I haven't done any graphics programming in years, but I thought you'd want to keep the number of draw calls down, do you need to cluster these triangles into fewer draw calls?

GPUs draw can draw 10,000's of vertices per draw call, whether they are connected together into logical objects or are "triangle soup" like this. There is some benefit to having triangles connected together so they can "share" a vertex, but not as much as you might think. Since GPUs are massively parallel, it does not matter much where on the screen or where in the buffer your data is.

Is there any work being done to optimize a volumetric representation of scenes and from that create a set of surfaces with realistic looking shaders or similar?

This is basically where the field was going until nerfs and splats. But then nerfs and splats were such HUGE steps in fidelity, it inspired a ton of new research towards it, and I think rightfully so! Truth is that reality is really messy, so trying to reconstruct logically separated meshes for everything you see is a very hard way to try to recreate reality. Nerfs and splats recreate reality much easier.

We did the exact same thing! This one time, me and my group of similarly nerdy friends sat in a different room and opened all of the CD-trays in the computer lab during a computer class. The teacher came running to the room we sat in, and we were so sure we had been caught. But no, she started explaining that all the computers were acting up horribly, and that we were the only ones who could help her. She didn't know how right she was :)

So we helped her naturally, undoing our own work and uninstalling NetBus. I'm not sure she ever figured out it was us, though.

They DID figure out who was spamming "net send" messages to certain people. A kind of war had started, where people would compete in sending the most net sends to each other, forcing the other side to click "OK" on a message box. It got sort of nuclear once we discovered batch scripts and for loops.

It's actually harder than it seems to cut off the ceiling, houses may have all sorts of weird heights, angles and corners, doors, arches... Any simple solution might work for 80-90% of models, but our viewer has to work for 100%. So we only remove faces with backface culling currently, we're going to do better soon though :)

Hey, dev here, thanks for not giving up on the first try :) WebGL is still pretty new, so it has some quirks.. but you seemed to be particularly unlucky. Does WebGL usually work on your W7/FF33 setup? (does http://get.webgl.org/ work?) As for the W8.1/FF33 case, does it work if you try again, or is it still the same?

The dollhouse view is actually a low detail version of the 3d model, with low resolution textures, it's just really not meant for a close inspection :) Load time and performance has been high priority for us, particularly because we also support mobile devices. We might do something like streaming in higher quality mesh/textures in the future, and allow closer inspection.

As for VR... we're playing around with it a whole lot, and it actually looks really great! Hopefully it'll get in front of more people somehow soon.

You can call it photogrammetry, it uses both 2d imagery and 3d depth data from depth sensors (think Microsoft Kinect or Google Tango) to make the 3d model. The viewer limits your movement when you are inside to be able to project panorama images onto the model, so you get the image quality of 2d images while you're still in a 3d model. 3d scanning tech just isn't good enough yet that you would be happy with how it looked up close if you are trying to sell a house, for instance.

Don't know Photoscan or 123D catch enough to comment spesifically, but in general many other 3d companies focus on scanning small objects or features, while we do large buildings/indoor spaces/rooms better (faster/better quality/cheaper/more convenient) than anyone else I've seen :)

Don't worry about it. As long as you started using it before them, there's really nothing Rdio can do to screw you, and I don't think there's much risk of confusion. And it's not like everyone are using Rdio anyway.

Focus on your own product, make it awesome! Don't spend time trying to find/worry about all the things that could possibly make you fail :)

That's quite weird. It would be really awesome if you could open your developer console when this happens (cmd + alt + j) and then copy what it says and send it to bugs@skycraft.io :)

Hum.. it seems your antivirus might react to Skycraft using a lot of memory, which it seems to associate with a certain exploit. What browser are you using?

Voxel.js is great! But it didn't exist when I started, (so it wasn't really re-inventing the wheel at that time) and it lacks some of the things which I have spent the most time tuning and getting right, like lighting and ambient occlusion. The lack of these features is also part of why voxeljs has better performance at the moment.

I contemplated changing to voxeljs when it came out, but Skycraft has some properties that might not fit properly into a generic voxel engine.. the islands, for instance, allow for some unique optimizations. And the small, one-color blocks allow for other optimization again. So it wouldn't be easy to make Skycraft work with voxeljs, or use the optimizations of Skycraft in voxel.js.

Thanks for taking a screenshot; I'm only on a 1680x1050 22", so I really have no good way of testing large resolutions! :) What's your resolution? Is it any better now, care to take a new screenshot? (Proxy debugging/designing through HN ftw)

Nightly builds are quite scary.. using as much new APIs as Skycraft does, there's always a big chance that a small change breaks something. Does it work in stable Firefox for you?
