I don't buy Apple computers but isn't that a main selling point with osx?

I agree with you. My current life style ends up around $7,000 a year. I live in a very affluent mid-east city. I don't own a car (15 minute walk to downtown), I don't eat out constantly (I prefer healthy meals), and I don't buy a bunch of luxury junk. I can honestly say that I do not feel like I'm struggling at all.
Having the 'standard' car, house, and family are unnecessary luxuries. It's fine if you choose to do these things but it's silly to me that people feel poor making 50k+. I would argue that if you are struggling with those types of income, your lifestyle is severely out of whack. You don't have to keep up the Jonses to lead a very happy, healthy life.
The benefits of living cheaply are pretty obvious and already pretty well covered. The ability to work on whatever I want, whenever I want all without ever having to think about the personal finance side of it, is just incredibly freeing.
Straight from the HN Guidelines: "If your account is less than a year old, please don't submit comments saying that HN is turning into Reddit. It's a common semi-noob illusion, as old as the hills."
A lot of the posts here end up on Reddit and vice versa. Big part of this I suspect is due to the fact that most people here use both sites pretty regularly, I surely do.
I only skimmed the article but the discussion on how police body cam footage is released should be had.
On the one hand, I would like the footage to be fully released but what about instances similar to people being swatted[0]? Surly there should be limits in place but can we really trust police to be ethical?
Hopefully more people comment but surely there will be more of these types of articles written in the future as body cams continue to roll out.
And while meditation is good for practicing mindfulness "in slow motion", you don't _need_ to meditate to be mindful.
Yes!! If you wake up and just don't feel like meditating that day, then don't! I view meditation as a tool that helps you reach deep into mindfulness, but meditating to meditate is missing the point. The goal you should have is to be mindful/present in the moment throughout the day.
I love skeleton and use it almost exclusively. Most of the classes are simple and you can easily overwrite stuff to make the design unique.
It's an interesting question and I've wondered the same thing. winRAR is a piece of nagware that works great but has a reputation of people not ever buying it. I've seen phrases like "what?! you've actually bought winRAR" many times online. On the other hand, Sublime Text seems to have the opposite with lots of people proudly exclaiming they've purchased it. Without knowing actual numbers it's impossible to tell but there is some culture at play here.
The type of software probably plays a role as well. Sublime text is heavily used throughout the day but I can go weeks without needing winRAR.
I have a short write-up here: https://thepsychonautexplorer.com/minimizing-distractions-an...
But the tl;dr is setting productive defaults and actively not clicking on links you know are unproductive and stupid.
I honestly find that it can be difficult to limit time wastage because the dumb/completely useless sites can give awesome ideas or inspiration.. and it's only that one click away!
Some here are saying change host files or block sites but have any of you actually tried to do this for a good length of time? I just end up routing around my own blocks and ending right back on Reddit.
I agree, gotta get those views though right?
Highly depends on your own personal preference and how you'll be using the keyboard. Check out http://www.reddit.com/r/MechanicalKeyboards/ It's a great subreddit and the users are super passionate, it contains anything you would want to know about the different brands and switch type.
You should try a mini, while not super low like on a laptop it is a lot lower than on the behemoth that is an IBM board.
My big beef with the Mac keyboards is the spacing. I can get around 60 wpm on a Macbook and 110-120 (touch typing both) on my desktop board. It's just super hard to use one when each key is so much farther than what you get accustomed to on a large mechanical board.
I do this and the biggest reason is to avoid mis-typing and hitting a phishing site.
This is happening in some areas and it's a trend I hope will continue. For example, my hometown mall was dead (~3-4 open shops out of ~50 available) for the better part of the last decade but management has recently started renting out most of space to local colleges and other non-commercial entities.
This is a good idea, it can provide "proof" that your service works as well as pay for it.
I would be more than happy to donate back if it truly helped me land a job.

I'm looking for web work. I prefer back-end but have worked on the entire stack.
Slightly off-topic but I've been to a few meetups hosted at the Ann Arbor office and have really enjoyed them! It's always great to see companies contribute to the development scene, thanks!
