How is it any more of an opinion to "mark" a website as "unsafe" than say, "contains CSAM"?

The article has IMO two flawed arguments:

1. There is math for how long it takes to send even one packet over satellite connection (~1600ms). Its a weak argument for the 14kb rule since there is no comparison with a larger website. 10 packets wont necessarily take 16 seconds.

2. There is a mention that images on webpage are included in this 14kb rule. In what case are images inlined to a page’s initial load? If this is a special case and 99.9% of images don’t follow it, it should be mentioned at very least.

There is an example link in the article. Listing more examples would serve no purpose apart from web design perspective

Optical zoom changes significantly how out-of-focus areas looks like. For anyone doing photography (with actual cameras and actual lenses), calling crop an "optical zoom" is a lie from Apple.

Am I the only one who is upset about this ”replace every button with obscure icon without label” trend? Seems that Google and Facebook are the main culprits of this. Every year it gets more disgusting when I unwillingly have to use their services.

I jumped straight to comparison (as it’s listed first) and was let down because the comparison seemed borderline deceiving. The other examples had hundreds of lines of logic and types for example.

I play fps shooter (Overwatch 2) weekly at minimum. I’m far from being ”pro”, advanced hobbyist rather. When Windows spontaneously decides to reset refresh rate back to 60, I’ll notice it the second I aim by flicking my mouse. In addition to strobe-effect of low fps, the increased input lag in mouse controls is absolutely noticeable and really messes my aim. So no need to be pro to enjoy (and notice) increased responsiveness in fps games as long as you’ll clock a few hours weekly to it!

Well that was the gist of the comment, right? You can say it subtly but the point and innuendo remains the same.

I’m not personally offended but admittedly tired of reading this same stuff every week. Maybe I should read less comments, though, as HN is starting to feel like a groundhog week. Luckily not on the same level as Reddit yet.

For every web-related HN post there’s always that one person who keeps reminding how it was all better 15 years ago and how you actually dont need any colours on web since they are so irritating.

Tired of hearing this pointless rant every time. Especially since this portfolio is something fresh and not just a cookie cutter WP theme with annoying animations. Web itself can be art or culture or whatever, if it takes 10 seconds to realize how to use it on your phone then big fucking deal. CURL is handy for reading web content I’ve heard, keeps you safe from unpleasant surprises

The vsync latency is real and unbearable in some games. I think it uses a queue/buffer for frames which can cause latencies of multiple frames.

From the perspective of someone who unfortunately deals with FB Business manager, their palette of services has become such an incoherent and buggy mess that it sure feels like they have totally lost control of their products and infra. Just two most recent issues I found last week:

- Removing a paypal account and adding another one is not reflected when creating a new ad - the old one is still there and new is nowhere to be see . Upon using the old one, ad got accepted normally but it wasn’t shown to any user. No error messages or anything. The ad went to some limbo state where it couldn’t be removed, edited or paused from the ads manager, but curiously could be deleted from mobile instagram app.

- Reels (a feature > 1yr old) can not be advertised from desktop dashboard, only from mobile instagram app. The reels or their statistics are not visible at all in business.facebook.com.

Stuff like this shouldn’t happen on any production service.

Oh and another fun one was an ad published after my client had a fundraiser for NGO aiding children in Ukraine. Results for the ad (it didnt relate to the fundraiser) showed ~15k clicks and 0 completed goals. Statistics happily stated that 99.9% of the budget was used by android users in Ukraine. Audience was all EU countries. Somehow it seemed a bit suspicious to me, but not to FB. Raising an issue about the results to FB is as useful as complaining about them to my dog.

Why is exporting fuel from another continent in any way better than producing the same kind of fuel in EU? Other than said policy loopholes

Another example of positive discrimination. I find it absurd that skin color has anything to do with businesses’ quality. Could be that I’m just living in a Finnish bubble where I haven’t seen racism in ages.

Don’t know if I’m in minority but I couldn’t care less about these Google provided services.

I have no reason to bookmark pages between devices - different devices for different purposes. I don’t need my work bookmarks on my gaming computer.

For posting random comments to social media I don’t need spell checking either. If grammar needs to be spot on, I use Word etc.

According to the hacker (messages with tripcode on TOR imageboard) the DB was using a public IP and he gained access with root:root credentials.

The initial post and data dump was on a Finnish TOR-based imageboard but it was written in English. It is still being discussed if the hacker actually is from Finland but uses English to not reveal that.

Most Finnish people are fluent in English so it wasn't an issue. The leak was in Finnish mainstream media before the Finnish extortion mails were even sent. When the mails were sent, all hell went loose.
