Broadly I don't think it's hard to imagine a software update being safety critical if the software is used in a safety critical system.

What's been driving me batshit is when nixos-rebuild decides it wants to build from source. I just burned an hour the other day trying to update, and getting stuck because Nix decided my little old laptop needed to compile node.js from source. Had to trial-and-error remove packages to figure out which one was transitively pulling in node.js.

It turned out to be ansible... which is a pure python tool. Beats me.

There's also some cases where it wants to build Android Studio from source. I've just removed it and now run it in a VM.

I'm sure I'm doing it wrong, and I'm sure nixos-rebuild has a reason to build things from source, and maybe I'm not RTFMing hard enough. But good god, I just need my system to update.

You can find pretty much anything there, the only thing I struggled with is I like the outdoors and there isn't good hiking (but Chicago actually has really good birdwatching in the city).

Lincoln Park north is not what I would call "good hiking", but I think it's nice for those who like the outdoors. Good for daytime walks, large beaches, dog beach, bird sanctuary, some small natural areas, lakefront trail (paved).

For good hiking, yes you'll have to drive out of the city.

It has the drawback of breaking the GPS and compass. Also I imagine any recalls that are fixed via over-the-air updates won't apply. Hopefully that never happens, because I don't want to have to try to explain to the dealer that I need them to apply the update locally.

I don't think this is a rational feeling, but I can relate.

I've successfully trained my dog to be non-reactive towards squirrels/birds/etc. on walks. The other day she walked by a rabbit from within a few feet, and hardly gave it even a look. And I felt bad, as though I've suppressed her natural self and ability to be excited about such a thing. She's now pacified to live in my world.

An irrational feeling, because she's now at much less risk of being run over by a vehicle, but it was a feeling nonetheless.

FWIW I've never received feedback directly from a rejection email. I've always had to reply back and ask.

Their interview practices (at least the first round and two years ago) are quite fair. A couple of take-home programming exercises that are respectful of your time. And they'll grant feedback if you ask, if you don't pass.

To me, unless there is an exchange of money and a signed statement of work, I have absolutely zero entitlement as a user. And the maintainers are well within their rights (by law and social contract) to tell me to go away. I wish this was a more adopted mindset.

It’s why things like CentOS being abandoned, terraform licensing, et. al. never bothered me. I’m not paying them, so :shrug:.
