i agree.

i believe that for most people on the street, for most tasks, a Chat GPT 3.5 era LLM is sufficient enough. sprinkle in tool calling and other things, and that becomes enough. if you can prioritize that level of a model on-device (baking it in etc), then you can bifurcate AI users between those unwilling to pay and those who are willing to pay A LOT for frontier model performance.

to clear up confusion, this 100k applies to brand new h1b petitions outside the country.

if you are already in the US it currently does not apply to you, or if you are transferring jobs with an existing h1b, or renewing your h1b.

source: former h1b

side note: as of february it’s estimated only 85 h1b petitions paid the 100k fee. the rest did not fall under the qualification.

isn’t what cook is pointing out actually the most important thing?

a product created for the strategic purpose of expanding into a new clientele is doing exactly that. that is the win.

put another way, if the statement he said was “best launch week ever for Mac customers.” that does not speak to the entire reason for the existence of this product category. in essence, THAT would be the pointless statement.

uh isn’t the data leaker the necessary accelerant and necessary component to validate against the rest of the ecosystem? isn’t that what triggered the communication and coordination between multiple delve customers?

come on now, let the poor girl have a new laptop to replace her (at least) 5 year old one. what are we doing here.

we saw this exact playbook with ios 7. i don't think you need to attribute malice or read into it much.

ios 7 relied heavily on blurring effects-- a flex at the time due to the efficient graphic pipeline vs android they had. this was coming off the heels of Samsung xerox'ing and they wanted a design that would be too expensive for competitors to emulate without expensive battery hit. liquid glass is following in this tradition.

and similarly to ios 7, the move to flat design was predicated on the introduction of new form factors and screen. flat design lent itself well to new incoming screen sizes and ratios. prior there was really one or two sizes and that was it, easy to target pixel perfect designs against. as apple moves to foldables and more, this design flexibility is once again required.

as for no one trying to emulate it, i'm not so sure, OriginOS 6 ripped it off back in October.

| How many Flutter developers exist in the world, today? My guess is that it's on the order of 1,000,000 developers. The real number is probably higher, but one million should be reasonably conservative.

one million flutter developers? that does not make sense to me at all (by orders of magnitude). does anyone know any metric to validate this? i am shocked if it's true.

from the outside looking in the time and space vercel have dedicated to their v0 product feels like a leadership team bored (or worse) with their main product offering.

it seems as if a company enthralled by AI fever at the very top of leadership, preferring hacking into some new dubious tangential product offerings than circling the wagons and fortifying their core proposition.

my personal belief is that driverless car hype was the by-product of the "gig economy"/uber success story. and in that march for IPO, uber had to address its largest problem re: scalability-- human drivers. this issue of scaling drivers was seen as the achilles heel of its technology play.

as a result they went deep into investing into the idea of driverless car technology, more for show than in reality. yes, hundreds of millions (billions overall) where dumped into this sector but it was really motivated by the incentive to keep a valuation high.

this "driverless" story picked up steam because it resonated with a lot of tech companies, similarly looking to move the needle in their valuations. for big giant tech companies this was alluring as there aren't that many single plays or markets you can do to move the company share price. so here came in google, head first, and apple still tentatively.

and then crucially, for established dinosaurs like Ford or GM, the opportunity to create tech valuations for themselves similarly appeared. so they jumped in.

all in all, we are still feeling the after effects of this uber story play out, with dwindling returns and ever reducing pile of money behind it.
