I own one 8XX model (~3 years old, I think) and can attest that "Roomba proofing" the spaces prior to operation and having furniture with high clearings and basic shape legs are kind of needed to prevent it getting stuck.

It's not really necessary because as you say, there are other ways.

But it's useful if what you want to do is create a simple API to access your data. If your use case includes buildinga CRUD app, or API, you basically get that out of the box.

If you have several components/clients (in different languages) which need to access your database it allows you keep a common interface instead of having to work with different specific libraries/frameworks for each language.

Yes, we found the same issue. We worked around this by organizing our application (an admittedly basic REST API) in two layers. The external one exposed to API consumers, developed in a language/framework you may like (Python/Tornado for us), and the internal data access layer which uses Postgrest, and is only accessed locally from within the REST API application servers

Well, there's plenty of legacy code laying around that may be easier to improve and fix than completely rewrite. In fact, I just presented this tool to my co-workers as a suggestion to clean over 150KLOC of shell scripts we have laying around.

If the whole database is 2GB, can you get a server big enough to have all your data in memory, or at least the hot part of your data? That would be better.

I would suggest that anybody interested in performance test these claims in their own setup. I ran tests doing binary swapping binaries when the releases of both were around 5.5.34 and in my case MySQL CE had between 10%-15% better performance.

When I ran the tests for MariaDB 10.x and MySQL CE 5.6.x the advantage even went further for MySQL with around 20% better performance.

I find always funny how with every release you can get opposing claims from each camp regarding performance.

This. And also, is it truly a general purpose intelligence, or a special-purpose one which evolved into general by just extending the domain of application? I'd say that most of what is considered intelligence comes from pattern matching plus inference; and there is a number of 'illusions' and cognitive biases that trick the mind because one of these processes fails. This may for example by finding patterns where there is none, which is quite normal.
