Two things: First, they haven't published the actual rules yet, so no one really knows what devil is in the details. (My guess is the rules are published on Christmas Eve...which tells you something about how they think they'll go over.)

Second, the rules will be challenged in court and it's entirely possible they will be overturned. This is because the FCC somewhat inexplicably backed down on an earlier promise to reclassify the Internet as a telecommunications service. As such, their legal authority for regulating it is a bit shaky.

Perhaps the other half is living with their parents.

Google's Report Spam button is actually pretty close to that. If the message has a List-Unsubscribe header, it offers to use that after hitting the Spam button.

And usually they don't really take 10 days, but that's the limit the law permits so they give themselves as much wiggle room as possible.

For what it's worth, it is actually illegal for US-based companies to require a login or any other nonsense to unsubscribe. CAN-SPAM (for all its many faults) is actually pretty specific about making unsubscribing from a newsletter very easy.

Well, now we're arguing semantics, but no... an SSI instruction is not part of HTML. It's a server-side scripting language. I could set up my server to interpret PHP embedded in .html files as well, but then they're not really HTML files any more.

That seems like a good idea, until you plonk your US Airways newsletter and realize that you've plonked future flight confirmations as well.

Blacklists weren't exactly a great solution to start with.

Sorry for the expired link. I don't appear able to edit it, but it's Section 760 of HR4853 (aka the big tax compromise bill that's been in the news). It was signed into law today.
