A couple of rules I have that have worked for me so far is:

Colleagues, tasks, compensation - if at least two of the three are good, it's fine to stay. If not it's time to look for something new.

The first year is a learning year, the second is a productive year, and the third is a "what else can I get out of this place" year. If nothing changes in the third year, then there's not much more to learn from the company and it's maybe time to move on.

12+ years experience as a software engineer in small but growing companies, working on medical research, web applications, and data analysis. The last years I've been building pipelines for data scientists and bioinformaticians, with a focus on automation, data quality and reproducability. I'm interested in continuing down this path of working with (data) scientists, but open for suggestions. Send me an email, and let's chat!

I've been happily using Instapaper for this for many years. I add interesting articles to it from all over and then read and highlight in the app/web app right away or later. If I read an article directly, I still tend to add it to Instapaper to keep track of it, espesially if I found it interesting.

Your app looks great! I'm hacking on something related, so always fun to see new takes in this space. Did you try Instapaper as an alternative to Pocket? No intrusive features, great reading experience. I'm a happy paying customer and user for over a decade now.

I found this blog post [1] on twitter where people were looking for literature on "office politics". It has some good points:

Instead, I think of them in terms of what the modern corporate structure has done to them: Broken the losers, tricked the clueless, and forced the sociopaths into ethical conundrums.

To be specific, I propose that we name the losers, clueless and sociopaths to “pragmatists, idealists and opportunists.” Their roles, relationships and dynamics remain the same ...

The book Peopleware had a nice description of cubicles:

"Today’s modular cubicle is a masterpiece of compromise: It gives you no meaningful privacy and yet still manages to make you feel isolated. You are poorly protected from noise and disruption; indeed in some cases, sources of noise and disruption are actively piped into your space. You’re isolated because that small lonely space excludes everyone but you (it’s kind of a toilet stall without a toilet). The space makes it difficult to work alone and almost impossible to participate in the social unit that might form around your work."

Though if you get a new job during the period the non-compete is valid, the amount can be reduced down to 50%, depending on your income. The company also can't enforce the non-compete if they fire you. The Norwegian way of handling this is good, I think.

Another happy UHK owner here.

I got the UHK since I was suffering from an increasingly troublesome shoulder impingement syndrome after working on laptop for years. The UHK was the best split keyboard alternative I could find which didn't require too much change from the laptop keyboard. Getting the keyboard and raising the laptop screen with a nice stand fixed my posture and the shoulder problems have been reduced a lot (together with physical training).

Now I'm feeling discomfort in my back/neck if I have to work on my laptop for a few hours, and I don't see myself going back to a non-split keyboard. Adding a vertical mouse to the mix has also been an ergonomical improvement for me.

Like the parent comment, I don't miss the arrow keys since navigation is quicker with the mod layer. I also use the Fn layer for controlling spotify many times per day. The agent software shipped with the keyboard is also great for customization, you can see how it works online here: https://ultimatehackingkeyboard.github.io/agent/

Disclaimer: I'm just a happy customer. The UHK is also the first enthusiast keyboard I've tried, so I don't know how it compare to others. I'd like to try the other types of layouts (like the columnar layout of the Moonlander), but it's hard to "risk" paying the price + shipment cost for those in case I don't like it, and living in the EU I need the ISO layout.

Thanks for sharing, this editor has quite a few nice features! Using @ for quickly inserting different markdown formattings is a nice touch compared to having to remember them.

Beside the benefit that black removes any discussion regarding formatting, my favourite benefit otherwise is the speed-up it yields by having it run everytime I save a file. I don't have to care about line lengths or single/double quotes or stuff like that anymore, since black will fix it for me anyway. And if black fails to trigger, it means there is something wrong with my code somewhere.

This is what I've stuffed in my VS code settings:

    "python.formatting.provider": "black",
    "editor.formatOnSave": true,

I worked in a warehouse once, emptying containers full of boxes. We were paid by "container hours", so if we emptied a 4 hour container in 2 hours, we got double salary. That was a good motivation to work fast.
