Another paper for the “Obviously” category. Otherwise the leafs at the top would be brown. But I did a PhD myself and our papers were exactly the same. Noone wants to rock the boat. Professors just want to get to their pension without problems. And people will cite things that are in line with their own stuff. So there you have it. Just proving the obvious time and time and time again.

In theory you are right, but in practice that’s not how it goes.

On Pandoc I agree. Word custom styles is possible I believe but it will be a mess (as usual with Word).

Uhm why not Typst? I published my thesis and another book in it and it worked great. They are also working on HTML output which should make it easier to create EPUBs. Until then Pandoc should work I think

Could be yes. I’m using a M.2 SSD with USB adapter and that seems to work well with my RPi 4. Wasn’t that expensive plus should last way longer than SD card.

I know the example, but as a counter-argument: often more expensive boots are not more durable. It’s about spending time to learn to spot the quality.

Of course if you are really poor, then you have to take expensive shortcuts, but for most people that shouldn’t be the case. Learning to do more with less money isn’t as bad as many people think. It’s also good for the brain to be a bit more creative.

I’ve been using Typst for years now. Wrote my PhD thesis in it [1] as well as a book. Works great; can’t recommend it enough. I usually barely use plugins because it’s either already included or pretty easy to write a bit of code yourself

My biggest hesitation with these things is that there is no limit to the possible bill I may receive when the agent goes haywire. Cloudflare doesn’t see this as a problem of course.

How does exe.dev differ from VPS + Caddy + some subdomain on a domain you already own?

For auth one can use Caddy and basic auth. Yes it takes a bit of work but it isn’t that bad. Plus zero subscription costs if your VPS is a Raspberry

Why the downvotes? I’m serious. On GitHub I’ve experienced many downtimes. My Forgejo hasn’t gone down yet apart from reboots by me.
