Postgres is my favourite thing, but I find it's prohibitively costly when bootstrapping something that is lean and frugal.

I end up with a mixture of serverless storage like DynamoDB, S3, DuckDB on S3, and SQLite.

Am I crazy? How can one have a decent Postgres and not pay at least $100/mo (yes, when I say frugal I mean really frugal ... think solo founder that likes to stay on free tiers haha) -- I am aware of Neon/Supabase, but last time I tried them they ended up becoming a tightly coupled annoying dependency after scale that defeated the cost savings as they grew in costs and we ended up migrating to Aurora / RDS lol

EDIT: I'm aware of the self-hosted path but I find configuring the above things faster/cheaper in terms of my admin hours than the self hosted postgres db. Maybe I just suck at being a DBA or need better education on it, that said, I have AI now so I should give it a chance again as it's been a minute since I created a fresh thing

Spent half an hour just now benchmarking it against my current 3.5 Flash pipeline excited only see it regressed slightly (0.1% - 0.2% at most, for feature extraction work)

Seems like this is mostly a cost play by Google, hoping this doesn't bring 3.5 Flash capabilities to an end of life, and that 3.6 catches up or gets better.

I was trying to build something like that myself, but I had based it off IRC and was going to go protocol first not PaaS type of thing.

I think this is an unclaimed space where the future of work is bound to find itself in, though I'm not yet sure how/who is gonna win.

Totally agree with you that is yet another fork with some privacy added on top, which is why I'm still not satisfied as a consumer with the market.

I have permanently switched to https://github.com/imputnet/helium for a while now and have been quite happy with it.

Totally, I had the 4th generation one, and I used their water case enclosing. It was less than 30m deep, and within their safe range.

It was rated 30m, I went down less than that, and I used their enclosing thingy. Yes, I did expect it to work as their marketing team managed to convince me of such.

It wasn't a random object, it was a camera marketed for such environment.

pi runs in TypeScript and I like it, the target language of the tool, for me, matters only such that I can extend it. I like writing extensions, plugins, things, in TypeScript so I'm cool with that!

Claude Code is closed source, doesn't let me extend it beyond hooks, and these I write in bash anyways.

That all said, why should I bother about this change? Feels like a nothing burger to me, as an end user. This should matter more for those that are internal to Claude Code and Bun developing it.

I bought my first GoPro for a scuba diving trip in Mexico once. Was super excited, it was my first scuba diving experience too.

As soon as we hit deeper waters the capture button pressed itself down due the pressure and it wouldn’t come back up. That, unfortunately happened in a way that I couldn’t start a capture. Lost the entire thing, despite the camera being perfectly fine after we came back to surface.

Hated them ever since.

I saw in a YouTube video once, and I'll paraphrase because I forgot, something that resonated well with me about piracy.

They said piracy is never about cost, but almost always about a service issue. Basically people flocked to Napster (and the likes) at the time because it let them browse an infinitude of music which was, back then, incredible.

That was just market demand validation, a latent problem waiting for a solution to address it. Piracy just did it first. Once someone solved it, a little bit better, like Spotify did with realtime (instead of p2p waiting), and with indexing/filtering/curation/etc. It automatically won over piracy.

Then, the one fun argument it brought after, is that the same tools that ended piracy are likely the ones making it rise again. Netflix made everyone happy, but now we have a subscription circus. There's N streaming services, and keeping up with subscribing/cancelling/finding the one that has your content created a ... service problem!

So we're bound to see piracy rise again, not because folks don't want to pay $20/mo for streaming, but because they don't want to deal with the hassle of jumping across N subscriptions and keeping track of that.

I think some of the big media is trying to solve for that, which is why you see all of them now becoming "channels" inside each other, but I'm curious to see how this will evolve.

I was interested in their knob1, and, if you go to their website today it still says pre-order with shipping in August 2025 (stuck in the past), at this point I accepted it's vaporware [1]

I asked my friend to check his memories, and to probe Chat GPT about when it had gained knowledge of my pet's name, it felt like it "hallucinated" the answer as it doesn't have memory entries about my pet's name on my friend's account, it said something like my friend had told him about it last year (which he did not), and we do not share an account. Each of us have our own accounts.

The one thing I could think off was that my wife was on the free account for a while last year, and she likely used it to ask all sorts of things related to our pets, and I believe free accounts are fair game for training data. Still, for a generic prompt to one-shot my pet's name to a close connection was very strange to me.

Maybe the fingerprint (wifi profile, iOS device, etc) caused the training data to be more biased?

This sure got me thinking of how this can/could be exploited further though.

Tangential but I actually experienced recently something quite creepy and strange with Chat GPT iPhone app.

A close friend prompted it about some troubleshooting of a pet smart feeder and it responded with instructions but using my pet’s name to my friend.

I found that extremely strange for it to be a coincidence. My pet's name is not that generic for it to be in training data, and the connection to my friend makes it more strange to me.

That made me wonder if there’s cache pollution or some session data leakage in it exposing stuff. (My friend has been in our wifi for example)
