The end of my career is uncertain. My entire career has been uncertain. Not completely unplanned, but rather has progressed in ways I could never have predicted.

I had luck and opportunity to ride the cloud computing wave and it carried me into software development and distributed analytics systems, from a B.A degree in business. 20 years of lateral moves up to Sr. Level, but never outside of IC, yet.

I daydream about turning my DIY skills into some type of construction trades business while I am physically able. Or testing the waters with software consulting.

Manager role is not appealing working for someone else's company although just like construction trades, being an apprentice in that role is probably going to be the best way to learn it. I dread the meetings and politics and employee reviews. But if I really want to run my own business, at some my point I may need to be a manager on someone else's payroll. Even if just for a year.

I see 2 way to do this. A company (and PM) sees demand for the feature and they include it, ot it is forced by regulation.

A lot of these companies that originally had open standards formed with huge amounts of VC money and they prioritized growth over everything else. Then when they reached a certain scale, investors valued profitability and they slowly squeezed and monetized users until all of those open standards features were gone.

there's no practical use for that information

The information paradox is closer to us than we think!

Joking aside, another perspective on practical use is all of the technology and research advanced that have spun out of black hole research. Multi-messenger astronomy for example. We can point a telescope at the sky where two black holes merged.

The first time I visited Brazil, we gringos each ordered the large glass bottle of beer from a beach kioskue and drank from it. We quickly learned that was not the right way. The insulation sleeve and shared bottle is a much better way. It is more social too.

Saúde! (I don't drink anymore but cheers with my Brazilian coffee!)

Chances are there is OSS already running in commercially available vehicles.

Owners tinkering with ICE vehicles was and is a thing and I don't see how an electric power train makes that too much different.

Open standards and data formats would be a good middle ground to help avoid the type of problem with Fisker "unable" to migrate to a different provider. Although I wish that vehicles did not have to phone home to the mother ship at all.

Without the truth, a vision is a hallucination.

It saddens me how easily someone with money and influence can elevate themselves to a quasi religious figure.

In reality, this vision you speak of is more like the blind leading the blind.

they.. should have

Believe me, "they" tried. Just finding him was hard and he moved to a remote location. Gave away all of his possessions, including cell phone. Lived in a temperate climate where it was easy to get "lost" in the vegetation and live off the land.

I lost a good friend to this. Hope it helps other people.

The meds helped him but he didn't like the side effects so he stopped taking them. Went in and out of homelessness. In the end he thought he had superpowers and could fly. He could fly, but he could not land. It eventually took him.

I'm not upset with them, at all. I chose to get on an airplane to go see them. Then wasted a weekend sitting around next to each other staring at the tv and not really being present. That was on me. I wanted to be with my old friends, and could have left and done my own thing at any time.

It was a good learning experience for myself. My state does not have online gambling and I hope it stays that way.

"I" lost all interest. That's not a dig at them, or you. I've dealt with my own demons and am very comfortable differentiating between sharing my experience from the "I", and not drifting into giving unwanted advice.

I know myself, and I know if I gambled on my one sport where I follow one team, it would ruin the game for me. I would no longer watch for the intricacies of the game. I get worked up enough without the extra dopamine hits of gambling added into the mix. I hate the fact that half the advertisements are now for a product that ruins lives. My kids are being target with gambling ads when they watch with me.

These are still my old college roommates. Not good friends though. More like drinking buddies. And that's okay. I don't hop on airplanes to go see them anymore because I can get the same quality of interaction from our text message group. I'm at a place in life where I value deeper human connection, and its not there anymore.

That's all on me. I know plenty of people content to watch sports all weekend, with or without gambling. Good for them. It's just not my thing, and both perspectives can coexist just fine. One doesn't invalidate the other.

You’re negative here — and I think you know it. you have issues with this topic.

I absolutely have issues with this topic. It's a cancer on society, as the article confirms.

Some in people can gamble and not ruin their lives. Same with drinking. If you are one of those who can moderate in dopamine fueled areas of life, congrats. I can't, so I chose not to participate.

I re-read my comment and did not pass any judgement then, nor now. I simply shared my experience.

If you are triggered by something I wrote, that's all on you. I get it, no one dealing with addiction wants to be called out on it. That is less than helpful for either party.

I met up with some old college friends on a trip after 20 years of not seeing them, and all they wanted to do on Saturday and Sunday was sit around, watch football on TV, and talk about their bets.

No one was going for any team in particular. They were cheering for their bets to win. I lost all interest in the idea of me ever gambling after that.

There are certains sports I love to watch because I love the game. Gambling would ruin that for me. No thanks.

I think a big part of this math is avoiding huge balance sheet write downs on unoccupied real estate.

When Amazon was heavily investing in SLU in the 2010's they purchased all of their leased offices from the developer, Paul Allen's company.

It's the GE-ification of Amazon. Financial engineering with little care about employees or customers.

The only way out of this is probably unionization. Or a slow death from the inefficiency of idling or pushing out so many people who are job hunting while coasting.

I never imagined Amazon could be a place to coast and collect a paycheck until they fire you. Bet there's a ton of 2-job 1-person incomes right now. The company culture is rotten and the leadership principles don't have any meaning.
