I was working full time and did my PhD at the same time. My employer let me do the work at work (there was a lot of overlap) and only had to travel to university to take a few classes (made up the time by working longer hours and sometimes on weekends) and meet with my academic advisor. I also had an advisor (mentor) at work that I would interact with on a daily basis. The downside was that I had to pay tuition, but the company paid for some and the rest I paid from my salary. I still made more than a graduate student at the institution. Overall, it was a great experience. I would recommend doing it this way if you are interested in going into industry and you already have a built-in job. I was upfront when I got hired and told them I was looking to do a PhD and they agreed.

A few jobs back when I was working for a fairly large telecom company there was a similar kind of thing for the software department. I was in hardware but sometimes I would interview software people if they were hired to participate on my project. The software department asked me to rank the interviewee on various categories and give a score. If the total score from all interviewers were larger than some value, they wouldn't hire them because they didn't want them to get bored and leave. Needless to say, this process frustrated many people. It was not consistent across the company though. For the hardware department there was no such system.

Not sure about that. If Matlab is their main competition, then they are much cheaper and you get tons more (that you may never use but its there...) for the price of just Matlab's base software. The downside is that the engineering community by and large uses Matlab because it's what the legacy code is and it is taught in school. I've used Mathematica and I enjoy using it (and Python) more than Matlab but at the end I have to use Matlab because that's what my colleagues use.

Only 150 people with 35 intubated. There are several factors that could explain (at least part of) their results and one is age. They do mention that age denotes a statistically significant difference between intubation and no intubation under Table 1.

It is not easy to tell but depends on how you read this it could be that they had some data and they went fishing. You can always find correlations by fishing through the data and looking for when does the p-value become low enough [0] but its not a valid way to do data analysis. It is also data from one hospital and one region. I don't think you can draw too many conclusion from this one study.

It is published in a journal with impact factor of 6.36 and a metabolic journal. If this was a significant finding I would think they would publish in a higher impact factor journal.

This is far from self contained. I know that in the past people seeded clouds [0] to get rain but this is a lot of extra work that's needed. At that point it may be still easier to use the high power laser and guide the discharge. Saying this technology can help reduce wild fires is a bit premature but I wish them all the best of luck.

Similar issue with Aeroflot. They cancelled my flight and issued a refund but said it would take weeks. After 4 weeks called my credit card company and they issued a credit to my account immediately. The credit card company said that I could have called after a week, didn’t have to wait 4.

Agreed about the student pilot not getting an endorsement on an on-going basis. It's too much of a risk to them.

As a student pilot in the US you can fly without a passenger but also with other restrictions like your flight instructor has to give you an endorsement to fly and most won't give you an unrestricted endorsement. It is really there to get you a certificate and not as a way to bypass it. I am an instrument rated private pilot. What your dad told you is true but is also mostly preventable. Sometimes there are accidents that you don't know ahead of time will happen: I've had a friend who died on a local flight trying to challenge himself with strong winds in a mountainous airport, had a heart attack and died. However, that kind of accidents, equipment failure accidents are in the minority. Most accidents are pilot error. That's been studied a lot in general aviation. The conclusion is that most general aviation accidents are preventable. Pilot going into situations that a little planning and thought could prevent. [0]

As a private pilot it is mostly your choice what situation you put yourself through. To survive being a pilot you need a certain amount of humility and understanding your limitations. Also a lot of planning, including contingency plans on what to do if you get stuck somewhere or if the weather gets bad. You are not an airline, you do not have the equipment and resources they do and you should plan accordingly. This should be part of your training and it is up to you to maintain this as you fly.

If you are interested, a good book on the subject of general aviation accidents and as it relates to private pilots is The Killing Zone, Second Edition: How & Why Pilots Die by Paul Craig. Very readable book.

Additionally, aviation accidents are studied by many people in the industry and there are checklists to follow before and during the flight (IM SAFE [1], PAVE[2]. etc...) that should help you to determine if you even should make the flight. There are also automated tools that calculate based on your experience and the environmental conditions if its a go/no go [3] and if you stick to these things they would make you a very safe pilot. So I wouldn't let a fear of getting into an accident stop you from being a pilot but be smart and follow the rules, set yourself some conservative personal minimums, follow the checklists, and plan, plan, plan and you should be safe.

Not quite. The paper cited above [0] Figure 2 pg 17 shows conductivity as a function of temperature. A superconductor has a flat part of the conductivity at low temperature here they have not reached it. There is no transition [1]. The do say on page 8 of [0]: "Extending this approach to stabilize the dispersionless states similarly expected from the kagome network adds an exciting prospect for increasing correlations and enabling the study of magnetically driven fractionalization of states" So it may be a possibility in the future.

OK. So let's say it is the placebo effect. You can pay $50 for a massage that will manage your pain or better yet get rid of it or you can pay 100's of dollars and your insurance 1000's to be relieved of the pain with pain killers and medicine you don't need. For my money I'll choose the $50 and if it doesn't work then I'll consider other treatment options. Its seems hospitals are starting to wise up to this too. Here is Rutgers University Hospital Pain Management Center for example: "We also refer patients for alternative techniques such as acupuncture, chiropractic care, bio-feedback, and self-hypnosis."

Its there [1] but if you read you can see that there are options that are really confusing the consumers and seem to be designed to obscure the truth. Using a QR code is a hassle to consumer trying to buy groceries. I want to see the pertinent information on the label. At the end of the day if you buy organic than you know its GMO free plus other benefits (if that's important to you). But that put some non-GMO sellers at a disadvantage because they don't want to go through the extra cost of obtaining an organic certificate.

For the people here who say that the drones can't take down an airliner or a small Cessna how many lives are you willing to bet on it? The live of two people typical of a Cessna 172, the lives of a few hundred passengers in a Boeing 777? What we are forgetting is the human factors here too. It is not just a collision that might damage an engine, a wing, or a tail section. It is also the distraction the pilot now has to deal with very close to the ground. Now instead of paying attention to the landing and other aircraft the pilot has to figure out what was that noise that just collided with it. Especially under instrument meteorological conditions. In fact, FAA has regulations for airlines to have a sterile cockpit (100% concentration on the landing and no outside distractions) due to accidents that have happened and loss of life while pilots were distracted with other things even higher than the 400 ft.
