I personally reached a similar conclusion[1] and ended up building small little chrome extensions that solve some of workflow problems I face daily. This plus using zapier to automate the repetitive has brought back joy to programming as a tool rather than end goal.

yes this what I was curious about as well. Interesting the simplicity of creating snippets with markdown makes it easy to use for posts as well sharing code snippets ala gists

we found it insanely powerful but hit a lot of snags trying to see an easy view of tasks; especially with team members on the move switching between online and offline.

Ended up writing chrome extension[1] which hit a nerve with a lot of other people as well. We got thank yous from as as africa where teams are using asana with patchy connectivity.

google chrome has a multiple user option with quick switching, i have multiple profiles with different settings / extensions suited to mode.

saves the time to login to accounts [unless thats the whole point for you].

Love the tool using it since beta. Its an obvious pain point brilliantly executed. Between segment and google tag manager the analytics instrumentation has become exceedingly easy and better documented in the last 3 years.

And I know from experience lock in is immense, once you add an analytics tool there is no turning back. With segment you can play the field more easily, ofcourse while being locked in to segment :)

logmein has almost ruined my current favorite password manager Meldium. After they acquired it the service has become gradually to the point it does not work on half the sites stored in it. This week I finally decided to start migrating to LastPass (a few clients use it and it appeared a more dependable alternate). Guess will continue my search for alternates.

This is similar to how I learned javascript in almost REPL manner. Started with poking around in chrome developer console with quick copy pasting of code examples from stackoverflow / w3schools. Repeating and customizing until console logged what I wanted. With occasional diversions to understand compilerish.

And once it was working saving the code to the actual file.

My only regret was I discovered breakpoints a bit late. It was fascinating to pause code and just hover over different bits of code variables / parameters and see the data being transformed.

This is actually an interesting monetization experiment for google maps.

Google might create an ad type allowing all the different ride sharing companies to bid on this ad space. Should be able to attract pretty good cpm considering the user has already shown clear intent.

IM / text conversations are shorter but they also drift from one topic to the other. Generally chats are grouped based on people while emails are grouped based on topics. Categorizing them with subjects wouldnt really be practical.

its a good idea, making users supportive of advertising by giving some of it to charity. Now people with adblockers might more inclined to add reddit to whitelist.

it remains to be seen how the autonomy works out. whatsapp collects very little data about the user. Phone number, username. No chat history and even name is optional this contrasts with FB's approach of getting all the data. I think the data collection changes would be a good test of autonomy.

gmail looks like to be on this path already except instead of allowing you to queue messages its trying algos to manage it for you. (Priority inbox / email tabs)

exact presentation definitely looks like the major reason for using pdf. I think I need to find an app that does pdf parsing similar to Pocket/ Instapaper and makes the pdf adaptable to smaller screens.

interesting but an issue with that is pdf dont adapt well to different screen sizes. On mobile / tablet I am yet to find anything that adjusts it to screen size without panning and zooming. Especially two column layout favoured by publications.

yes there isnt a way within GA to aggregate metrics based on custom dims at the moment. we have on occasion done it through reporting api using cd to maintain a unique count.

had missed that thanks for sharing. I have been using custom dimension for uId in our client projects its worked out well, though a dedicated api method is always welcome.

userId bit has been there from the start in Universal Analytics. Its called custom dimensions and can be used to send any property about the user into the GA and then link it to a User or a specific Visit.

well charging higher than 25$/hr cuts both ways I originally started from elance a few years back and gave a low-ish rate but I was being ignored or being asked for discounts on near bottom rates, I realized if you want to be valued you need to have a rate that's respected.

I have tripled that rate and the quality of projects and clients has improved considerably.

ps do give a rough range of budget on elance but never an absolute number, if someone invites me to a project offering 20$/hr I run the other way.

i think the pitch here could be made more enticing. With SaaS you are not only paying for the current product but also for the implied updates and improvements that will follow. So a comparable model would be how much would a box software cost and what would its upgrades cost (as well as how often are they upgraded).

If the saas cost is being imagined for n years than they should also take into account the inevitable upgrades they would have to pay for with boxed software to keep the software productive.

for example we could take adobe creative suite and its upgrades together for a comparable saas offer.
