I totally agree. But shouldn't we trust the data more than one person's anecdote? The original article clearly did not find any discrimination against white male. Rather than discussing that result, we are here commenting about one person's anecdote.

That your post is on the top shows the "white male" bias in hackernews audience. People are up-voting your personal anecdote and your "I am a white male victim" post more than the discussions about the actual results on the original article.
Just go see the latest papers in CS - https://arxiv.org/list/cs/recent A lot of authors have Asian names (Chinese and Indian)

Why are people like this guy casually dismissing research done by other experts? Why do people think they are experts in matters they have absolutely no clue about? Just because you know how to write code to build a webapp doesn't make you an expert in COVID. The whole COVID issue is exacerbated by politicians and psuedo-experts (like the commenter above) who think they know it all.
This is cruel and wicked. Hopefully the courts stop this madness.
That's not true. Almost all state universities charge a much higher tuition fee to foreign and out-of-state students (sometimes two to three times higher). That higher fee is used to subsidize the fee of in-state students. Sorry to be crass, but please do some research before spewing your bullshit online.
Here's a great npr podcast - https://www.npr.org/2020/06/05/871298161/police-unions-and-p...
Most people who contract the virus are asymptomatic, and they spread the virus without even realizing that they have it. It seems quite obvious that if we encourage everyone to wear masks (including the asymptomatic carriers), we can greatly reduce the number of transmissions. We know the virus transmits through airborne droplets, and science is pretty clear that masks reduce the spread of those droplets.
Do people in Brazil and Australia use Air Conditioners? Air Conditioners reduce both temperature and humidity and make a more favorable environment for COVID-19 transmission. The use of Air Conditioners in very low in India because only the richest can afford them.
I think we should encourage people to turn off their Air Conditioners, especially in indoor places like malls and bars where people gather. ACs reduce both temperature and humidity and make a more favorable environment for the virus.

You are completely discounting the power of compounding. Saving every penny won't make you rich in a year or even in 10 years. But think about 20 years in the future. Think about retirement. Every extra dollar that you put into your 401K will make a meaningful difference on how you retire in 20-40 years. Here's one real example for you: 96-Year-Old Secretary Quietly Amasses Fortune, Then Donates $8.2 Million - https://www.nytimes.com/2018/05/06/nyregion/secretary-fortun...
The audio is so realistic. I could have been fooled easily.
Venmo, owned by paypal, is very popular in the US. People use to split expenses among friends.
Honey sponsors a lot of youtube personalities. I remember Mr Beast talking about them. Seems like it paid off.
Why are you so hung up on aligning solar noon with with 12:00 PM? People care more about when the sun rises and when the sun sets. Nobody, besides you, cares about when the sun is at the highest position in the sky.
If he can set 25% tariff on everything imported from China, what's stopping him from setting 2500% tariff on everything? Wouldn't that effectively and immediately stop all trade with China?
May be you can make a video and post it on youtube. People would definitely watch it. It's extremely difficult to do a hundred pushups in one go - even for athletic non-obese people.
How much of that sales jump is from increase in cost of steel? All US companies are now forced to buy more expensive US-produced steel. This is exactly what economists predicted. US steel companies make more money at the expense of everybody else.
The mainframe batch-processing computers might be efficient. I have no idea. I am taking about the "ACH system". It's supposedly automated but it shuts down during the weekends. There is no way to tell how long it will take for transaction will take to complete. If you listen to the NPR podcast, it took one of their transactions 8 days to complete. And why is "speed" not a measure of efficiency when it comes to transferring something?
Here's a great podcast on NPR's planet money if you want to learn more - https://www.npr.org/sections/money/2018/01/10/576879734/epis... You cannot just give me two anecdotes to defend one of the most inefficient systems in the US.
I really wish they succeed. It takes 3 to 5 business days to transfer money using ACH in the US if you don't want to shell out 25$ for wire transfer. Transferring money is just about transferring a few bytes of data. Why does it take 3 business days? Why are customers still forced to shell out 25$ for instant transfers?
No, the jobs in engineering field has not dried up. I wish people did some research before spewing up lies. "But every engineering occupation has added jobs, the most coming among mechanical engineers." - https://www.forbes.com/sites/emsi/2014/09/12/the-most-in-dem...
Is there anything that US gains from cutting off Huawei?
It will only be available to everyone after it's patented and sold to a big pharma. All made possible by the great Bayh–Dole Act - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bayh%E2%80%93Dole_Act
This planet money episode seems relevant : https://www.npr.org/sections/money/2017/09/29/554603161/epis... Yeah, no private insurance company will knowingly insure houses in those flood prone areas that are pretty much guaranteed to flood. With the subsidized government insurance, people keep on rebuilding and collecting that free money.
I don't know where you got your information from. It's half true. No, immigrants do not have abysmal rates of employment. The unemployment rate for foreign-born persons in the United States was 4.1 percent in 2017 compared to 4.4 percent for native-born persons (Dept of Labor, Labor Force Characteristics of Foreign-born Workers Summary). Immigrants do use more entitlement than native-borns, but that's because immigrants tend to have more children. Given how low the fertility rate for native-borns is, the entitlement that immigrants use to bring up their children probably pays itself off once the children grow up and contribute to the economy.
If you lose a piece of an old memory from sleep deprivation, you are not going to magically get it back once you catch up on your sleep. It has happened to me when I pulled all-nighters. I just couldn't remember that friend's name or that old password.
Looking at comments above, I find it extremely disheartening about how bitter Americans have become. Why are people celebrating the downfall of Apple - the company that comprises 3.94% of S&P 500, and is probably the single biggest holding of 401K retirement accounts. No American benefits if Apple falls.
