This is exactly what I mean. A couple of social policies are the whole world to you: I don't care where trans people go to the bathroom, that's not going to make me vote Hillary and have to live through more wars and recessions.

I understand that this place is 99% liberal and that you went as far as to petition to kick Peter Thiel out because of his trump support, but please realize most Americans agree with trump. That's how you lose to him. Make jokes all you want, we won.
The same sentiment were made after brexit. Nothing bad happened. The markets didn't crash, society didn't collapse.
So many comments in this thread regurgitating the same drivel, which by the way adds no value to the discussion. A man spends decades of his life working on something, and now you're telling me, after he achieves his goal, that he's having an epiphany and no longer believes in it?
There's a political bubble here on HN (a lot of hate for Brexit/UKIP), but that's not a reason to be able to make silly comments like this.
Then why drop jQuery? "It needn't be part of the default stack any more" doesn't hold up as a reason any more because it's not about whether something's needed or not but whether it's useful.
Most sites require jQuery, most developers are happy using it, why put the effort into getting rid of it?
Same logic is used in free market arguments: Workers leaving jobs to go to other companies creates an incentive for employers to improve work environments.
In both scenarios the workplaces become better off, but what really happens in practice is less than ideal.
Site doesn't load in Firefox. Works in Chrome.
This community often seems to think that something is dead just because people don't use it in SCs or in startups, completely forgetting the average person. By their logic Windows is dead, Oracle is dying etc. the only successful companies are Google and Apple.
I love this statement, but the need to eat has been driving human beings for a very long time. It would be a truly profound statement if we could prove this.
You could look to many European countries for an answer. The unemployed receive welfare, now tell me how many of those are still motivated enough to do anything when there's no fear of hunger. Are these people happy receiving enough welfare to live a modest life, or do they strive to do more?
No matter their importance to their community, they can’t stay if they can’t pay
Investors make money, franchises notch a new location, and the neighborhood suffers a significant death.
What are these businesses that are so great to the community yet don't make any money? If everyone's taking their business to franchises it's because they (the customers) prefer them and franchises provider a better service.
Seems like the author just longs for independent stores and the like simply because he dislikes corporate culture, and would rather pay more to avoid it.
One of the reasons people regain is that they've gone on diets with a calorie intake that is too low (or lacking in protein) and experienced muscle atrophy rather than fat loss. A decrease in muscle mass also decreases their metabolism, which means their BMR is now lower, but because they don't know, when they return to their seemingly normal calorie intake, they'll quickly put the weight they lost back on.
One of the most insightful studies I've read on dieting is that people trying to lose weight underestimate how many calories are in the food they're eating. It's not surprising once you start logging everything you eat -- you'll see that a lot of common foods are extremely calorific.
I can't find the exact study but here are two on the matter
It is all about money laundering
Maybe, but (apparently) in China many dead malls that were never really used were built simply to raise the GDP.

I have and it's very insightful. The people in the studies that were least competent were also, relatively, the most delusional of their inadequacies. This principle explains why you get people with little coding experience applying to developer jobs and failing the simply FizzBuzz exercise.
I had never heard of Chapel and was looking for something along those lines.
What's interesting about it that makes it worth taking a look?
I don't know much about watch culture (I have a $10 Casio) but I heard someone say that a $1,000 watch is expensive, but a $30,000 watch is an investment. Not sure if people really pay attention to watches but Google "investing in a watch" and there's plenty of articles about it.
Within computer science, I found "Introduction to the Theory of Computation" by Sipser to cover a lot of ground in a concise and comprehensible manner.
That article by Susan kept coming to mind while reading this one.
I think that most women that actually work in technology have feelings closer to the ones expressed here than the stuff that a vocal minority spreads all over the internet.
I couldn't see pg in the leaders list but he does in fact have the second most karma (unless there are others missing from this list).
They mean that, once you have paid and received permission to use the work, you shouldn't be restricted in your use of the work.
Including reselling the work. This is one part I don't understand. One person pays full price and sells it to everybody else at a lower price, until the product is free as in, yes, free beer.
Modafinil. Works great (14 hours of focus and productivity). At $5 a pop it's not something I can afford daily.
If something cheaper becomes available I'd use it.
I read an argument that if you know you'll never be able to delete your account and posts, you'll be more careful about what you say. I don't think this is something I'd be considering when writing posts. We change as we get older and recognize that things we may have said in the past were stupid, but now we're stuck with them for life because they're on an interet forum with our name next to them.
This is why I now only post anonymously.
Not everyone feels like they're wasting their life because they're indoors when it's sunny.
I just made a post saying I didn't jump to conclusions, it was only after years of training that I even considered the possibility that something was wrong with me. Never browsed /fit/ not sure what you're trying to say... I won't try to convince you -- I'm sure there are many that like to make excuses so you think I fall under that category too.
I did Starting Strength with a gallon of milk a day (6000 Calories). I was able to improve my lifts (slowly) but I looked horrible (so much fat around abdomen I looked pregnant). Switched to hypertrophy with 2000-3000 Calories whilst cutting/maintaining. I researched this well and tried really hard so I'm not jumping to conclusions here.
I bulked and cut as many recommend. During the bulk phase I put on about 10kg, after which I lowered my calorie intake to try to reduce my body fat and look better (I was skinny-fat). I worked out with some friends, similar age, and they were able to build muscle and increase their lifts at a much higher rate than I could.
I was just at the gym watching the 30-year-olds at the pull-up bar building muscles in three weeks. And I’m at the pull up bar and nothing’s happening
While many of you are thinking that he's making excuses (he might be) or that the other guys worked long and hard to build muscle, I can relate: I've been lifting weights three times a week for the last four years. I still look average, and yes I'm eating and exercising properly.
I believe it might be something to do with testosterone. I was always skinny, high body fat and frail. I worked super hard to even start exercising, eventually I was able to get into routine but still now I feel like I should look much better after all this time.
What's the deal with testosterone in UK? I'm 27, is it likely that I can get it? Are there home test kits I can get (reliable ones)? Do testosterone boosters actually work (I can't verify without testing)?
How was it? I didn't have an option to take CS either for GCSE or A-Level. There was IT but most university departments actually discouraged it and recommended just taking science and maths.
You answered your own question partly. It's simple, exercise and don't sit in front of a computer screen all night. Yet most people won't do this and complain that they have "insomnia" (the word has been overused to the point that going to bed past midnight now makes you an insomniac) and seem to think they now need pill/technology.
I liked this visual explanation
