These are great questions! I'll let Billy and Mike chime in, but it's meant to take advantage of WIG efficiencies (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ground-effect_vehicle) which lets the aircraft have a much longer range and a shorter certification pathway.
Check this out: http://regentcraft.com/video It actually flies, taking off after the hydrofoil kicks in.
Everything is going electric. Aircraft, cars, boats, trains, etc.
Love seeing somebody invent an entire new vehicle. REGENT is going far beyond just strapping batteries to an existing mode of transport.
I’ve had the opportunity to work with the founders from the very early days. If anybody can pull it off, it’s Billy and Mike.
It's amazing watching and industry (space launch vehicles) grow so rapidly, and then watching all of the surrounding companies emerge that support the workflow/operations. Epsilon3 seems to be a great example of this.
I wonder how many other SpaceX employees will start founding companies in a similar vein: building some of the toolsets to be used across companies.
Unrelated extra point: this is a cool video of the CEO talking to the SpaceX astronauts when they first reached space: https://youtu.be/z9uAN6YNkP0?t=5610
Yes— I was lucky to be in the W14 batch.
YC will get you access to great investors, help you get better terms, think through business decisions, offer a great network, etc, but to be honest many of those things can be had through other accelerators/incubators/investors/schools/programs.
What’s truly unique about YC is the mindset and environment you’re in during your time there. If you’re open to embracing the experience, it’s absolutely worth it. Having a tight-knit group of fellow founders to push and encourage you through a hyper intense 3 month period leads you to accomplishing some amazing things. Things that you may not have thought were possible or pulled off otherwise. Of course you get a crash course in entrepreneurship and a great network, but I’d argue you also learn a ton about yourself, about leading, about how to truly focus on the right problem, and what you’re capable of.
Absolutely worth it. Always happy to chat with people if they’re uncertain.
It’s critical to not underestimate the non-technical steps here, in terms of how do you deploy at scale, convince venues to install, deal with throughput rates, tie results to individuals, etc. All solvable, but it’s important to think about those sooner rather than later. I have some experience on the security side here and how to deploy technologies like this at scale... happy to help (my email is in bio).
I may be naive, but some of the responses to COVID 19 seem overblown. Swine flu caused over 10,000 US deaths and the response seemed nowhere as dramatic, especially with regards to the press. Is novel Coronavirus that much worse? Or is social media and the press driving it to new levels?
In theory, the price of the stock should account for the future free cash flows of the underlying company, so the growth should be priced in. Any future growth at the end of the day is speculation.
If one doesn’t want their data to be consumed/owned by Google, what’s the best alternative fitness band (not smart watch) on the market? I specifically do not want all of the smart watch features... just fitness/health tracking.
If you’re interested in tackling challenges like these, we do this at a much larger scale at Synapse Technology (gun/knife detection in X-ray images at airports, schools, courthouses, etc). Feel free to reach out.
You joke, but there are certain aspects that could be made far more efficient and accurate with AI.
Isn't their ad product already effectively charging for access to the user data? In a slightly more obfuscated way, sure, but broadly the same?
Have we hit peak crypto? I wonder if this would be more effective if it increased 10% each time instead of 2x. Interesting how nobody can run off with the money though... a fully traceable Ponzi scheme.
The articles keep referring to Waymo at "Waymo LLC". Almost every venture I've seen has been a corporation, not LLC... anything interesting as to why it's a LLC?
The film The Summit (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2363471/) does a great job showing the dangers of 8,000m of elevation. Fascinating to think about what drives people to climb these mountains with survival rates of 10% or lower.
To clarify, I meant they are comparing the resolution of the main screen to the touch bar.
But they are trying to make it look like they are comparing the two devices' screens. Definitely misleading.
I like that Microsoft is making an effort to capture the audience that wasn't impressed by Apple's MBP launch, but I can't get over their comparison chart.
They compare the main screen of the Surface to the lower screen (touch bar) of the MBP. That's just a shady comparison. At least be honest.
I'm a bit confused. The ports on the computers themselves can have different protocols- that makes sense. But the cables themselves can also support different protocols? Maybe I'm just naive, but can someone explain how a "dumb" cable supports different specs?
Precisely. I'm asking if other hard-tech incubators exist at Stanford (and others)...
Does anyone know if something similar exists at other universities (specifically curious about Stanford)?
Confused about what earphones come with the iPhone 7. The standard analog ones (since an adapter is included)? Feels very backwards... unless I'm missing something...
Also, no new MBP is very disappointing.
Always been curious about what occurs "behind the scenes" in situations like this. Strange how airlines (and the flight attendants!) aren't held more accountable. Would have assumed the FAA would want to look into any in-flight medical emergency.
I would assume it has to did with user acquisition costs or promotions in cities to re-engage existing users.
That's really cool-- congratulations.
I noticed ads on your site as well. How does ad revenue compare to recurring subscription revenue?
Helpful FYI: If you're interested in learning about Machine Learning (so you can use TensorFlow and Rescale, etc), I've found this to be an incredible resource: https://www.coursera.org/learn/machine-learning/
If you need to scrape, check out Kimono... https://www.kimonolabs.com/
I emailed them a task to test it out, no response so far. Curious how "involved" of a task they're willing to do.
It seems from their site speed is the top priority, which makes sense given the context of "I just need ___ built/working ASAP".
Thanks so much Stephen! We're so excited to have you on board.
Completely agree. This line sums it up best "If I could only pitch you one reason why Y Combinator is worth it, it would be the people.". I don't know any other place in the world where you can meet such a concentrated group of amazing, brilliant individuals (and companies!)
