Watching Hacker News since 2008 never had an account, so I created one.

I never saw Apple call itself this way, but I can be wrong, I believe it's more of an Apple rumors thing, like some years ago some people were telling how Apple would just put it's custom designed CPU on Macbooks and build everything by itself, including GPU.

This happened even here in HN, I think these guys are the equivalent of the MS fans back at the time of the dot-com bubble telling how MS would rule the world.

EDIT: a "this" became "these"

I didn't said it was, but if you think their high margins can be sustained forever then I think the discussion is over and you're just cheering for Apple, nothing wrong with that, but it's not what I think is sensible for people to do, cheer for Apple, Google, MS or whatever.

It's now written on the wall for everyone to see that devices will fall in price in the next decade and with it will go profit margins, money will be made by volume of sales, Samsung is just where like Nokia once was in this place, Google just want to accelerate that because it makes business sense to them.

Apple already realized that as their recent announcement demonstrated.

There's a couple of replies to your post but no one of them really care that HN got a shitstorm of posts about American politics in the last 2 years or so and that it became a lot worse two months ago with posts about NSA populating the front page. I really don't see how this is different from quora.

I don't really know how this is different, I just since left reading HN on a regular basis.

Must be a different Argentina, I was there these days and although some guys that works in the Argentinian branch of the bank I work were very tech-savvy and were complaining the restrictions of moving money out of the country they did not cite Bitcoin, at all, some were venturing with buying gold and moving it out of Argentina but that was all.

For me it was odd, bitcoin appears a good way to move money from there to the other side of the River Plate.

I'm only throwing my opinion, I'm not really into security but I spend some time studying networks and low level stuff as a hobby, any specialist will probably point my errors below.

Depends on the device no? Suppose you have a chip with a backdoor, if said chip depends on a OS to operate and you can for example block connections (using a packet filter, either blacklisting the undesirable ones or drop all except the whitelisted ones), then whatever backdoor is there will need an unblocked connection to be activated.

As I see it the majority of hardware backdoors would only be useful if you can have some sort of access to the device, either remotely in a network the device is connected, physically (as far as I understand that's how Stuxnet spread in Iran) or if the user willingly executes some code that exposes the backdoor to you over some routing.

1. people voted up, better one of these than the other 20 or something posts about the FBI or NSA populating the top posts.

Maybe ignorance yes, the fact is I do not share their experience, I only watched dubbed stuff in either Hebrew or Portuguese until my early teens although I learned Yiddish first. It was from mainly 2000 to 2002 that I learned to read subtitles and after that I never needed it anymore unless in a language that I don't know.

Good to know you're not in that second group.

I not a fan of Satriani but keep rocking.

The majority of stimulation we receive is just waste of time by your philosophy.

You're right about one thing though, my American (and British, Australians, Anglo Canadians among others from the same language group) friends are lazy as hell to read subtitles generally, the majority never ever getting interest of learning another language since almost anyone learns some English, which really puzzles me.

At least for me if I drink too much my heartbeat accelerates, so I have no reason to drink a lot.

I love Erva Mate (I'm Brazilian, it's how we say "Yerba Mate" in Portuguese) and try to drink some every morning. I love a beer as well.

Out of curiosity, are you from South America?

Insurance underwriting probably will become more and more automated, the exceptions are the cases with large values involved, in the short run, definitely this will be automated some day as well, or insurance in which only a small part of the population pay for insurance and the sample is small too do any meaningful statistics.

Anyway there'll probably always be people behind the algorithms doing the modeling or programming at least.

I for one wanted to do some tedious non automatable box editing over ssh, emacs have a default extension (mode?) to do this which did not worked in the terminal, tried some quick stuff on config, did not work. Every page I found on how to fix the stuff forced me to read for more time than I had to do the task, I just did it with vim.

I'm just trying to learn some emacs and although I see its value, the emacs experience is not for me, my vimrc is like every other config file that I have, a bare minimum. People who use emacs generally tweak the editor with thousand of lines of elisp.

There's no unstable 2.7, it's mainly because of that. The change to 3.0 happened basically to signal that.

EDIT: For those who do not remember the 2.x stuff when x was a odd number the version was unstable, when it was an even number the version was stable and basically was what distributions used.

I'll answer because you appear to be serious about that but consider that I think Ayn Rand ideas pure moonshine, I'll go to sleep now and maybe later I'll come back here and write properly about my opinions on her if you wish.

It's my experience the majority of people just don't really care about political philosophy, they just live and that's all, they are really more interested on who are romantically attracted to them than to think about all the stuff Rand wrote.

I really don't know what you were taught, I studied in a Jewish religious school (a Yeshiva) and for the matter my experience was very different than that of my peers when I reached university, in university I was taught mathematics only and professors had a myriad of political views, including the one who introduced me to Rand's work. But yes, the traditional Jewish thought is very different than whatever Rand ever wrote.

> Are we supposed to make the general category suffer because some 20 generations back a ancestor of their made a mistake.

So what's your proposal here? I would love that each generation we had the wealth allocated on a purely merit basis but the world does not work like that, I know a fair share of mediocre people with fortunes who can send their children to better schools and some smarter poor fellas that can't, and besides I live in Brazil and ignoring the past did not produced a really better alternative.

EDIT: Text was bad

Dude I live in Brazil where we have dish washers and washing machines for decades and here the upper middle class really never let their maids go with a fair salary or even said they were unnecessary once these stuff became available, I doubt they will disappear overnight, just like they did not over here.

I'm not a network engineer but I believe Tier 1 and Tier 2 networks are needed for the Internet to exist. They do not act as a central authority, but the Internet itself needs them to work like it do now.

I simply do not understood what you wanted to say by your last paragraph.

EDIT: To clarify my point is that I believe the internet is poorly decentralized, it simply means some guys has too much power to shutdown traffic from entire networks to even reach the Internet if they wish or when it's convenient to them, if we ever have another large scale global war I believe this will happen.

I think you need to test the netinst Debian image, the iso is only 180 mb, there's even a biz card version which is 50 mb, I generally use this for testing.

You realize there are tomes and tomes defining languages standards just that

def foo (Real): Real

do not have any ambiguity, right?

I really don't see how this is much more clear than

r:R^m -> R^n

Anyway, functions in mathematics are not the same thing as functions in programming languages, one generally can simply can be called subroutine, the other is commonly called mapping, they are not even same stuff. They're not in the same class.

There's really no "mathematical notation" as you think there is, people just use conventions for what we have, you can invent your own and advocate that's it's better, physicists and engineers do that all the time, and people will decide about it, maybe it is and you invented the new decimal numbering system for all of mathematics but probably you're just too naive.

I saw a documentary about this machine when I was younger, the plan was to use the "Caspian Sea Monster” only to military purposes, as probably anything designed in the URSS back then, mainly for movement of soldiers and tanks across the waters.

EDIT: The documentary provided above by manaskarekar says the same: http://youtu.be/xr8N0Z4Cl0U?t=23m11s

On the contrary I believe, suppose bitcoin explodes national fiat currency as I saw a couple of guys wishing, once governments put some regulation, double booking accountting for companies who will have no incentive to avoid taxes and pay a lot later and the fact you can trace all transaction would kill any anonymity unless it remain a currency for black markets.

"which, for many of its libertarian-anarchist advocates, is the whole idea"

The politics the community built around is for me the only reason why it sucks right now, the idea is interesting and it can certainly have some use. Selling all that I have.

TL;DR: Well, the link speaks for itself: http://imgur.com/r/cringepics/gkLJswu

EDIT: Ultimately what I hate about it is that the almost anywhere you go do discuss it there's this tribal mentality of believers vs. deniers. What about those guys in 2009 that thought it was a good idea to work as a currency and does not care about libertarianism/keynesianism talk?

I would not call it a ponzi scheme because the idea of cryptocurrency does not entail any return, it is more like a seigniorage.

Some of these cryptocurrencies appeared in 2011, if I'm not wrong, in the middle of the first bitcoin price hike but they proposed different algorithms to generate coins, so I do not know if we can attribute their design to malice.

My main problem with it all is that users from these currencies built an identity around them, which mixes politics, ideology and hoarding of this currencies.

I think there's too much wishful thinking in your analysis, first people that are really rich are only interested in two things, one is that their wealth do not lose value, they will go to bitcoin, private equity, platinum, dollars, North Korean wons, stocks, fixed income titles, futures, whatever only to have this as a guarantee. The second is to increase their wealth.

Now your post appears to talk about the first point, which I agree, I only do not see how you jump to the conclusion that bitcoin is more stable than Swiss francs for example, stability is the guarantee that you'll not lose money if you trade all your wealth from one state to another, I do not see how bitcoin guarantees that (no store of value does), the only real alternative to not lose value is diversification, put your money in as many different things as you possibly could, never let a bank have more than 20% of your entire cash money, buy as many different investments as you could, precious metals, stocks, solid bonds and let them be on safes or clearing houses that's not attached to a bank.

And most important stay away from banks from countries with large public debt.

To build a comparison of price indexes you have to have an exchange rate and products that are sold on two markets that use the two currencies separately, there's no Big Mac sold by BTC as far as I know, as such you have to find products that are sold in the market using the two currencies.

I can think of pot, and using silk road to build the index for BTC but as I see its prices are pegged to dollar and BTC is only used to maintain some anonymity of the transactions.

I'm not sure that if that's what you wanted.

It's called mark to maket accounting, for example suppose I have 2 Bitcoin and will like to know what is their value, I see the market price and multiply by what I have, like you said.

This is why people say that the current amount of bitcoin multiplied by their value makes more than $1 billion dollars.

EDIT: Of course, you can't sell it all by the current market price since supply will be then much higher than demand and price will go down
