Even when you cause an accident, you don't pay. Your insurance company does. You might "pay" with increased future insurance rates.

The way I understand auto insurance is, you're always liable for the damage caused, assuming you're at fault. You have a contract with the insurance carrier to transfer the liability from you to the insurance company for a specific damage amount and causes.

So what exactly does it mean that Mercedes "assumes liability"?

You have a contract to transfer liability in when the system is active, similar to the contract you have with your insurance.

Are they going to reimburse insurance company?

That is possible, it is also possible Mercedes will pay first.

WiFi and LTE are too power intensive for a pet tracker in my opinion. Something like LoRaWAN would be ideal. In urban areas public LoRaWAN coverage already exists and where it doesn't the coverage of one gateway would likely be far greater than a cat's roaming range. Bandwidth shouldn't be an issue either as a GPS point (without elevation) would easily fit inside the smallest LoRa packet.

You'd be able to do the switch over from low frequency check-ins to high frequency with the RX slot that comes after a TX slot, but the only issue would be having to wait for a check-in before the realtime mode is activated. But with a sufficient, ~5 minute, low-frequency check-in period, I'd imagine that's a small inconvenience.

At least when I was in high school, the regular, pre-AP and the AP classes each had a different grade scale. Core classes were a 1.0(70%)-4.0(100%), pre-AP were +1 (1-5) and AP were +2 (2-6). So in theory they were taking into account how difficult the classes were. Since this was in the DFW area, I'd expect something similar in Dallas.

When I was in high school, IIRC we did 55 minute classes with 5 minutes between classes, 4 core classes 2 or 3 electives + lunch. It doesn't work, by time you start, the class settles, late arrivals show up, homework is collected, questions asked and whatnot, there's probably only 30 mins of real instruction. Class would boil down to either teaching or worksheets but not both.

I agree with your driver assessment as someone who's used Zephyr quite a bit. If you're working with a new sensor, writing a new one is super straightforward. I don't have much experience picking sensor devices for embedded Linux, but I didn't think they had a ton of drivers for those types of devices. Bluetooth, networking, and SoCs, sure, but not so much for I2C/SPI sensors and displays and whatnot.

Not OP, but for me, it's the isolation. I wouldn't quite call it miserable unless I can't go out. I lasted only a few days into WFH for COVID before I went to live with my parents until I was forced back to the office. Just a few weeks ago I was snowed in for a week and I was about to crawl up the walls.

While this is highly unsurprising, I'm curious what information Twitter will have to provide in discovery.

It seems Musk torpedoed the deal off the number of bots on the platform. It also appeared that Twitter didn't have a number or didn't want to disclose it publicly. To me, it will be super interesting to see if we ever get a real answer on the bot rate.

This sort of thing is so frustrating to me.

They phish users with horribly made emails with no formatting, then they send the same sort of emails for legitimate things. They give security advice and then break their own security advice.

Unless you’re a government (or contractor) your threat model isn’t some side channel timing attack on your CPU, its users complacent with security created by you. Legitimate emails should look legitimate the first time, security advice applies always and everywhere. It’s not that hard.

This take is baffling to me. While I don't necessarily agree with Apple's decision to take the charger out and change to USB-C at the same time, this is an awful take. First of all there's a million and 1 USB-C chargers from many different manufactures. Second, USB-A to C adapters exist. Third, there are 3rd party manufacturers of USB-A to Lightning cables.

I'm confused how anyone could believe Apple is the exclusive manufacturer of anything required for an IPhone but the phone.

X86 and by extension x64 is weird for reasons even beyond what he talks about.

One weirdness I've hated is the layout of interrupt and segment descriptors. For interrupts the address is broken into a lower and upper half on either end of the structure, not ideal but workable. Segments on the other has 3 different places for the base and 2 different places for the 2.5 byte limit.

It's insanity to try and build the descriptors.

I agree that Apple not bringing iMessage to Android is lock in and very purposeful. But I don't think (at least not initially) it's because it works better than plain old SMS. I think there is quite a bit of social pressure to have "the blue bubble" especially in middle/high school.

Most of the iMessage features, text, video, pictures and "reactions/tap backs" work over SMS. The only real feature missing is delivery and read receipts but most people in my experience have read receipts turned off. Apps also don't work but I've yet to see someone actually use that feature.

Maybe Apple can straitjacket them properly. "You must use XYZ API in iOS/MacOS and you must support one-click cancellation via a standard process." But I think the dark-pattern farmers who are angry about this would be angry about that, too.

Im not sure Apple want's to do that. By not restricting the 3rd party payments there is more of a case for using Apple's payment processor so you can cancel easier.

This doesn't work for everyone. When I put one up, I had to get a $100 directional antenna, a signal booster and mount it in the attic. Even then we had difficulty picking up some stations. Granted our neighborhood is in a big region, a good ways out and in a large depression.

Really? Which leaders? Haven't almost all countries affected by Covid reopened most of the way before the number of new infections reached zero? I don't think zero covid had any impact beyond being a talking piece. And how does widespread immunity figure in? Zero covid (and "no covid", another different but related proposal which they conflate) came up in Dec 2020/Jan 2021, when no place on Earth had anything like widespread immunity even in sight.

I believe Australia is taking this approach.
