Registering already seems daunting but it's nothing compared to what comes after - payroll, health insurers, taxes, dealing with import duties, various registrations, fax, constant cold sweat from missing important snail mail. The admin ordeal intensifies with unexpected twists and turns. Ask me in a few years if it was worth it.

What an incredible article, conveying the excitement and passion for a niche subject so well and clearly even for the uninitiated. It's so rare these days. Much to learn about writing here too.

Actix Web 3.0 6 years ago

I've just started to rewrite my NodeJS-based prototype API using Actix.

In September 2020, somehow this all feels so dated and irrelevant, including talking about it here on Hacker News. The whole culture is past its zenith, ready to be processed and filed away.

Thanks! It works through DNS — you point your domain’s nameservers to Songsling, then it manages all the other necessary records automatically behind the scenes. Basically it points the domain at the generated site. It’s still early, rough around the edges, but slowly getting there. The new audio engine that’s in the works is on a whole another level, focusing mostly on that at the moment.

What a hero — love how the story of Pinboard stacks up against the long-term unsustainability of VC-funded and overhyped startups. Quote from the 2011 article[0]:

"My dream is to keep this a one-person project," says Ceglowski. "I am competing against billionaires like the YouTube guys running Delicious and I can hold my own. The tools I use have gotten so good and they are the same ones that Yahoo and Google use."

I hope to do the same one day with Soundcloud!

Note that this is all applies only to easy listening music suitable for the background (I checked the author's playlist at the end). Not something emotionally intense or overly energetic that demands your full attention. Spotify is optimizing for muzak, and artists who thrive in this ecosystem are muzak.

I could (and soon will) go deeper to prove my point, but Liz Pelly already did a lion-hearted job covering the problems with streaming platforms and Spotify specifically — they have a catastrophic effect on music.[1]

Spotify is the No. 1 enemy of music culture and artistic expression.

That's awesome, but I really want to see lightning fast response times and TTFB... Second pain point is the number of retries needed for uploading a large batch of small files. Those are the main reasons I'm still considering migrating away. I really wish I shouldn't as otherwise I love the pricing and the philosophy.

Edit: also think DigitalOcean Spaces and B2 might be better off merging together, or Spaces being a whitelabel B2 in disguise (both are part of BWA).
