Wow, so much is down. Nothing Cloudflare protected is loading for me in Indiana, and the Cloudflare dashboard is broken as well.

I hope it gets resolved in the next hour or two, or it could be a serious problem for me.

btrfs is good, but it's far from perfect. RAID 5 and 6 don't exactly work, it can have problems at high snapshot counts, and there's lots of even recent reports of corruption and other kinds of filesystem damage.

It feels more user friendly than ZFS, but ZFS is much more feature complete. I used to use btrfs for all my personal stuff, but honestly ext4 is just easier.

The daughter was vaping. I'm not entirely clear, how did taking away a phone stop that?

And I know a large number of teens that are honor role, on sports teams, and gesticulate, all while having a phone and actively use social media.

I also know teens with depression, insomnia, and poor grades, even though they don't have a phone or social media.

That's not to say phones aren't harmful, but clearly it's not everything.

I love Stoke (and I sorta really want to work there). It has like a startup vibe to it, but with some seriously advanced technology. Dogs in the workplace, and also two enormous, expensive, metal 3d printers.

That economic rift is not the fault of the DDR.

1. The West of Germany, particularly the Rhine, had large amounts of natural resources and much industrial capacity. This was true long before Germany was split. Take the steel production of Germany in 1944, for example. 59% of Steel production was in the West, 18% was in the East, and 16% was in the areas outside of Germany. This is not only more production, but more production per capita.

2. Like most of the former Easter bloc, the privatization of state companies resulted in economic downturn in that region. Especially since many of these state industries were simply closed and cashed out on. Jörg Steinbach, economy minister of Brandenburg, is quoted as saying "Some 70 per cent of East German industry disappeared".

There's a VW factory making gas vehicles pretty close to Berlin. I sorta understand where they're coming from (Tesla emits ~33 million tons of CO2 equivalent per year, and is significantly less efficient than bikes, public transport, or even some motorized vehicles), but this adventurism is at best having little impact, and they didn't really choose their target well.

Yeah, it's nice and all, but it's a node application and requires premium for TOTP.

rbw is written in Rust and doesn't need premium for TOTP.

On my phone, I'll just open a new tab and not even bother trying to get to the other tabs. The syncing is more phone -> computer than the other way around. And, beyond that, syncing is more useful for me for between computers.

Factoring 15 with quantum computers happened nearly 22 years ago[1]. The current record for factoring, with just Shor's and no minimization, is 21. Like you said, a lot of the hyped ones aren't practical. It's not that hard to pretend to factor large numbers on a quantum computer [2]. There have been a few newer algorithms can work with larger numbers, but they have scaling issues and so aren't useful for cryptography.

Really cool! As a 16 year old I also had servers in my room. I still have them. They're towers, but they have ECC RAM, Xeon processors, and lots of drives. Arch Linux is the base operating system, managed by Ansible. Everything is connected together with a mesh network. I have Nomad and Consul running on each server, and self-hosting has been great fun.

Honestly, I basically never use GPT. I tried, keeping it open and asking it questions and all that, but it just never provided me anything particularly useful. Just reading the documentation or talking to real people was just infinitely more valuable.

WolframAlpha and visual stuff have been more impactful for me, but they existed a long time before GPT. Even then, I don't use them that much.

People will still travel long distances, and because American passenger trains aren't of very high quality, they will be driving. The gallons per seat per mile of airliners are way better than basically any car, for example the 747 has 91 Passenger-miles/US gallon. Even some of the better gas cars struggle to get above 30 miles per gallon.

Additionally, its not really a massive win. Air traffic only makes up 8% of less than 30% of American emissions. Cars, on the other hand, make up more than 75% of that same 30%[0]. Switching to aircraft might actually make more sense for the environment.

That is not the labor theory of value. The whole point of LTV, at least in Marxian economics, is that workers can't be payed according to their socially necessary labor, because a surplus labor is extracted.

Besides, LTV as a theory is meant to be a description of the world as Smith, Marx, etc. see it, not a prescription for how things should be done.
