Quantum physics has always bothered me, personally, since I find it difficult to understand reasons. Not philosophical reasons, I am fine with axioms and foundations to models, but rather intuitive reasons why it works a certain way. I know it is an extremely strong theory which makes unexpected, later confirmed, predictions, but there is a frustration that the only explanation to things is "math".

I am reading this as "it has to be this way, or the model does not hold", but it does not explain why. What causes it? Consistency of a model cannot be the ultimate reason, right?

This is probably politically incorrect, but there was always a path to end crime, just like there was and is a path to end slavery and collective punishment. That path is kindness: get a job, don't feel the urge to commit a crime, avoid prison to be sure you live a good life, and abstain from crime if you are poor. Crime continue to exist because selfish people put selfish needs ahead of sociology and human rights. People refuse to change their behavior, and, because (not "so long as") they refuse, there will be no end to crime of any sort. Sure, there are edge cases of accidental theft or something else non-criminal, but the vast bulk of cases are from irresponsible criminal behavior.

I think it makes sense. To me there is a clear difference between chair and sheet, where chair starts with the sound of a t. Same thing with Ч.

It's cheaper to raise kids since you would already have paid the cost in taxes if you didn't get kids. The important metric is the difference in cost of having kids vs not having kids, and since daycare is heavily subsidized, the difference is small.

Same things go for schools, food in schools, universities, et.c., they are all "free", as in paid for by everyone in proportion to their wealth, instead of individually by the parent.

On a slightly related note, whenever I see a generated face with other faces in the background, and those faces are warped in strange ways, I get a very unpleasant sensation, like a chill going up my spine. Does anyone else get this?

That's interesting - I have subtitles on at all times (I am Swedish, we never dub adult content so I have used subtitles for a very long time), but when I do watch children's movies with my kids, they are dubbed, and then I find having subtitles on is extremely annoying.

I cannot stand having subtitles in the same language as the dialogue, but which differs in phrasing/content. It is very distracting to me.

I liked this because it uses a method to prove something which seems very disconnected from the initial problem.

It also works if you are more than one. Me and my wife have used it for several years now to sync shopping lists between us, to great effect.

In Sweden, prostitution is illegal, but not selling sex. Instead, the buyer is the one breaking the law. I think this makes more sense, because the prostitutes will not need to fear reaching out for help to get out of the situation.

Reading things like this gives me chills. The idea that we as a species, and especially our lives as individuals, are such tiny specs in the timeline of the universe is obviously true but feels emotionally absurd.

I find this comparison strange. Yes, a restaurant should not be allowed to not serve Jews. But they should be allowed to not serve _a_ Jew, if the Jew in question breaks their rule of conduct. Like the case with Trump and Twitter.

I don't think anyone expects the Nordic model to be free. Higher taxes in exchange for the associated benefits is what has been decided by the government, elected by the people. Of course there will be people against it, as well as people for it.

Not only risk aversion - they were really early in digitizing their baseline services, so many of them have quite old mainframes by now. It's difficult, expensive, and, as you said, risky, to change old code that the whole organization is operating against.
