Thanks for the link! This is so great so actually see how the line camera and this line screen work together to create an ad in the finish line photo.

First I was wondering why there are ad banners visible in the image. With a line scan camera the background which is standing still should actually only have horizontal stripes.
But since the company Omega produced this photo it actually makes sense to artificially add their logo next to the Olympic rings.
Oversharing at the family dinner is something I didn't encounter yet. In contrast having a mobile phone always available oftentimes leads to no conversation at all.
My wife and me are very strict with not touching our phone at during meals with our kids. But the grandparents are the total opposite. They use their phones during meals all the time, killing most conversations with their absence.
I think that the coming generation will be even more mindful in their usage of a phone during real life conversations. At least I hope so.
The guy in the story basically survived 6 days without water and traveled up to 160 miles during that time. It's almost unbelievable. I thought that once you loose 4-6 kg of water due to sweat the body does not function any more due to the changed concentration of minerals in the cells.
I enjoy writing. It's the work I like most. The best moment is finishing a piece. The most regular piece I write is a monthly retrospective. I write about topics that I encountered at work. Mostly in a personal style also reflecting on my thoughts about different topics. To keep me accountable I sent this retrospective to a few colleagues each month at the last day of the month.
I like how the name quest emphasizes the process, not the initially desired outcome. When you go on a quest you gain experience and have encounters that might even change your initially desired outcome. Instead of trying to reach an outcome you enjoy an adventure and change the human you are.
A quest is a journey where the final destination is not clear in the beginning. But if you are successful, you will be a better version of yourself on the other side of the journey.
Your answer resonates with me a lot. Disclosure: I'm not a founder, I'm still employed.
A very important insight for achieving my peace of mind was to have multiple sources for a feeling of accomplishment. Peace of mind is the state where I'm feeling fine and not lonely or bad. My sources are: Family and friends, physical activity and work. If one of the sources temporarily is running dry, I still have two other ones to rely on.
My sources are very parallel to the activities you picked up in order to counter your loneliness.
Considering the lifetime emissions of a product makes an interesting point. Seeing that an electric cargo bike only has more than 10x the emissions per kilometer than a steel bike was unexpected for me.
It's easy to forget how expensive the manufacturing of the electric engine and the battery is.
Since she made her method public I wonder if this will still work now. But apart from that it is a simple solution for a tricky problem.
My schedule in the past years was not linked to daylight at all. But that changed recently. I have a new window where the first sunlight in the morning now enters the room.
Since I have that window I'm very aware of the time the sun rises every day and how that time shifts a few minutes every day. At least in the location where I life. (South of Germany)
These pictures are a flashback to my youth. Back in the time the limiting factor of how many friends could join the LAN Party where the switches. I remember the time a friend of mine bought a 12 port switch. That opened up a whole new level of gaming. With 12 friends now being cramed in a room.
An of course. Every LAN Party went on for the whole night.
The problem with too many layers of management is mainly that they stop doing what they should do. Making decisions.
The lowest management layer cannot make any decisions alone, otherwise the next layer would have no reason to exist. The next layer might even have to hand over the decision to one layer above. Up there no one really understands the decision that needs to be made because they are too far away from the actual impact. The result is that the decision is not made at all. Instead they procrastinate by asking for more details about the decision and the options.
If you have only one layer you get a decision very fast.
This is the first time I saw book in the form of a webpage. I really like it. Problem is that my children are don't speak English yet. I wonder if those storybooks also exist in other languages.
Now I know why the cursor from the old asteroids game looks like the position indicator in my car navigation. Great fun fact!
The Atari Team which created the game was located next to the company that built the first navigation device.
During the last centuries there was a technological shift in cargo ship drives roughly every 100 years. From sailing to steam boat over combustion engines to these drives?
There is always a tradeoff between different types of use cases. Some users solve problem A with the sofware. An other group solves problem B. Using the same software in both cases leads to edge cases that are bugs for one group but cannot be fixed without introducing bugs for the second group.
The clear specification really is the solution to resolve this issue. That you don't declare behavior as buggy that is according to specification.
In general you are on the right track. One more thing you could do is align the priorities of stakeholders and keep them aligned for as long as possible. The thing that causes most problems in my team are the changes of priority on short notice. This causes a lot of unfinished work.
The reasons for these priority changes are to some degree our fault. We did not clarify our roadmap with all stakeholders involved. This lead to more powerful stakeholders adding features with more priority to our roadmap after we already started with the development of other features.
Looks great and worked ok for my condition. It was able to list all common causes for my symptoms. Interestingly it did not mention the rare, severe root causes in the first place. I think that is a feature not a bug.
Side Note: The languages on the landing page are mixed up if you have German as a standard in the browser settings. Some buttons are already translated, some are still in English.
This really sounds too good to be true. I understand why the locals are sceptic at first. If they achieve their goal of creating a national park with 200.000 square hectares they have covered 3% of the Romanian forests. That is impressive.
Only a handful of minutes from a position in space where you can see the whole earth to a small spot in the desert of Utah. Where you see the feet of a human walking towards you.
Amazing what is achievable with the tech of today. Space is not that far away after all. Still very odd to see the two scenes described above in a short video on YouTube.
Having the human walk towards the camera has a tremendous effect. It's something everyone can relate to and it puts a great context to all the scenes that are shown in the video before that.
I also struggle with understanding the image. It starts out as a flow chart depicting the conversion funnel. In the end it somehow is a state diagramm of the feeling of the creator. I get the points that are spelled out in the text, but the image is a mistery for me.
Most of the things that made up the internet in 2014 were created in the second half of the internets lifespan at that point in time. Assuming that this trend continues, most of the things people will use in 2044 still have to be invented. You don't now what the new things will be. But looking back we notice that a lot of things came into our lifes recently.
We are so used to these big innovations that it feels like they have always been there.
The article briefly mentions the possibility to access secrets on a hardware level by monitoring the ressources of other threads. I have no idea if this is only possible in theory but completely impractical becauste it takes so much effort. Have there been attacks like that in the past?
I have hired or been close to 4 hires of IT consultants so far. Every time the process was very simple:
1. Do we know a company that offers that service?
2. If yes: Hire them.
3. If no: Don't hire.
Of course this is maybe a little bit oversimplified but at least in the cases I witnessed there was no big selection process of multiple different consulting services. In smaller companies the personal connection is much more important than the best offer on paper.
I wonder if the company will survive this. If the really have to recall all their bikes and refund their customers they will have a big problem. I own one of those bikes as well. I'm not sure what I should do.
Yes!
I try to have a bias towards action.
1. Actively organize events for friends and family.
2. Go out and explore new cities, places, museums.
3. Always make sure that you have an activity coming up in the next few weeks that you are really looking forward to. If you don't have such an activity in the moment, schedule one.
Thanks for sharing that story. If something feels easy that actually should feel hard is a good signal that you found a sweet spot. Enjoy the feeling as long as you can, it will inevitably be hard again soon.
My analogy for this is endurance sports. Sometimes you get a runners high and you cover a lot of distance with a feeling of very low effort, but sooner or later the going will get tough again.
Before I visited HN today I read the whole blog post. I was notified by an email from mtlynch in my inbox. I draw a lot of inspiration from the consistency he has in writing the monthly and yearly retrospectives. Keep up the great work!
Main takeaway from the article and the highly rated comments:
Don't use selfmanaged k8s.
This is only a minor invest compared to the financial support they provide for the students already. I tried to google the exact amount of funding they get. The best I came up with is a 8890 USD loan per year where 40% of it will be converted to a grant once they receive their degree.
