Seems we have some different definitions as I try to ignore most of it.

To me cancel culture seems like the trend of a mob of whiners to start to whine about something until its cancelled, like the latest Dr Seuss book outrage. Now it seems Amazon is the target. Or men. It's kinda like witchburning in the middle ages, and equally ridiculous. And toxic.

The frequent downvoting on HN to censure opposed opinions also seems like cancel culture. HN often seems like an enforced echo chamber "safe place" for bleeding-heart sentiment.

My definition of safe space is a place where people are not allowed to express a different opinion or ridicule someone so maybe we are in agreement on that. People are whining for the need for safe places (like unions) and so I say ciao, go ahead and whine loser.

Edit: and in case you want to say I'm contradicting myself about safe place and unions, I mean you people are trying to create a "safe place" within some else's business where their views cannot be challenged eg right to fire. (instead of being independent and going their own way).

But I don't want to argue the details as I'm trying to ignore most of it.

Gates is supporting many good solutions but this quote about trees is false. As outlined in the book The Treesolution, it's just "2 billion hectares of trees to disconnect all present and past CO2 what is produced through fossil fuels." [1]

I think the pressure to enforce covid lockdowns is as ridiculous as these people wanting to censure Dr Seuss. Where I'm at we're back to lockdowns on Sundays only, so stupid.

Basically we need to get on with life and ignore the overly-anxious who want to control/censure everyone.

I should have been more clear in that while I'm against unions I'm all for paying workers twice the going rate. And firing them if they don't perform.

And my comments about working harder for more money was about pay based on performance. ie produce more, make more. Go hard or go home. Not sure how that can fit into retail and warehouse there exactly but it probably could be done.

Pensions, 401K. Not my cup of tea. I prefer to watch trees grow. And have you seen how easy it is to launch a product these days? Well, actually nothing's easy.

Ok. I once took a massive pay cut to go from piece-work to union hourly wages. The days were longer and overall crew production was around 1/3 of what it should be. Work availability was based on seniority within the union instead of performance.

Unions are all about receiving more for doing less, and are very detrimental to businesses.

In my experience union workers are a lazy bunch that talk more then they work, killing time is their main job description.

And union administrators are just parasites. It's all political. I've seen teachers unwillingly have to go on strike for months then be stuck with a worse deal afterwards.

Anyways I think if people aren't happy with their job they should go work somewhere else or better yet start their own business.

Having actually worked a union job once, I'll say this:

Unions suck. Bezos should fire them all and hire people that want to work harder to make more money. And try to replace each whiner with a robot.

When the only source of food are giant super markets 95% filled with aisles of packaged processed products (be they generic or otherwise) then yes people are trained from birth to buy them.

It's funny realizing how people have been so trained to purchase processed products instead of dry beans etc.

For various business interests I have paid full price to read scientific studies quite a few times. And I felt foolish about it later once I learned about Sci-Hub. I'm sure there are many other entrepreneurs that could admit the same. Sci-hub is great and a very important service.

Yes the strict lockdowns in Peru were ridiculous and accomplished nothing except damaging the economy and putting the country in debt. Covid still got around both during and after the cuarentena.

Shopping malls have been back to near normal capacity for quite some time, movie theaters are finally reopening with a 40% capacity limit but discos still closed. [1]

Not in the US but having hired quite a few fat guys over the years (agriculture, construction) I can say that obesity has always turned out to be a sign of them being lazy and untrustworthy, even in management positions. All drinkers mostly.

Sadly one of them died recently at ~40, turns out he had an underlying heart condition since birth which might explain alot about his past performance.

Having said that I did know a particularly fat and ugly friend that has a great personality and was quite successful running her own small publishing business. Smarts and drive can shine through no matter what you look like.

If you can't get a job, start your own. Once you start seeing opportunities instead of wages you'll probably never go back.

As David Attenborough stated in his most recent documentary, the solution for healthy oceans and enough fishing for all is to protect 1/3 of the ocean and coasts with marine reserves. This model has proven to work in many places, now it just needs to be implemented worldwide by unanimous consensus. And enforced by a properly funded Sea Shepherd armada perhaps.

Works for me. Headaches without. I often wake up a few times each night to drink water to get rid of dehydration headaches. And I carry water with me all the time, thirst all day, headaches when it runs out. (like yesterday). Worse in the desert.

One guy I worked with suffers from extreme debilitating migraines and only drinks about 1/4 of the amount of liquids that I find necessary to avoid headaches. (which is about ~3-4 litres/day). I would tell him if I did the same I'd have major headaches too. But no, he doesn't want to hear it, says water doesn't work. Too dumb perhaps.

Actually I can feel a slight headache now so will go drink some more water to get rid if it. If it hurt more I'd reach for 400mg of ibuprofen or two and, of course, more water.

Rainwater refills it, evaporation blocked via siphon. Most deserts get at least 150-250 liters of water per square meter per year, often much more. [1] The boxes supply enough water for the roots to grow down to the capillary water below.

There is moisture within ~3m in even the driest deserts. The water in the box slowly releases to make a connection with the capillary water deep below for the roots to reach within the first year. It's a planting method, not irrigation. Refills during rains, prevents evaporation via a clever siphon.
