the big company that i work for explicitly block uploads of data to these services and we're forbidden to put anything company related in there for many reasons, even if you use your own account, we don't have 'company accounts'.

so no, i can't see companies getting all excited about buying $250mo/user licenses for their employees for google or chatgpt to suck in their proprietary data.

last week i broke down and bought the 20$ subscription because i was excel lazy and wanted to see what supposedly state of the art AI could do to help me parse my kids baseball team's statistic... and boy am i confident more than ever that humanity is not doomed and there won't be AI taking over jobs anytime soon.

the amount of time i spend typing out "you've changed something i didn't ask" is incredible, the only positive i get is that it's fun to verbally abuse AI for how inaccurate and deliberate with errors it is.

i would not take a single answer from chatgpt without actually doing a sanity check. if it throws up on an excel that has 12x30 data matrix of one dimensional data, i couldn't imagine the garbage it spews out if you're using it to modify something actually business essential.

that's literally no different than what Google Maps does in my car while in CarPlay mode. It's like Apple neuters it and don't give it full gyro/compass data, because when driving it constantly moves the "car" anywhere from 90 to 270 degress and keeps it there for a few seconds until it figures this out again. I checked all possible permissions and still can't figure it out.

Never happens on the Apple Maps, although I have 0 trust in siri and apple maps, especially when we travel to europe, i feel like i'm an experiment for apple to see how much off straight forward route it can make me take.

yes, what you're talking about is true for the supplier side, but it's still not accurate for A/C mfg. operators own the a/c and all the associated bits that would end up getting sent out for service, and they're the ones that are paying service fees to those OEM suppliers that supplied the A/C in the first place.

these day's there's not many "parts" outside of fuselage and flight IP that someone like Boeing/EMB, etc. owns that wasn't outsourced:engines, air data system, actuations, cabin, flight controls, landing gear, etc.. THere's nothing really that the A/C mfg could "service" to ever make back a 300mil airframe. the A/C sell for the fixed cost, sometimes the operator gets to select their own engine, but othewise they buy it for cash, not for future services. boeing and other A/Cs would not survive on maintenance plans because there's very little they actually maintain.

the above is absolutely true on the commercial engine side, especially for government subsidized companies such as RR... there is a big contention against RR's practices but most mfgs still give the engines at a very large discount, not negative. i don't think it's true for the actual airframe, the numbers would be completely off and airframe does not have the same going back to the factory for refurb requirements.

during development and going into first flight, it was fairly open discussion that israel 'was' an original partner whom was funded by usa, and thus why israeli flag was not on the a/c during promo but israel and their tech companies had input into development.

many times it was also discussed that israeli pilots would ask to have their engines deliver above spec thrust, sort of like tunning your turbo car... it created a whole logistical black hole but it certainly was technically possible. perhaps 15 years later someone finally figure out how to cater to that market.

this is another distraction product from apple's core that took away resources, time and overall effort of maintain the base product at the expense of branching out and growth chasing.

i never understood TV+ and used to get it for a long time, until the latest price increase, as part of the apple one package. and we still never watched it. it seems there are some hard core fans of the limited content, but to me apple was always like 'disney' and disney already has a phenomenal family-wide content for relatively stupid cheap, why apple would think they can take that on was beyond me.

why is your tool so hard to use on ios? the website instructions say you need a companion siri shortcut, but no where is there actually a shortcut listed.

the only way i interact with any facebook property is still with instagram and only through my safari browser running a plethora of adblocks that sometime give me connection issues -- probably 30% of the time i can't log in -- which is fine and forces me into a break.

i downloaded the app once because i had to reverify myself for reasons above, and it felt like i saw 5 ads, or suggested posts for people that i don't follow for every single picture from someone that i actually care about. most of the crap was videos, and i guess i'm old school and still only use/care for instagram as a photo utility.

that's not cropping, that's resizing -- you're resizing the aspect ratio of your image from its natural dimensions to 8x10. cropping would be if you cropped your image to only show 10% of that image...

i don't know how old you/your moms are, but chances are that even if you're younger your moms' mom probably did that because she was taking pictures with something like kodachrome 64 than unless you're in the sun it ended up having 0 shadow detail. so it was better to have a least a squinting picture of a kid than have half their face be complete darkness.

this is like a rambling of a mad man, it reminds me of the many, many posts on any XXX photo gear forum where majority of the time people will dedicate their time arguing about edge sharpness performance of lenses or pixel peeping and only a small portion of the forum is dedicated to actual pictures, and when you see those pictures you quickly close out of the forum because 99% are visually just not interesting.

use the auto mode and don't worry about it. if you acutally want to have some control then learn the relationship between shutter speed, aperture and ISO. I learned this very long time ago through a Sunny 16 rule on my Leica M6 and outdoors during the day that rule works just fine with today's digital cameras that have 8+ stops of dynamic range anyways.

otherwise photography is about in interesting picture. unless you crop it so much that it's so pixilated that it hurts your eyes no one will scrutinize it or chastise the photographer that they took it with a tripod or cropped it and this article is just a gigantic self serving vent that really doesn't give anyone any better advice on photos.

some things that have served me well for 20+ years since exactly your age

1)start investing the federal maximum pre-tax into your 401K. if you can't do the max, invest at least a minimum of your company's match. if there is no match, try to do at least 5-10K. 1a) put it all into an SP500 fund, or at least never put it into the age 20## type funds. 1b) if your work offers anything else that can be purchased through them such as vacation, insurance, etc., do it all through them as that's typically all pre-tax.

2)if you need a car, never buy a car that's more than 3x your yearly salary. if you can make it 4x even better.

3)don't rush to buy a property, expecially at today's rates. if it does come to a point that you're buying a property don't buy a property, don't go above 4x your yearly salary. i suspect that won't be much at 21 and i suspect the bank advisor will tell you the good news that you're pre-approved for much more, but until you (and your eventual spouse) can meet the 4x level, don't buy a property. 3a) this advise is worth exactly what you've paid for it. there are a gazzilion nuances such as do you need a car if you have a house/condo in a place where you can walk/take bus to work and everywhere else, what are the property taxes? it's one thing to have 2000$ mortgage and it's another to realize that you're paying another 1000$ in taxes before utilities, etc.

4)work-life-balance: it's extremely important to use all your vacation and have overall balance when you can get away from work and recharge.

i'd think the "cocktail ice" criteria would be to be 100% clear. I make my own ice, usually in the winter, because it's fun when it's -20 outside and i stock pile it in a deep freezer for the remainder of the year.

process: + fill a small cooler almost to the top with water + leave the lid open and leave the cooler outside over night, or 2 nights, depends on the size + *key*: you want to remove the ice from the cooler before it freezes all the way through, ideally you want ~2 inches of water left on the bottom unfrozen. ice freezes from top to bottom, so all the air and impurities keep getting pushed down. this top layer will pretty much be perfect, you may have to wash off the top layer due to frost/snow that have accumulated over night. +. take your new slap of ice and score it with a bread cutting serrated knife, tap the knife with a wooden spoon and you'll have a perfect cut of a of a huge chuck of ice. keep serrating/hitting into smaller chunks.

gmail discouraged me from using it a few years back when they insisted on scanning my emails for "purchases" and then would log these items somewhere in my history graph. interestingly enough, you could delete almost all history but the purchase history. what especially rubbed me the wrong way that it would list some medicine on there, and even though i didn't even purchase it through google they insisted on keeping that record in there permanently at their discretion.

i immediately moved over all 10+ of history to a new provider, set up an OOO and an auto forward to the new email. all "real" people would read the OOO and write to the new email, so now whatever's in gmail is a bot infested ad stuff.

you know your first two sentences aren't really honest. there's the secondary market, considering that apple keeps updating their devices past typical android equivalent you're getting same $/years of use value. there are SE models that are in line to cheaper android alternatives.

and to answer your 3rd question -- i'll bite and say that this maybe true. but is it really apple's problem or the problem overall? where we're all mined for data and now when someone does offer security you scream that it's unfair. shouldn't you take the equivalent effort and write your legislator and ask them what they're doing about bringing the bar to the level that apple is bringing it to, for all of the poor people out there?

i'm speaking from the perspective of the mass consumer and thus am comparing them to other mass consumer product companies.

what you're describing is not the norm and those options should always be available, but the effort to value is simply not there to large portions of the mobile users.

my comment was not against someone 100% paranoid using grapheOS and doing their own backups somewhere and trying to figure out how to get a good google maps alternative in open source.

my comment was that against main stream companies apple leads the way, and it's overall great for a consumer.

do you personally expect every piece of open source software? do you run your own email servers, music servers, photo backups, etc.? If not, you somehow trust those companies -- why?

so did apple, you could encrypt through iTunes for decade, and if you're that paranoid about encrypted backups i would trust an off-line encrypted backup more than i would an encrypted backup in google's cloud.

"most can't and won't take advantage" of it is a broad statement. i would think there are a lot more DAC/lighting adapters and analog headphones in the world than there are of AirPods, anyone that wants to listen to CD (16/44) quality can probably do so for free or a few $ already. my home "hi-fi" now consists of an old iPhone 8+ hooked up to a DAC piped into my receiver utilizing 24/96 setting from iTunes, no longer need for Tidal or Qobuz.

ok, i may buy your argument from a perspective of a brand new cloud storage provider that's try to come up online and break into the market, but you're telling me that Dropbox, OneDrive, Box., etc., are all indie developers living in their parent's basements? These companies made a conscious choice not to offer encryption and now got the rug pulled out from under them. steve jobs famously said that this "Storage" is just a feature, not a product, and now they've proved it.

additionally, as far as i can see, those apps all free to download and you can buy their plans outside of the apple ecosystem and thus they get a free ride in the App Store without giving away any cut to apple.

this announcement is huge in multiple ways:

1) they just ate every other 3rd party "secure" backup services lunch just like they did to the Hi-Res music industry.

2) details of what they backup securely, besides photos (which is top priority for me): iCloud Drive: Includes Pages, Keynote, and Numbers documents, PDFs, Safari downloads, or any other files manually or automatically saved to iCloud Drive.

3)BUT, perhaps the BIGGEST news here is that Apple is making a backup statement to what they've been saying for years and what they've recently gotten negative attention on: They don't want your data. They're not Goodle/FB/Amazon. They're giving you 2TB+ of space and you can encrypt it to the point that you'll lose your data and they don't care -- they don't want to mine your data, they don't want to know what you store on there, the don't care to scan your pictures with AI 20 different ways, they don't want to monetize it, etc, etc., just pay them money for their service and transactionally they give you only thing that you want in return -- reliable, secure, private service.

seriously, anyone at this point advocating for any other phone/os/service out there besides apple is really going out of their way to swim up river.
