Splatoon is mainly a competitive multiplayer shooter but the new Raiders game is a more traditional adventure game, I expect the sales for it will be insignificant as far as actually pushing new consoles.

A recent comment on a thread here I can't remember mentioned someone quitting to become a diesel mechanic 5 years ago, I think that finally pushed me to seriously considering entering the trades. I think I always wanted to eventually, but could never make the jump when tech felt like a 'natural' environment to be a part of, that's increasingly just no longer the case and I don't feel welcome.

Same boat, used to do backend infrastructure but have now been doing basic IT support at a non-tech industry; on paper I'm still employed, but between making not enough to make ends meet anymore and not even being fully engaged with the work, I feel effectively unemployed.

Yes there is expert craftsmanship in the industrial scale design of ikea products, and yes there is expert craftsmanship in a bespoke, handmade wooden desk, but AI results in neither of these. It's cheap and disposable and tuned for putting up the appearance of something high quality without any of the actual intent that would be put behind either of the other two examples.
I'm fully convinced now that this is the real reason for the OpenAI RAM wafer deals.

It's very true that AI has 'reversion to the mean' characteristics - kind of like everything in life ..
Genetic natural selection is the exact opposite mechanism of this... life is literally built around generating exception and experimenting.
The only reason you can even introspect or ponder this stuff at all is on the substrate of your human language. It's no sense to make this analogy with other forms on life on earth when there are plenty of your fellow humans who rolled much worse odds than you. The more disappointing part is how the humans who rolled good odds don't seem to want to do much about this.

Not sure why this is flagged? One of the largest social media platforms in the industry changed ownership, its user base is noticing an unexplained change in functionality? Surely that warrants a discussion among tech people?
This site is social media because I scroll it all day and get mad.
I was a heavy IRC user in 2015 before Discord and even though I personally prefer using IRC, it was obvious it would take over the communities I was for a few reasons:
1. People don't understand or want to setup a client that isn't just loading some page in their browser 2. People want to post images and see the images they posted without clicking through a link, in some communities images might be shared more than text. 3. People want a persistent chat history they can easily access from multiple devices/notifications etc 4. Voice chat, many IRC communities would run a tandem mumble server too.
All of these are solvable for a tech-savvy enough IRC user, but Discord gets you all of this out of the box with barely more than an email account.
There are probably more, but these are the biggest reasons why it felt like within a year I was idling in channels by myself. You might not want discord but the friction vs irc was so low that the network effect pretty much killed most of IRC.
If you were going to be buying it anyway why does it even matter what the price is? Why can't they just list it at the coupon price for everyone?
The only two of those you actually need to have a Plex-like setup are Jellyfin and Tailscale, both are trivial to setup and will run on basically any hardware you can imagine wanting to use for this.

I think there's something to be said for the form factor here though: I can see myself owning one of these just to take as part of a kit if I expect to need to do some troubleshooting away from my typical workspace.
Splatoon 1 doesn't have dedicated servers, the matchmaking is done on a server but the game itself runs peer-to-peer
Even beyond the wireless stuff it's focused on, it's super useful as a combined UART bridge, SPI Flash dumper, DAPLink debugger and other hardware tools.
When I was 16 I was definitely hosting services for people on a monthly VPS, but it wasn't until a few years later when my cloud provider imploded with 2 hours notice while I was in class and I lost all my files that I started to self-host with my own hardware over a VPN.
To be fair in the Animal Crossing game on the original DS that basically happened (People could drop glitched items spawned with an Action Replay that would effectively brick your game).

But quitting is really hard. I'd successfully exhaust my supply, but there's always bowl- and grinder-scrapings. After a night or two of smoking tar and dust, "fuck it", I'd find some more.
I've found my attempts to quit go better when I actually have a large supply of it that I'm consciously choosing not to indulge in. When your supply is exhausted your brain goes into a bit of a panic mode about it and you can't think rationally about how/why you're quitting.

Would this have implications about possible efficient methods of converting heat back into electricity? Or even just more ways of harnessing heat energy in general. I'm imagining heat pumps built with superconductors could be a critical part of mitigating climate change, but I'm far from a scientist and barely understand the physics here.
