The transition to longer daylight during winter solstice in the less-connected, less-commercialized times made for more grounded local, personal engagements. Writing that letter, making that treat, giving that gift, sharing that moment during the colder, darker times. Many of these individual productions are no longer created. Lost and replaced by layers of conveniences and alternative social interactions developed with each generation. Piled on through centuries of commerce. No wonder its evergreen.

For that time of year, as an aging introvert, the darkest days remind me to keep working on my one-on-one engagements.

Yeah real great for navigating around trees. And avoiding other natural plants that grow in the middle of grasses allowing them to flower and provide food for pollinators/arthropods.

This year I'm looking at getting a peening hammer and related tools to improve the blade. The one I have is quite soft. A second blade would be nice for thicker black-berry, bramble type stuff.

$305 for a scythe (snath + blade) to replace a gas-powered riding trimmer. Quite a different experience coming from a loud, heavy, bouncy, overly-destructive machine to a much more elegant, surgical, and meditative tool. No need for noise cancelling earphones, can listen to audio book/podcast/news/birds, and is more wildlife friendly (deer will walk and graze past me over avoiding the area entirely for one). Super relaxing once you figure get into a good form and rhythm. It's a slow-and-steady effort giving me a better position to observe the field or my thoughts.

Looking forward to using it on fresh, green growth this spring since I had received mid-summer when the grass was already tall and dry.

I'm going to have to dig into Wendy Carlos more and will thanks to this thread and comments. When I came across the above I must have gotten sidetracked with Laurie Spiegel.

I recommend reading the short book/guide The Underachiever's Manifesto as an alternative view (which someone here had suggested awhile back). Decide on the right amount of effort, place, and time to do something good instead of great. The person who will care the most about anything you do is yourself and good enough is good enough for most things in life. Especially when you're here for a short amount of time and there's so much you want to do.

I'm not sure if it's this episode or some other documentary, but I remember seeing the food experiment as well. Where wolves would not look to humans for help.

I'm not sure if that's such an advantage. Fashion shows are ahead of the ball by quite a bit and it takes 6+ months for end users to become accustomed/familiar/used to it to the point of starting to like it.

On the contrary, I would love to see what happens if they try. It would get the right kind of attention. This service is a great step in the right direction.

Not to rant, but here I go anyways. There's too much non-important noise here. Clicks and comments only get you so far. I'm thinking a "Was this article helpful to you?" type rating. Were you glad you read this article or is it TMZ-like content of the programmer/tech/start-up world?

I'm also tired of the "this is what helped me get things done" life process improvement / self help type articles.

I really like this idea and the simple execution of the sharing functionality. Since it's free, how do you plan to make money? And how's your infrastructure if this were added to a high-trafficked site?

Ever since MS removed the ability to dock toolbars to the left side of the screen (Vista/7) I've been using pinned start menu items and the Windows key to quickly access them. It didn't take long to get used to it and now I prefer having that tactile control. I won't miss the start button on screen. To me, it functions the same as the home button on the iPhone.

Likewise, though their mobile app appears to let you see the products without signing in.

Make it hackable and it'll have longer legs.

A daily to-do or grocery list is a good use-case, but for social updates it's quite wasteful.

Considering Hacker News is a developer heavy crowd, I'm surprised a second and third version hasn't come up. I've wanted to develop the same thing myself just to learn how to build an iPad app. And I'm sure my other ideas for creating different views of Hacker News are nothing special.

It's all about execution. I've seen the other one before and considering the basic style of it (newspaper page with multiple articles layout), it wasn't pretty enough to make me want to install. I really like the look of this app and look forward to trying it out.

In this day in age there are hundreds of options available whether it's backing up online, storing on an FTP, emailing it to yourself, or copying to CDs, DVDs, thumbdrives and storing it elsewhere (security notwithstanding). The last step would have even worked onsite because people are less likely to steal the little stuff like this.

Agreed. 20 years is nothing. Assuming he doesn't have a wife and kids he has nothing to worry about. Plenty of time ahead for improvements, which mostly comes from learning more diverse things AND networking more.

I'd be interested in knowing what type of messages people would send with the free method vs paid. You wouldn't send a birthday/congratulations note with ads, but maybe something witty/humorous to a friend. A semi-physical poke, as lame as it sounds.

For #1, older computers can still do web, email, and movies just fine. Unless you're a gamer, you have little need to upgrade as often as we used to.

Good reasons. Having a channel for customer feedback doesn't hurt, but ultimately it's up to you and what you feel is good for your product/business.

You may have a list of 10-15 projected features based on the direction you see the product going. However, once your customers begin using your product, their ideas may drastically change your product. For better or worse.

Deal sites are all about achieving leads so shouldn't their MVP be a nice website with a way to show your interest by opting in? Amazon's brand will play a huge part in getting sign-ups, especially since they know our shopping habits.
