Any of the three major branches are the first choice for lean, bespoke network appliances. For Mullvad in particular OpenBSD or FreeBSD would be the obvious choice.
Not sure the actual authors of the various overlapping Linux network subsystems even know the comprehensive picture "inside and out" for chronic lack of consistent documentation.
Last time I managed a small «supercomputer», 50x IBM blades running Suse, it wouldn't support PXE/NFS without kernel customization, but that would void support contracts and finicky third-party software. Made a switch to FreeBSD, where everything worked out of the box one hour later. That was over 15 years ago, I have no idea how much the situation changed.
Not to provoke predictable responses, but I find it interesting that the tech-talented VPN providers are not using BSD in favor of Linux, especially with requirements like diskless operation, kernel customization, and tighter security.

The OpenBSD OS is roughly as relevant today as it ever were. The OpenBSD project has significantly grown in relevance since inception through OpenSSH, LibreSSL and dozens of other high-quality implementations.
Layman thoughts:
(1) with enough high-quality training data, «AI» models should be able to output H265 / H266 / AV1 directly, can achieve simplicity and reduce artifacts by skipping an inferior compression step and leveraging temporal elements
(2) if AI video compression (as demoed by nvidia) becomes standard, the training data and generated data will become [more] «AI-native», boosting these efforts by miles

A quick search says it's actually ticks, which is OS and machine dependent (kernel tunable). Nanosecond resolution is not enough for a seed if it's a real datetime, so the 32-bit truncation is a separate problem.
Complexity management is key in any project. Lots of successful forks reduce total complexity. NetBSD and OpenBSD are excellent examples — one could argue that their goals and innovations (in portability and security) would also be useful in the «mainline» FreeBSD, but that would explode complexity.
The FreeBSD community is carefully watching progress across many forks and cherry-picking / importing a lot of the cream.

You can remote-reset everything but if the network breaks, you have to physically get there. (OOB/LOM notwithstanding)

Yep, I have happy exceptions like that as well. Average has been getting worse though. Lots of travel in hot humid climates might be contributing, but unintuitively that's where the majority of apple product usage happens.
