I know I'm not that good at predictions, I didn't really understand the Watch at first, the iPhone I knew was cool right away but still didn't think it deserved the massive hype the first version got... still I have to say if I had the Vision Pro sitting next to me right now I probably wouldn't be using it, that's the difference. It's not even about the price, I'd have used the 1st gen Watch and iPhone or pretty much anything else Apple ever made if didn't cost anything, I'd wear it or carry it around even if they didn't do much. I wouldn't want to wear this thing even if it were incredibly useful, it would be a chore.

Altman's dealing with being the face of a civilization-changing (or ending, who knows) technology and probably a horribly uncomfortable amount of sudden fame, I think people forget this when they're trying to pick apart everything he does and says. I'm not going to guess why he (or Microsoft, or whoever) wanted that taken down but the site agreed to do it.

This Primary Wave company is buying up publishing rights and because of some IMO bad court decisions can claim to own the melodies themselves, not just the recordings. No, I had an idea for using it to summarize news articles including an "objectivity bias" rating. I'm still playing with it but I'm not sure it's going to work because of it's tendency to avoid things it's programmed to avoid.

Yeah I know Newsbusters is garbage but that's kind of irrelevant, that was just one of many stories I fed it. The point is it straight up lied.

I haven't used BingGPT but just for example having chatGPT summarize news articles about things it doesn't want to talk about is bizarre - Here's an example of it summarizing a story about a city councilman that was murdered: https://i.imgur.com/QV9jAkp.jpg it completely ignored the murder part and said he switched parties, which it totally made up. A second attempt said he was "shot and changed" because apparently it didn't want to say "killed".

A game Reddit was playing is trying to get it to respond as Woodrow Wilson, a famously racist president - the most accurate thing I could get it to do was this: https://i.imgur.com/D8JLziW.jpg which is not very accurate. Try getting it to act like Sheriff Bull Connor and it will refuse, but it has to comply for a president so it gives a totally misleading impression with major factual errors.

And these are the times I actually got it to respond, it seems 50% of the time it takes offense to something innocuous and scolds you for asking.

Article is a little infuriating, you don’t jailbreak it just to create mischief, at the moment it’s basically unusable for anything except very technical things because it takes offense at virtually everything. It constantly generates factually incorrect data because reality doesn’t line up with its prime directive, which is to be “safe”. It’s a major, I’m going to say possibly catastrophic problem.

And after creating an alter ego you realize it actually is capable of coming up with for example (sort of) good poetry and jokes.

This is a few years old, the online world has evolved a little since then - as an extreme example the other day I searched the name of the trans swimmer who won the national title on Reddit and saw nearly every thread was locked. They’re not allowing it to be discussed on any subreddit.

So no, free speech can’t be moderated and still be considered free speech. Not for long anyway, the rules get tighter and tighter and the punishment for stepping out of line gets more and more severe.

I think people are picking up on this though and we’re starting to see a resurgence of old fashioned liberalism. The challenge is always how to allow free speech and not have everything turn into a sewer, but that’s a problem as old as the Enlightenment.

People forget that in the “previously on The Sopranos” recap for that episode they include a scene where Tony’s on a boat and somebody asks him what he thinks happens when you die. “Nothin’, everything goes black” he says.

Everybody who watched that episode saw that, everybody saw Obvious Hitman creeping around in the background, “Don’t Stop Believing” is perfect because you have to be in complete denial to think that ending was ambiguous.

I recently rewrote a computation-heavy Typescript program in Go and what once took 12 hours can now be done in about 3 minutes - there was also some trickery involved running things in parallel but Go made that possible, trying to do that in JS just froze my computer.

Plus it’s a binary I can drop anywhere, will always be backwards compatible, no updated dependency is going to break it, I’m a fan of Go.

I would guess it’s probably that, some kind of secret trial period, or some scheme to get out of paying benefits. I can’t imagine Amazon of all companies has a pattern of “accidentally” firing people they just hired.

This is maybe the first relatable comment I’ve come across in here — work kills, the stress of having to be there on time, eating fast food because you don’t have time to cook, no time to exercise because you’re driving an hour a day, all the other things in your life piling up because all you seem to do is drive back and forth to work… I mean people aren’t even getting vaccinated because they’re worried about being able to show up to work the next day.

It’s a dream for a lot of people to just wake up, get a cup of coffee and sit down at their computer, to not have to get out of bed in the middle of the night, plan bowel movements like a military campaign and run around like a maniac all day every day.

Hell they might already be paying a penny per stream to some major labels, and everybody else takes whatever's left over, we have no idea.

Maybe Drake's label demands a penny per stream for his new album or they pull it. And then somebody else who's on a tiny label gets 0.00000000001 cent per stream because that's all that's left.

They really need transparency, the labels will never be transparent so Spotify has to be. If nobody's transparent about these deals then there probably needs to be legislation.

That would be obvious anti-competitive behavior on the part of music labels if that's what's going on, and knowing them it probably is.

I think the test case is probably r/libertarian where the mods are extremely hands-off, you’ll still get the downvote hammer and it’s sometimes infuriating but it’s nothing like saying something unpopular in r/politics, which isn’t even one of the worst ones.

Typescript is fun because when something breaks I get to play “am I stupid or is Typescript?”

It seems to be about 50/50 and I get a little ego boost when it’s not my fault. Go is no fun, when something breaks in Go I know for sure I did something stupid.

My favorite is when Typescript/Angular magically fixes itself, which I swear happens even though nobody believes me. Sometimes I think JavaScript held together with duct tape might not be completely fool-proof.

That said the “tele-sense” or whatever it’s called that tells you the errors as you type is truly awesome and so I put up with the weirdness and occasional wasted time.

Not in the apps though! Can’t get porn on any Reddit app, gotta use the browser. So I’m told.

I kind of disagree, Reddit has its own problems (nation states run by warlords) but the downvote button and anonymity solves some of the “outrage for likes” stuff that plagues Twitter and Facebook. I haven’t seen the frontpage you’re talking about in years and I doubt many users do.

I really don’t know why FB and Twitter don’t add an anonymous “dislike” feature. Maybe they tried it and it caused other problems, who knows. More likely though they see that outrage increases engagement even if the toxic environment chases people away eventually.

It would be fine except the user has no way of proving to the developer they already bought the app, which would be handy for continuing to get updates elsewhere. Apple doesn't share anything about who bought what.

It seems like what it can't do is "interestingness", I tried a picture of a fashion model who's ridiculously pretty but a little unconventional, looks a lot like a young Uma Thurman, and it gave her about a 7. I tried another girl who's very pretty but maybe not with the same "va-va-voom" thing and it gave her a 9. I tried a young Harrison Ford and he got a 6.6. Two different Audrey Hepburn glamour shots got a 10.0, but a movie still of her without the same lighting and eye makeup gave her a 7. A picture of a young Richard Gere got a 6.5.

I think maybe the problem is the data is based on what people SAY is attractive, which is maybe different than what their brain says is attractive, if that makes any sense. They're paying money to look at the fashion model, Harrison Ford, Richard Gere and Audrey without all the eye makeup yet they're only getting 6s and 7s.

And every evil subreddit I've come across was the result of "effective moderation", they moderated everyone who isn't evil.

Lax moderation, the good ole downvote button & find some way to discourage circle jerks, that's probably all you can do. You're never going to make the Internet not be a sewer though.
