Is it really an affordable situation with the current pricing of the RPI to setup a computer cafe for the kids who don't have access to the computers and internet ?

I guess everyone has a point in life they realise they are not in the same mental state they want to be in. Growing up with lot of issues in the family and financial trouble. I kind of dumped me into work head first and used that as a tool to distract myself from everything around me. No social life. No hanging out with the friends, family or co workers.

While I did good at work I was kind of viewed as the serious person whom you don't go to for small talk. On top of that added up more responsibility with our necessarily getting more benefits( since am not that fun person to hang out with or to be around) This put me in an eternal state of anxiety with every increasing load of work and my issues compounding.

It finally led to a burnout of massive level where I started hating my work and gave up reading or writing anything technical. I couldn't force myself to even write a small program. I constantly doubted myself. Kicked myself for all the small things and abused myself literally.

Then finally I came to terms and took a break. Accepted that work is just another part of the whole life. No one dies if I don't work for a day or fail to deliver the project. But, there are people in my life who get worried if I don't call them in a week. Its good to have the around and value them.

Again, don't have any practical solutions but you need to know the value of the things you are dealing with. You need to prioritise them at each level.

“The 3 most harmful addictions are cocaine, carbohydrates and a monthly salary” says Nassim Taleb in his book black swan. I guess the first sale from the product you built also goes in the same line but in a positive way!

I love wikipedia as much as anybody I have known. I currently don't donate but would love to once my situation changes. Their donation request is the most horrible one I have seen. They should definitely work on their tone and presentation. Having said that I feel they shouldn't need to ask for donation because they are basically providing the top search results for most of the search engines and Digital voice assistants like Alexa and should be able to have a stream of income from the big corps with out effecting their integrity.

Really like the article. How do you approach a reverse situation. Where you are working with a small team and there are lot of moving pieces. I work for a small org which builds and maintains their own in-house software. It's not a single product, more of a duct tape of tools. Given a team size of 10 people and ~50 projects, like a bunch of cli tools, web applications, desktop applications, written by many people and passed down legacy stuff, how would one organise the team and drive the development effort.

Waking up at the same time everyday!

Sounds counter intuitive but forcing myself to wake up at the same time irrespective of the quality of sleep has forced my body to adapt. If some reason I couldn't get a good sleep, I still force myself to get up at the scheduled time. This makes me drowsy on the day but I will be tired enough to get a deep sleep next day. If I let myself take few more hours of nap by snoozing because I didn't got enough sleep that spirals down.

I have been in a lot of stress lately because of the workplace dynamics. Initially I couldn’t even know if it’s actually work related or if I am going through some kind of health issues. After thorough investigation I kind of realized its mostly the work pressure which is acting on my nerves and causing me to trip. Here is the rough approach I followed to start debugging myself.

Physical: 3 major components...

Sleep: Are you getting the right quantity and quality of sleep.

Exercises: Are you getting enough physical activity? Make sure your routine involves some sort of sport which you are excited about and one which takes you out in nature and sunlight.

Nutrition: Monitor what you are putting in your body and more importantly when. Cook food, real food. Make sure you are taking the necessary supplements like Vitamin D( most are deficient).

Mental:

Meditation: I am still trying to get the hang of it. Hearing a lot of great things and trying to spend at least half an hour in a sit.

Journaling: Game changer for me. https://neilkakkar.com/the-human-log.html

Learning: Last but not the least reading, listening or watching to new and interesting ideas and people.

Spiritual:

This is personal and you need to sit with yourself and analyse what's working and what’s not. Take some time off and listen to yourself. This is always the most tricky one.

Hope this rambling is of some value! Cheers!

After burning myself by overworking for almost a decade with out break, I recently got a 3 months break. Got laid off, thanks to COVID and it showed me the value of leisure. I was so stressed out I didn't felt like working at all. I am the kind of person who used to spend the weekends on the latest js framework or some new language features. I simply dropped everything for almost the whole time. Read a lot of non-fiction. Did lot of physical activity like swimming and running. Spend most of the time listening to podcasts while learning to bake.

This gave me a new perspective on the leisure time, which I didn't had before. Now that I am slowly getting back to work I want to make leisure an active part of my routine. It is going to be tricky but at least I will try to continue my swims & runs.

I recently had an interview where I was supposed to record the screen while I am solving the problem and share it with the interviewer. I couldn't do it. I am one of those people who's mind goes blank when someone is standing behind me and watching over the shoulders. The thought of recording my screen induced the same feelings.

well this is one amazing article. The author just earned my mad respect. Just bumped up his book on my read list. I find it interesting to find out how the entire system is shaping up.
