there's a bit on this at the bottom of the post: it's free for the rest of the year, and starting in 2024 the teams-based features will be paid. similar to figma or notion

it doesn't need to be so damn hard! we're big believers that basic mapping needs can be much much easier with great software.

today you can import KML, KMZ, GPX, JSON & GeoJSON, and export in GeoJSON. we're expanding this to more formats in the near future.

felt is best for folks who don't have deeper GIS backgrounds or programming backgrounds. it's easy to jump in and focus on your project without them!

API will be coming down the road!

glad to hear it!

searching for lat/lng, route duration, and better search are in the works

what's the deal with plus codes? i've heard about them a couple times but don't have a good sense of where/how they are used

Felt | Frontend Engineers, Elixir Engineers | REMOTE | Full-Time | https://felt.com

Felt is the best way to make maps on the internet. It's surprisingly hard to make a map today, and people in 15+ industries rely on them to do their jobs. Felt is the first easy-to-use collaborative mapping app, designed particularly to help with climate-related disasters like wildfires and hurricanes. Think "Figma for Maps".

We're founded by me – the former founder of Remix, which we sold for $100M [1] – and my co-founder Can who you've probably heard of [2].

We're particularly looking for great front-end folks who want to build a multiplayer experience on the web. Our FE stack is built using React, Jotai, Stitches, and a lot of other designed-to-be-fun technologies [3]. Ask us for a demo, it's hard not to love it!

We're well-funded and hiring our founding team. Looking for senior software engineers and product designers.

DESIGNER

Design is at the heart of what we do. You’ll be in charge of the user experience at Remix, helping to create a compelling simple app used by cities across the world to plan great transit. Our company was founded by designers (Sam and Tiffany) and we take this stuff very seriously.

You’d be a good fit if:

- You have experience creating and maintaining products with real-world users.

- Your visual design is strong and opinionated.

- You’ve worked closely with engineers to get great design out the door.

You should be comfortable making detailed graphics and figuring out how an application should work and feel.

To apply, email jobs@getremix.com with a portfolio and a few words on why you're right for the role.

+1 went for months without insurance because Zenefits continually promised things they could not deliver. Could not imagine a worst experience for such a critical thing.

Gusto (Zenpayroll) has been peach perfect. Going to transfer our healthcare benefits to them as soon as we can.

Transitmix | San Francisco | Front-end and Back-end Engineers

http://transitmix.net/jobs

We're rebuilding urban planning tools -- the stuff cities use to plan the streets, zones, and transit. We launched a better bus route planning tool in January and already have 28 cities using it plan their transit networks.

We're hiring for two roles:

- Software Engineer. Someone to dig into bus optimization algorithms, wrangle gps and ridership data, and manage geospatial web services. You'll have a lot of leadership around this and we're flexible about the language (our existing codebase is ruby and python).

- Product Engineer. Blend javascript and design to build great UIs. We've put a lot of effort into building an easy, beautiful app for a complex domain, and you'll be in charge of keeping that standard.

Email us at jobs@transitmix.net

Are you learning from your early adopters as you go?

Yup, we talk to them daily. And they keep sending us love notes. Public transit professionals are some of the nicest people you'll ever meet.

How much and how often do agencies re-plan their routes?

Generally they'll look at changes a couple times a year. But we're at a unique time where many cities haven't changed their networks in decades, and are going through a big redesign process.

How much of planning is driven by politics vs driven by data?

Like anything else in .gov, some combination. Our goal is to push it heavily in the data direction.

What positions you all vs the consultancies who do planning? Would you expect consultants to be your customers or competitors?

We're a set of tools to helps pros out -- we don't do the planning ourselves. Plenty of consultancies are already using us.

Prism Break 13 years ago

This is great for us. We understand these tools and can use them. But most people don't. So if all geeks switch to the things on this list, we've left most of society just as susceptible as before.

Other, possibly better, solutions:

1) If you work for one of the companies listed as "proprietary", you can do the most. Stand up and say you care in company meetings. Tell managers and executives that it's worth finding better ways to secure, anonymize, or not collect information in the first place. Even if it comes at the cost of profitably or usability.

2) Authors of lists like these: Instead of saying all commercial software is lousy, compare them to each other! Make having secure, private software an actual selling point that people can understand.

3) Developers, designers: make beautiful, usable software that is secure and anonymous by default. Don't have privacy as your ONLY selling point. We can only win if we're private and amazing.
