That doesn't line up though. See if you're 13 and meeting the level in 2012 your scores don't decline. So the levels would lag a few years. The 8 year-olds show up and miss the mark in 2017 that indicate the infinite scroll problem was having a toll on them. Additionally this would start to show in class specific measurements (those kids with access to home internet, personal devices, etc. would have worse scores). I think the argument about social media has merit in discussion of children, but it seems more of a social distinction rather than an objective indicator for academic performance.

I'll just suggest -- I don't think they have A/B tested the right amount of emails. There was a time when companies optimized this sort of stuff, but the cost of researching that vs. just sending every opportunistic email possible is too great. This doesn't really matter except that we give companies too much credit for stuff like this. They're just kind of...doing stuff, for better or worse.

I tend to agree. It's pretty easy to have cooking skills that out pace the trouble of driving, waiting, and ultimately only kind of enjoying fast food.

The advice I give people when rarely solicited, is that you work all day to ensure you have food and shelter. 1/3 work, 1/3 food, 1/3 shelter. If you routinely don't have time to cook and enjoy your food -- frankly, what are you doing with you life? Planning a menu, shopping for groceries, cooking meals, these things should take up your time! It's what you need to be doing. That's the point of this all!

I was self taught for 10 years in the field and found a program that offers a Master's degree with work experience accounting for the undergrad. I didn't take calculus or stats in my undergrad and that has caused some headaches in completing the degree, but the amount of stuff I was exposed to in such a short period of time was incredible.

Very quickly into the program I was stuck by just how unethical it was for me, with no experience and certification to make guarantees and promises to an employer who didn't know better. In most fields the knowledge worker could be held liable for making this kind of "contract" (think lawyers, electricians, doctors, etc.).

You can be driven and motivated. You might have learned a ton on your own. You cannot know what you don't know. People in these comments will trip over each other to explain that education is subjective and you won't use any of that stuff in the real world. They have stories about wasted classes and dusty academics. The reality is much more boring.

* Lectures are very effective ways of provide a curated bit of information.

* Structured practice and verification (homework and grades) are quick ways to ensure that the start of learning has occurred.

* Working with your peers will likely expose strengths and weaknesses in your existing understanding of the subject matter. This often helps everyone involved.

* Reading academic publications and textbooks helps to standardize the shared understanding of the subject and ensures that future efforts to expand the field or solve hard problems are more effective.

You said in your post that you're not sure where to go with your career and your opportunities aren't evident to you --- go to school and give yourself some deeper knowledge. It'll help you figure out how to navigate the field.

I agree with this. I have to learn a lot about a new tool before I can effectively use the docs (beyond the getting started). If it's area where I'm already familiar, then sometimes I can jump in pretty easily, but often fumbling is a key step.

I got a masters in cybersecurity recently and I have no intention in switching career paths from my system engineering focus to cybersecurity. I don't see why this can't just be a foundational study path for computer science beyond the 4 year degree. I didn't base this decision off anything more than just my personal interest. The program was a good fit for me.

With that said the points the author is making about recruiting and driving salaries down are endemic to other areas. In my undergrad, I had a law-related class and the professor took a class to talk through the issues with job placement in the legal system and encourage students fulfilling an undergrad before LSAT and future JD, etc. to consider things like public policy programs so they didn't end up with mountains of debt and a degree that was hard to actuate into a career.

I can't speak to LWN, but from what I've seen this is a bot that crawls the site, generates search terms and "deeper" crawling techniques using AI, and then makes another set of requests.

Again -- they don't say specifically what the traffic is doing, and this is just an example, but in this scenario DDOS is probably closer to accurate.

We have been suffering this. It's easy enough to weather high traffic loads for pages, but our issue is targeted applications. Things like website search bars are getting target with functional searches for sub pages and content by labels, etc. It causes the web server to run out of handles for the pending database lookups.

A real mess. The problem is these searches are valid and the page will return a 200 result with "Nothing in that search found!" types of messages. Why would the crawler ever stop? It's going to work and work until we all die and there's still another epoch of search term combos left to try.

We solve problems like this all the time, but we're hitting another level and really exposing some issues. Ideally our WAF can start to kick the traffic. It's good to see other people having this issue. We first started addressing this last fall -- around November.

I've been through both aspects. I really wouldn't listen to any of the people in this thread. Advice in this arena is so specific to domain and environment. If you don't remember function parameters for every builtin or stdlib of your language(s), you should look it up in the docs or use the LSP provided feedback. I have to reference my own libraries for docs sometimes. I just find myself in too many different codebases in a week to remember everything.

I learned more Bash and Python from running Shellcheck and Ruff respectively. Frankly, if your code has squiggles that get on your nerves from the LSP/linter fix the settings ... or better yet, correct the syntax. gasp

Hey, nice work. I think dedicating time and effort to documentation pays off in years to come.

Also -- from your original plug about your product I would have ignored it, but after reading through some of the docs, I actually see some use cases for this in a couple of upcoming projects!

I think Jaws of the Lion broke the rules down for Gloomhaven really well -- it introduced the complexities of the game slowly over scenarios. I would advise anyone who has a game that takes more than a couple of hours to play to have a way to start the game and then add complexity after initial barriers have been met.

Mechs vs. Minions is another one that does this iterative process of teaching.

This article looks great, I'll continue to read it.

I think people forget how new and dynamic these devices are. Maybe in a couple of decades we can have evergreen devices, but for now the changes of the devices and capabilities is still driven by new releases and proliferation. These types of changes still require a ton of human effort and hardware restrictions. In the 60s and 70s car lifespans were much shorter (around 100k miles), but today those are much longer, double that of 50 years ago. You can already see this shift happening in smartphones -- as evidenced by consumers not recognizing improvements between devices that are 5 years newer, although if I'm going to be honest, I find it really odd that you wouldn't notice some of the improvements between iPhone 8 to 16.

It's wasteful, but also not really all at the same time. We're combining a lot of devices and functionality into one unit which can reduce waste, and there's not a lot of things in your life you use as much as a smartphone -- even if you cycle it out every 5 years. There are components of these that are easily recycled as well. For many households the costs of smartphones are cut down as the devices are passed down based on seniority or priority, this makes for a really functional reuse system.

I did a bunch of work with WinPE for Win 7,8, and 10. Customizing the environment for automated deployment was a ton of fun. I really came to appreciate the tooling available in WinPE (and it's eccentricities). It's probably what really paved the way for my transition to Linux.

Remember -- the lazy, bad at your job, etc. assumptions are attributes you are putting on the characters in the ads. At no point in the world of the ad are these indicated by any of the other participants. Side character emotions are typically limited to confusion, interest, admiration, disbelief, and the ilk. Ultimately in each of the examples the participants are left holding what they "wanted", be it a sentimental birthday wish or a business correspondence that is "up to snuff".

Huh, a capsule cluster of 4 M4 minis might cost around $12k and provide more CPU/GPU/ANE/RAM and storage than a maxed out Mac Pro, which would cost more anyway. They probably resell for more too. If you have a defined level of compute and you need a cluster today for performance a Apple Mini cluster might be the fastest and most cost effective way to do it. I should note, the performance and compatibility jump from going with a small server cluster and Nvidia is probably worth 20K too.

It can still be simple -- look at it like this: 200 calories of Oreos provides very little additional benefits, while 200 calories of meat provides more additional benefits for your diet. It doesn't matter as much when comparing Oreos to meat, but it really matters when you're comparing orange juice to soda. The processing might play a factor, but really you're looking for calories containing nutrients that keep you alive and healthy -- processing level is pretty subjective.

The vast majority of homes in our city built between 1900-1940 are kit homes. This is likely true for any residential (non-urban) of that era. If you pay attention today you'll see that even spec houses are built off a standard set of plans from just a few sources. So even where timber and custom builders were more available they probably ended up building off a subset of common plans for the region based on weather and customer preferences. Someday after all the land developers are gone on to the next iteration, we'll have the same revelry about spec houses.

i think their market should focus on enterprise offers. Like the author mentioned, flush out the features of their hypervisor. Additionally some built in quality of life setup and native features (web dashboard? feature parity with vended solutions)for operating any infrastructure services like DHCP, file server, directory services, etc. This would compel orgs that need a “set and forget” system for this stuff. This isn’t anything new for FreeBSD — and in many cases they are really close, but it’s the clincher.

I don't understand why people are arguing against this. It's pennies to continue the service and utilizing an established system. All you have to do is say "yep, looks good". Why close this door?! There's literally no upside.

There was never a shoplifting crisis. Shifting consumer behaviors, changes in social behavior, and other boring (normal) things have affected business and public perceptions on the subject. For businesses there's good motivation for falling back on crime surges to cover for closing less successful stores or less than expect quarterly earning reports. For the public a group of teens running amok in pedmall is easy footage and engages viewers.

It's alarming to see these market-focused outlets fall for this type of "news" hook, line, and sinker -- there's not a mention of the possibility there was never a shrinkage crisis. The Brookings report was popular and I might have even come across it here.

If you're seeing retail theft on your TikTok FYP, then you need to evaluate what kinds of other videos you're interacting with. Granted, I don't know the numbers, but it's not a wave so virulent that it is inescapable. Like so many other things if you're fired up about what the youth are doing and morally affronted -- you're likely setting yourself up to look like a fool.

I'm nearing completion of my Cybersecurity Masters degree. It's fully online and takes around 20-40 hours per week of work. No thesis, but I do have a project/capstone course right now.

I don't have a computer science undergrad so for me the motivation was both in the potential for advancement, but also a chance to study the field I've been working in for the past decade.

School has some clear advantages:

* It standardizes taxonomies, frameworks, and methods. You'll be able to talk to others who are more ingrained in things like distributed systems or other deep fields and recognize the terminology and use the correct references.

* Things like ethics, establishing trust, and reliability of data are hard to learn "on the job" except in cases where you are directly prompted. These skills can be easily taught in a classroom setting.

* The efficiency of classroom learning is hard to beat. A well defined lecture and reading guide will show you just the right content to most efficiently convey a topic. Obviously this requires a lecturer to be good enough at their job to successfully perform.

Frankly, some of the arguments here against higher education are alarming. You should not be acquiring specific skills in your classes. You should have learned logic, algorithms, and how DAG works in your undergrad or through self teaching. Mastery of Apache Airflow is your own business, but much more straightforward with the aforementioned skills.

After continuing in my IT career and taking college courses, I have continued to regret my time as a younger administrator. I was given too much permission and it's only through luck and coincidence I never caused turmoil. Without any formal training I had access to so much data and potential to inflict problems. I can't see a world where that kind of malpractice is allowed to continue. In the same way that we ask forklift operators to guarantee the safety of those around them by passing a test, we should be asking our IT workers to prove their basic abilities before handing over domain administrator logins.

I had crackling in my M1 MBP headphone jack, any variety of plugged in, USB/DAC all summer/early fall. I assumed it was an audio controller issue. And then it kind of dissipated, until there was a warm day in October. I had just watered the plant on my desk. All winter -- not an issue. House is cool and dry, but as soon as the humidity gets above 60% or so, I get crackling. Not sure what I'm going to do this summer.

I had a period like this, I even stopped playing some games because it just was there anymore. My wife and I took a long road trip in 2021 and it gave me time to be peaceful (national parks helped a lot with this). I started grad school in 2022, it has really helped me with perspective and forces me to engage in my interests when other things are often easier. There’s drawbacks, but overall I’m happy to have motivation. In short: try something new!
