I also strongly like NAT. In roughly descending order:
1) It fails safe. Virtually all device misconfigurations result in failure to pass traffic, rather than being passed accidentally.
2) You get full control of your external signature (at that protocol level). When Comcast and AT&T realize that they can charge for more than a single /128 on their consumer networks we'll see a lot of wailing and gnashing of teeth on /r/technology, and it will be completely inane to those of us that saw the same companies attempt the same BS with NAT detection in the late 90s.
3) I would like to be able to implement dual stack in networks that I'm responsible for with as much similarity as possible. Having to reason independently more than needed about how IPv4 and IPv6 behave is needless difficulty.
4) IPv6 allocations today are asininely large. We're going to have 30-45 years of overallocation and then be out again, and in the interim we'll have a whole host of new braindead protocols in the manner of FTP and VOIP. The collective lessons we've learned about NAT will have (for all intents and purposes) been lost and we'll get a bunch of new shoddy hacks for dealing with them (passive FTP and NAT-T).
5) If it's a useful tool, by the user's estimation, why can't I have it? The internet grew up on what amounted to "be a good peer and we can all get along", but on this specific topic it quickly dissolves into STOP LIKING THINGS I DONT LIKE, YOU CAN'T HAVE IT, I'M TELLING THE IETF.
This was it for me. I don't really care about the stupid "hit the monkey and win" blinking animated .gifs, and lived with them for years without really worrying, but in 2015 ad blockers aren't sunglasses, they're condoms.
Furthermore, I installed uBlock in Firefox for Android because ads were getting so bad that it was essentially impossible to view some sites. It was a last-ditch effort to offer the content one last chance to survive. If publishers would prefer I not see their content at all, that's fine... I was almost already there, anyway.
In response to jedberg's question: I personally don't mind but I don't believe I'm as petulant and entitled as the typical loud mouthed redditor, but reddit made that bed, and now they get to lay in it.
It strikes me as the company equivalent of a fart app.
If money is easy enough to come by that investors can drop $100k like you and I can drop $0.99, sell them what they're buying.

I'd argue that as long as an intermediate is passing out BS certs, nobody (modulo cert pinning etc) who trusts that intermediate or its root is truly protected.
Laughably bogus (almost entirely unreadable) on a former flagship Android phone that is just barely out of contract, too.
I saw that as well... 2 and 6 gb. I understood the infographic to mean a base amount of tethering data was free per month, which sure isn't how it looks on Sprint's site.
Does anyone have info on the Sprint tethering pricing listed here? I don't see it on their site or a Google search, and the existence of such would be very compelling for me (obnoxious overage price notwithstanding).

Don't sweat it too much. You can do things to adjust your odds, but there's a lot of luck involved, so part of it is out of your control. Who's hiring, what they're looking for, how your resume matches what they want, and how you interview that day can all turn good candidates and good employers into non-matches.
Mind your ethics and personal preferences, but don't over-emphasize the fun part of a fun job. Your attitude can control your opinions to some extent, and this plays in your favor here. Employers generally trip over themselves to try to convince candidates that they're a fun and exciting place to work. They're not trying as hard to pour money on you (generally). Geeks are generally bad at negotiating, and bad early steps can have a long-term, sometimes nearly permanent, effect on your salary level. It's also common to feel bitter if you ever realize you're being screwed over financially.
Don't sweat recruiters too much. As a candidate your interests don't directly align with theirs. That doesn't mean that you're necessarily always at odds. If you care about a fun work environment you will probably find that they don't have much to offer you. It doesn't hurt to talk to them, but don't expect much.
Probably the single biggest attack point for hitting your stated goals is during the job interview. Make sure that you realize the interview is, and treat it as, a mutual process. Are your future teammates boring, stupid, or difficult? What's the manager looking for, explicitly and implicitly? Why did the last person on the team leave (even/especially if the team is growing)? How does the hiring manager (or the higher-up "fit" interviewer, usually a Director or executive) think about the company culture, and what do they do about it?
You will probably not benefit by bringing up salary or benefits before the interviewer does, so don't. Once that topic has been broached don't be afraid to dig. If you're feeling brash, ask how the company makes salary decisions. There are services out there that offer salary ranges for employee positions. Maybe they use that data. If so, how?
Eventually you'll get an offer. Congratulations! It's very common for employers to set a tight expiration on one. If your offer expires sooner than you're comfortable making a decision, push back gently but firmly. Commit to a response deadline, but give yourself the time you need to decide.
I'm not particularly interested in this for my phone. I'm not sure why -- I think I'm still more comfortable with the idea of having an "unlimited" resource for talking.
This, however, would be a stellar model for iPad use. If I had a tier-2 tablet offering, I'd be tripping all over myself to get it in front of these guys, especially with the Sprint network underneath it having credible 4G in big cities.

I don't feel like they faked it at all. The entire world is ganging up against Top Gear on this topic but here is a list of conditions that need to be met in order to get the maximum range:
The batteries must be new. The car must be fully charged. The car must be driven between normal and gently. The weather must not be excessively cold. To the extent the batteries aren't new, they should not be rapid-charged.
So fast forward half way through your car loan, the car's 2.5 years old, it's had a 70/30 mix of normal/rapid charges, the driver has a heavy-ish foot, and you've got to leave work at noon to pick your sick kid up from school. Oops. Sure, it's a contrived example, but it's really a concern and really truly is a reason that a car like this doesn't make sense today.
All that aside, I agree with you. Their review of the Leaf was glowing. Good for Nissan to play hardball -- they're just multiplying the publicity value of their review. They'll come out looking even better because of it.

My opinion differs on soldering irons. I find that cheap electric soldering pens tend to give me poor results. For someone starting out I think this could be discouraging. Radio shack has a cheap butane pen that works much better for me. It does cost slightly more, but I find it is usable on a wider range of projects and can even heat shrink tube in a pinch.
I believe CAN-SPAM has provisions against that, but several vendors have standardized on storing the suppression files as a list of md5s. Of course that is not bulletproof (the source space is small, especially among the big mail providers) but at the moment it seems to have shifted the economics favorably.
I'm pretty sure the Apple II series all emitted NTSC analog video out, and the two common monitors pre- //c (Monitor // and Monitor ///) were green only.
As a child I remember piping the video out through our vcr to the tv and being quite disappointed by the fringe-tastic picture quality. Ahh, the bad old days. :)

Not many years ago people got paid to, among other things, pick out the appropriate operating system for any given application. Clearly there's not much of a future in that.
These days that same person is responsible for vetting cloud hosting providers, email service providers, and has to be capable of comparing the "old" in-house solutions and bring things inward if there's benefit.
The technology changes, but the role more or less stays the same. The system admin is generally a bridge between business operations and the technology stack, and there's always going to be glue there, particularly for businesses of at least 10 people.
Disclosure: System Admin / Engineer by trade. Weigh my opinions appropriately.
Two circuits per rack, with half of circuit per customer would be a lot better. The price would have to go up, but 3a in 10u isn't enough better than individual machine colo to be worth the price.
I have friends that are putting something similar together and might be very interested in this as a starting point.
The promises of additional revenue always seem ignorant of the basic reality that users are only willing to pay so much per month for mobile service.
If you assume that is true, the result is that people end up paying the same amount for less service. Getting into the business of selling less service for the same money seems suicidal in an established commodity market.
It is too bad the cable tv model hasn't played out to its conclusion yet. It is pretty obvious that it would serve as another corpse on this trail as a warning.
The Telecom / wireless industry is absolutely littered with expensive, legacy, high margin solutions to previous problems. Key among them are military / 911 grade service level equipment. Frankly, people don't have the same expectations of IP applications, and those apps don't rely on service at the same level.
I contend that the road to profitability is through reduced cost, not increased revenue or reduced service.
It doesn't seem like a dichotomy to me. There are two types of food -- meat and vegetables, yet I can have steak and beans on the same plate. Moreover, I may eat one or the other alone depending on my disposition at any given time.
I am currently in the process of negotiating an employee agreement that limits IP claims to stuff reasonably related to the official line of business, rather than the more normal "everything you think about until you leave belongs to us".

I find the notion of this sort of personal development interesting for people (like myself) that would be interested in starting their own company but aren't at that point right now. To me, the notion of running your department like a small business lends some life to the tired notion of "internal customers".
Something that has thrown me off here: The position very clearly reads as a senior System Administrator / Engineer, with some project management and lead experience. But the title is Director of Infrastructure. Speaking from my experience, a director is a manager of managers.
Is this req really a director role? If so, where are the criteria for the leadership and managerial components? The listing goes into quite a lot of detail about the technical side on things that would end up being optional when deep-diving with the right candidate.
If not, and it's actually a "director of the machines that compose the infrastructure", IMO the education bar is too high: I've never worked at Google, but I don't know anyone with a masters degree that gets Nagios alerts.
Lastly, as an outsider, I see "Customer up-time and data integrity is the most important thing in our company and we need someone who has the experience, depth and skills to lead this area of our company.", but the listing does not speak to the candidate's responsibilities with regard to the development / architecture of the software itself. A senior technical contributor or a manager with this charter will spend no small part of their time in design and code reviews. Frankly, in a lot of shops this position has to argue with Dev to keep them from doing things that seem clever but can't be operationalized, whether due to an unforseen technical restriction, or because the new idea will have a lot of corner / edge cases that will make administration of the application very error-prone.
Had I not moved across the country in the last year, I'd definitely consider throwing my hat in the ring... UT is on the short list of places I'd move next round, too. Good luck and please post a follow-up!
TRIM's primary value is preservation of performance as the disk fills. If your environment doesn't support it yet, you can stop-gap it by leaving a few percent of your disk space unallocated, giving the internal block allocators breathing room.
It's not perfect, but it is easy to configure and can make some difference without the reformatting hassle.
Where I work we presently have between 5-10 TB (actual, not raw, not counting replicants) across several MySQL shards. $/iop they just slay magnetic solutions.
The most interesting insight I can offer is that because there is no seek time penalty and SSD throughput increases as the I/O scatters, our tests with RAID 5 are essentially as fast as RAID 10, which makes $/gb much better than it looks at first blush.
TRIM through hardware RAID is still an unsolved problem for us, as is getting wear life SMART data (Intel X25M G2) through the RAID controller. My gut feeling is that the final solution is probably a JBOD controller and Linux software RAID.
It's clear that a benefit was seen. Moreover, it's clear that in other cases (shopping at Amazon, searching at Google), more responsive servers mean an increase in traffic, since people are free to shop / browse more, and it keeps people's interest.
In the case of a single site with a single product / purpose (ignoring Mozilla's other products), is there a generally agreed on explanation for what is going on here? Do people really change their mind about something as big as changing their web browser because of a delay of one-two seconds? Are these people marginal users and unlikely to actually finish installing it, or likely to abandon the browser after a single use?
I'd like a peek into the psychology of the marginal people in a scenario like this.
Solaris has gone back and forth between fully commercial, to free + free updates, to commercial, to free without updates, to now commercial again.
In my experience using solaris at the bottom-end has been kind of a non-starter for a decade now because Sun yo-yoed the licensing enough to remind people they shouldn't use it.
Honestly, good riddance. Oracle can go figure out what they're trying to do and this will motivate the open source OS hacker community to get the relevant features of Solaris implemented (or surpassed) in other OSes.

That looks like it was a sample line that wasn't particularly useful, but if you do:
cat file.txt | sort | uniq | wc -l ## notice uniq
it gives you the count of unique lines. If you omit the sort in that instance it will fold duplicates together a/b/a is three lines, not two.
I just tested a meta refresh inside a noscript tag. It works (in FF, at least). I'm sure it would make some validator angry, but it would make automatic redirection easy for the js-disabled case.
