It seems logical that they would want your data, but: 50gb is pretty much free for them (storage gets cheaper over time, for one) and maybe a good selling point, no sd card makes file system easier and phones thinner, and in addition to wanting all your data, they would want to have android users have the nice automatic expedience of having all their music in one place on all devices, for example. Want your users to have great simple experience. You want this for business reasons, and I am not saying they are not also data hungry.

World on a Wire is an adaptation of the same book directed by Rainer Werner Fassbinder (the greatest director of all time), and is definitely worth checking out.

Said this before, but Denno Coil is a recent post-cyberpunk sci-fi animated series from japan that explored AR tech in interesting new ways. It is not the "hardest" of sci-fi, and it is about kids, but it is touching, does not pull punches, and I like the art direction. I would suggest checking it out for anyone who wants some fresh sci-fi.

Same director as some of the Ghost in the Shell stuff (stand alone complex stuff) I believe. Also, everyone should check out Denno Coil. It is a super great post-cyberpunk drama that revolves around this cyberpunk ghost story. The main tech is the story is AR stuff, it is creatively drawn, and it brings new sci-fi stuff to the table as opposed to just more terminators and teleporters.

I have (and I just did again). Maybe I should give it more time to warm up to it? If I can't get a slashed zero deja vu sans mono, I will just have to buy a hi-res screen so the zero dot is less ugly (should do anyway).

Why not something like medium.com? Well, it does look pretty nice (though, not as nice as mine), and it would save having to pick a domain name and such. Interesting note, same founder as blogger. While their beta/editor and area specific comments features are pretty cool (it seems easy to communicate to author), I am not too big on the social element, I do not prefer the lack of control (an example of this being how your writing will be linked to by or link to random other articles or not being able to link my soundcloud on my landing page), I don't think there is rss/email support, and it is also that it is rather new, and while I am not too proud to follow trends and I doubt it will die anytime soon (it is not like blogger is the most secure option), it will probably change and new features will roll out. What if there is ever ads that you can't control, or they add publicly available revision history, or you can't turn off public comments? So, while pretty cool, overall I still like blogger and my control over the html/css. We will see where it goes.

I doubt this analogy is perfect. Location/upkeep/convenience are different in the software world, and one of the big problems with Walmart is that they underpay their workers. And whereas mass produced X and artisan X might be different, I don't see any advantage of artisan desktop sharing.

Maybe there is something to soaking up a market (RSS) then dropping it (though it seems the ball is being somewhat picked up there), But, maybe unlike walmart?, there is little reason to believe that was malicious. People (Kevin Rose, for example) were making fun of RSS being super dead in 2011. I am no expert, but I doubt it is a google plus play as much as a twitter defeat. Note: I personally love RSS, but if I was not a tech news junkie, it might be of little use to me.

I kinda like the melodrama as much as or more than the story (the us/nsa being evil is no surprise), because this is one of the most cyberpunk things to happen in the last few years (TPB and stuxnet being others). I mean, their last name is Snowden! I could not think of a better one if I tried.

Sure, but the point is Assange should be a side dish to the Wikileak related issues (like civilian casualties, privacy, transparency), and Assange's personality a side dish to their actions and writings/ideas (which I find interesting/fun).

40 years ago is not that long, some of the same people might even be employed! Also, what if Malcolm X had been an issue 20 years ago? Also, this is one we know about, what about the ones we don't know about? Also, half the equation is the surveillance in this PRISM thing. To enough of a point to be concerned: The other half can be extrapolated from actions during the war on drugs/terror, whistleblowers, iran contra, northwoods, vietnam, grenada, bay of pigs, chile, and generally messy law making. Some of these are dated, but that's partially due to one: my info being out of date/depth, some things not being released or uncovered yet. There is no real assurance that any of these behaviors have stopped. The burden of proof is on them. This news is not reassuring. There is a difference between secrecy and lying.

Disclaimer: I don't actually mind as much as I should. I somewhat OK with a cyberpunk dystopia because the closer to Ghost in the Shell we get, the cooler.

Most my examples would be of the US acting in cases that are technically illegal and only so related directly to this kind of surveillance (like ELF, bradley manning, mccarthyism (not to mention other, foreign policy related or historical atrocities)), I certainly do not think that, even if we pretend the US always has super great intentions, they are not always the best to have stick their hands in things.

Used to have 2 (old one, and pop out), now it has 2 (new one and pop out). (there is also the look for reply, and for chatting (which i use even if other is offline sometimes instead of a quick email), and the ability to revert to the old look)

By this logic, the old one is at least as fascist. Additionally, while you might not like the new style, "real" feature was removed, but the ability to write multiple emails at once, or write one while one is open, were added.

Edit: I just tried to old one to see it again. It is rather bulky. It needed a UI update of some kind at least. (which may have been accomplished not semi-popped out, i guess)

I think some people might think that there is too much clutter in the "background" with that list of emails and all. But, this is not so much a problem if you have a cleared CSS-edited pretty unread/important/read gmail like mine.

You would hardly know how the typical consumer is going to use/like it from that data though (not that I do not agree that that might be a good idea, maybe they just want to get it out soon).

I like it too. I can write multiple emails at once, and a chat box will never be in the way of the composer. Maybe there should be a "snap back into page" button thing, but people seem to forget that there is a pop out button if you want a more mono-tasking email style.

Additionally, with this interface, it could be more integrated with hangouts and cross google's services (maybe easier send email pop up on andriod tablets?).

It is odd, but I recently noticed that my 2 most tech savy friends (use linux, take CS classes, read PG, etc) both have dumb phones. For one of them, it's a bit of an cost thing, but my friends explanation was: Since I am on my first/real device almost all the time, I don't need a second device as much.

Ghost in the Shell is the greatest thing ever. The same director that did the series did Eden of the East which is fun and near term sci-fi. But, also, Dennu Coil might be a series worth checking out. Nowhere near as epic as GitS, but it explores near term AR tech in a thematically interesting way (as well as being a neat case study in movie/show making (due to the whole AR thing)).

Disclaimer: I have not yet finished the series, it is animated, it does not seem to have the type of accuracy that GitS has (but still interesting!), it stars kids, and is somewhat family friendly.

I believe over that limit goes towards your 15gb limit (unless you pay for a plan).

Side note, if you are grand-parented into a google storage plan (which is great, $20 a year for 80gbs), the recent gmail/other storage merge does not apply to you, I believe.
