Mixing mushrooms and cannabis can lead to some seriously weird places, just read some reports on erowid.org. And Terrance did that repeatedly.

I did this once and ended up completely languageless for a moment, like unable to write and speak at all. Then I would have very intense visions so I would try to close my eyes but alas! my eyes have been closed this whole time. Then there were black holes eating up my field on vision, like clusters of dead pixels on a computer screen, spreading.

Also, I think Terrance suffered from a brain tumour which eventually killed him - I wonder if his migraines and experiences were influenced by that too.

And then there’s this quote from Leary, I think: “Hang up the phone once you got the message”. Psychedelics are no joke. I do advocate for them as sporadic psychological aide because they truly do loosen up the rigid structures in your mind and allow for a lasting change and improvement. But each session should be treated with utmost respect. There should be an understanding that each has the potential to be the best or the worst experience of your life.

Sure - here’s the shortcut:

https://www.icloud.com/shortcuts/1be6bb1d4b3c458eb4600314805...

Some notes on using it: - Don’t input any degrees if you don’t want the image rotated (I wanted an option to also take vertical photos)

- I usually save the image directly in my obsidian vault (folder)

- In the final “share” step you have to choose the obsidian app and then import it into your vault and into the daily note or somewhere else. Or some other app of your choice.

I digitise some of my handwritten stuff, but not all of them, just what I really want to keep or be searchable.

For that I created a simple Shortcut on my iPhone: take a photo > rotate it > resize by 20% > save file > rename > share with Obsidian and add it to either Daily Note or a specific note.

In Obsidian I have a Claude integration (Claudian Plugin) with an /ocr skill, which runs optical character recognition on the uploaded image and corrects any mistakes and adds some markdown formatting. I have a pretty ugly handwriting but it still does a great job and gets it like 95% right.

All this results in a lightweight (~200kb) image in chosen note in my Obsidian vault with a transcribed and edited text below it.

Generally I’m a big fan of Obsidian because it’s very intuitive and customisable. Like I also have an Excalidraw plugin there for example :)

But most things start in one of my notebooks before they get ingested into obsidian just because I like to handwrite and stay away from my phone as much as possible

As far as pencils go, I got annoyed by the “normal” pencils because their tips kept getting broken or flat and I would need to carry yet additional thing with me, a sharpener. So I looked into mechanical pencils and settled on a 0,5mm tip with HB or H leads. I ended up getting a couple of mechanical pencils to test out and then gave away most of them as gifts to friends. I really liked the Pentel Graphgear 500 for its metal grip which make it well balanced; the uni-ball kuru toga for its rotating tip that keeps the lead sharp at all times; and the Parker jotter for its full stainless steel body. They are each like 10-15€ on Amazon and I think they are all great quality and just fun tools to use

Funny enough, I have the 1080 and I tested qwen 3.5 9b on it today. I was positively surprised with the experience. It's no Opus but it did OK on the couple of queries and tasks I gave it. It's pretty impressive for a 10 year old gpu!

The problem with war is that you might not want it, but it’s enough if somebody else does. What sort of diplomatic magic was there do you think to have stopped Hitler in late 1930s? Let him rebuild industry and military? Allow him to cease the payment of reparations? Meet with him in person and treat him as a sane person? Give him Austria? Give him Poland? Well, Europe did all of that and he still went after France, Great Britain and Russia. And he wasn’t rational too and it was very likely he would fail. What about Putin? He got Chechnya, Georgia, Crimea, most of Donbass, not to even say much of billions in trade, and he still went after the whole of Ukraine. The thing about tyrants and bullies is that the only thing they understand and respect is strength in form of kinetic force delivered as a fist to their face or explosives to their forces.

I had this opinion before I actually used a smaller device. I now have xteink x3 which is 3.7” and it’s just awesome. After a couple of minutes it disappears in my hand like I forget I’m even holding a device. I wouldn’t use it for graphical novels but for regular books it’s just perfect

Sure. For me writing is an aide to thinking and remembering. When I have a thought, a task or anything I don’t want to lose, I just pull up my pocketbook and write it down. For my bigger notebook, I use it to jumpstart any task or project that needs several steps. I feel it helpful to write thoughts down, like it forces me to actually think thoughts through and end a sentence with a dot. I also sometimes sketch, make tiny drawings or tables to see ideas visually. Basically anything that gets thoughts out of my head and into some semi-permanent medium. Also for each day I usually write down its date and throughout the day write down what I want to do, what I did, and how I feel. I think it helps with emotional regulation. I believe in the act of externalising thoughts as a way to improve and remember them. I noticed this while listening to writers, as many of them are very eloquent and outspoken. No wonder - they are not improvising, these are the thoughts they thought through before. So I think if there’s something you care about that you would like to think more deeply or clearly about, it only makes sense to write it down. The physical movement of your muscles while you write also force you to be more deliberate and to remember better. If you’d like to start, I can recommend just getting a small notebook that fits in your pocket and a nice pen/fountain pen/mechanical pencil to go with it and just get into the habit of pulling it out as much as possible to just write down whatever concerns you at the moment. It keeps you off social media and doomscrolling too!

I have finally solved this for me. My system consists of two notebooks:

1. Small A6 pocket notebook which I always have on me because it fits in any pocket. Write down anything and everything in it. Bundled with a pen, leather cover, and tiny e-ink ebook reader

2. Big A4 notebook which I usually use at my desk. I used to have an A5 but since it’s not portable anyway, I might as well go with an A4

I really like this setup. There’s also a digital side to it, which consists of Obsidian for creating notes, Quartz for converting obsidian-generated .md files into static websites, and a simple self-hosted web server which gets new files via git.

Unabomber is a very specific example. He was an outspoken dude with some peculiar convictions which he liked to share with people. I don’t think it makes sense to compare him with all us normie shitposters

Our linguistic output definitely IS conforming. It would take our individual sustained efforts not to, and even then it works be hard for is to not to… language is a meme and AI is very good at infecting us with all kinds of memes

I guess it’s pretty basic to like FLW but god damn did he make some lovely houses. Incredibly cozy and livable, just a pleasure to simply reside in them. I just love their shapes, materials and spaciousness.

I too had it and remember it fondly, it got me through my studies. Very portable machine. I eventually swapped it for a thinkpad which I loved even more. Now I’m with a MacBook Air for the time being, but I think I’ll get another thinkpad when the time comes

About Russo Ukrainian war 2022:

Estimates: 600,000+ Ukrainian military deaths; 100,000+ Russian deaths; 30,000-40,000 civilian deaths.

This is VERY wrong. Almost all estimates go for at least 3x higher Russian casualties than Ukrainian. Russia has been attacking for 4+ years just throwing bodies at the problem with Ukrainians defending with technology. Where do these estimates even come from? Makes me question the validity of the information on this site

It's not just Africa. Take a look at the Ukrainian battlefield and you will see a similar trend: kilometers of trenches with some concrete bunkers here and there; even longer anti-tank ditches; along them dragon's teeth-type anti-tank obstacles; along them several rows of concertina razor wire; plus anti-drone netting along logistical routes. then there's vehicles with layers of cages, spikes and metal plates all over them to protect against drones, to the point where they look like medieval rams. with all the high tech precision weapons and satellites and drones, people sometimes forget that wars are about dealing and withstanding kinetic force.

Would this also mean lower latency between two locations? One interesting case for me would be lowering latency in StarCraft: Brood War, which is cursed by having 90% of its player base in South Korea, with the rest of us foreigners spread all over the world.

It’s snobbery, pedantry and a flex like a clean shaven face or a perfectly clean house: look at me, I can actually afford to do this Sisyphean task (or even better: I have it done for me!) more often than is necessary! Unlike you hairy dirty poor wild bastards

Clearly the act of combining various elements into a coherent whole is the added value here. Like musicians which take various samples and sounds and combine them into something novel and harmonic

It prevents the mass whorification of women. Yet human nature and market forces will always ensure that whores exist.

I’d be more careful using the word “whore”, especially as a dude. To me it kinda feels like the “n-word” equivalent but for women. Purely hurtful and meant to denigrate. Even more so in this context. Like there is not even a similarly hateful term I know for a highly sexual or “slutty” male. Hypersexual behaviour is something the society seems to have a problem only when it’s women. Why contribute to this clearly exist sentiment? Let people live and have fun and even make money off of it if they are not hurting anybody

Well, one of those is already a reality in each persons pocket, and the other is a vision needing a lot of money and effort to implement at all

These morons wasted over 1000 Tomahawk missiles within a couple of months to achieve nothing in Iran. And that's not even the worst part. The wasted PAC-missiles for the Patriot anti-air systems are.

I like the point about not doing a terrible thing not being enough if I am passively tolerating other people doing terrible things around me. We are all complicit by either active participation in evil or by inaction. Factory farming is evil, there's no argument about that. And it's industrial-scale evil: billions of conscious creatures living their worst possible lives. And there is no argument about them being conscious too: anybody who's ever owned a pet knows that these creatures have rich emotional lives, personalities, fears and joys. And it's not a necessary evil too - there is plenty of protein and calories without meat.
