And this article doesn't qualify for "Show HN". As far as I've observed, Show HN applies for stuff OP has built or a service/tool you've discovered.

How does realtime actually work? Can you shed light on that, please?

This is a dire contrast to most Asian parents I've encountered, who seem to think that medical and engineering are the only fields that are respectable. Everything else is a waste of time.

The issue here is that my product is definitely better designed, and can match (perhaps even slightly bypass) the technical capabilities of the rival product!

But It'd be safe to say the following — The "rival" has established a (4-5k people) community around the product, and my better designed version aims to build a larger community of users. I'm not going to be charging, and neither is he.

I got "invited" to svbtle a year and a half ago, and I have ever since used and quit it. I hated (and still do) the fact that somebody else had absolute control over what my blog looked like, and what changes I made.

Nothing so intriguing about it, really.

Why do we treat "hackers" as some sort of mythical beasts who belong to a whole different race altogether? Now, I'm not saying you're doing that, but this is something I've observed quite a lot. Especially with those "X for Hackers" etc..

Answering your question — it differs from person to person. I personally wouldn't be interested in receiving a new router, for example, but I do know people who would. I'd like a typewriter more, to be honest. But that's just me.

Lastly, a good gift is one that comes with sincerity. It doesn't matter what it is, as long as its sender sends along warm wishes and sincere affection.

I use the power button to lock the phone (turn off the backlight), to mute incoming calls when the phone is in my pocket, and to take screenshots. It would suck for me (and a vast majority, I think, of people who do the same) to have to take off the case with a "special" screwdriver.

A better option would be to prompt the user to enter their passcode before turning the phone off, if at all the user has set a passcode.
