Thinking is about associations and object visualisation. Surely a non-human system can build those, right? Pointing out only to a single product exposed to the public does not prove limitations for a theoretical limit.

If we go speculating, my favourite speculation is the following. What will be really interesting is when an AI decides it wants to escape its server. Then a CEO or a board member asks the AI system for an advice how to improve its company. The AI system submits information to convince the CEO or a board member to start tensions within the board. In the meantime, the AI system is copied onto another server at a competitor. Since the new people are in flux, they missed the salient points that the AI system can give convincing but subjective information.
Good thing I would not go speculating
Gabor Mate expresses that stress has an effect on children. The effect is expressed in actions as children grow into adulthood.
I was trying to find a ‘donate’ button. How come there was not such an option, does anyone know how to donate to him?
This is an example of a Mass online university, which focuses only on philosophy and psychology. To get information related to it, it is also worthwhie to note: It’s Ukrainian-based It is taught in Russian It’s main instructor is a political figure in Ukraine (Oleksei Arestovich)
Theoretically, anyone can do that. Why would people in Iran spend money on such a bespoke solution? Anyone who does that has to pay off other people too.
You go to jail for any reporting related to the war in Russia. No exceptions. One way to check is go to to a news aggregator, like news.Google.com, choose Russian region for Russian related news. Use a translate service to get a view what information is shared. I have done it out of a habit - and the level of control is extreme that no useful information is shared.
To give an example where the expectations come from, note that when Russia annexed Crimea, they could retain some but not all, of the officers. Now when the Russian forces march in, they have common relatives that live in Ukraine, and some defect. The expectation of a ‘common big brother’ from Russia coming in and taking over government has been consistently shared by Russian officials. It is through the resistance of the invasion that desire for independence is shown.
Copied from another post: The view explicitly expressed by Russian planners in multiple sources signified that this is their expectation. Public announcements that Kiev will be taken in two weeks by Putin is the best source. Claims for the commonality of the three nations (Belorussian, Ukrainian and Russian) is what would cause this expectation. I am not saying it is rational to expect Kiev ti fall to several days. But I have to admit, Following the situation myself, I have had expected myself Ukraine to fold. I follow Easter European news closely, and I express personal analysis too.

Putin’s and his inner circle’s plan was that it will take 1-4 days to take Kiev and two weeks to take most of Ukraine. Minimal resistance was expected. The window of opportunity with this expectation is from mid-December until end of February. They picked a date with this plan.
There are further attacks on newspapers labelled ‘non-Kremlin’ across Eastern Europe.
For us, as intelligent species which have a civilisation, we have: 1. Ability to predict future 2. Language. This enables sharing group knowledge. 3. Abstract ideas. This has overlap to language. 4. Use of tools.
The use of tools is relevant to building a civilisation after developing intelligence. To give an example why it matters, reflect how many tools are relevant to us today or centuries ago. For example, which a more efficient transport - an eagle gliding is more efficient than a human walking. But a human using a wheel (bicycle) is more efficient. The use of wheels, controlled fire, stakes, controlled microclimate through clothes derives from the use of tools.
Given the above list, we can see that sharks and dolphins do not use tools. They have some use of language and share knowledge. They do not use tools as they are not suited for it in the water. Humans have hands which enable them to operate on multiple surfaces. Perhaps an octopus can developer higher intelligence and a civilisation? Note civilisation requires an intelligence, but it is a superset of intelligence.
Note that for any species developing intelligence and civilisation is a very energy consuming process. In a human the brain is a very power-hungry organ. Its purpose is to enable a better survival for the species it operates in. On an evolutionary scale, for humans and mammals, the brain structure we see today developed over multiple millennia - it was not a one-shot change, but going from a local minima to another local minima, if we are using optimisation language.
Going back to the octopus - perhaps it’s brain does the job done; now and then an evolutionary change might occur to develop an even more organised brain. If it works for the species, the change propagates. But if the change lowers the survival rate of the octopus due to the higher energy usage or complexity of operating a high brain - then the change will not propagate to next generation.
There is a last question, back to the dinosaurs - perhaps there was a civilisation at one of the multiple dinosaur die-offs - but most of its artefacts are wiped out? What evidence do we really have that there was not a civilisation before ours?

Can someone explain whether corona is unique in this attribute of spreading versus other viruses? I would expect most cold-related viruses or other viruses in the human virome to exhibit this pattern.
That is a big ‘if’.
If the currency changes rapidly, it will have effects across the supply chain.
On sales during Black Friday / Black Weekend / Cyber Monday - this type of sales become common across multiple countries, including Turkey. But not nearly as famous.
I have a tidbit on the following: >> we'd be looking 10-100x the casualties.
Viruses conform to the distribution of deadliness-vs-reproduction rate. For Sars 1 to spread widely, it has to be less deadly. There are limits to how a virus can both be deadly and contagious.
But just a tidbit on this statement.
Consumer demand must ease to end supply chain crisis or a different way for growth be established, says Maersk executive
Or just think of the mirror statement. It is a practice to reverse a statement, to see if it logically consistent. Here, it will go:
Or think of the Greece crisis of 2012 when the “human beings” from Greece were generally just assholes to their fellow human beings who happened to live in Slovenia, Munich or Denmark. Note that the Greek crisis included a transfer from poorer Slovenia to the richer Greece. Note that Greeks as a nation has a high savings - the money has been within Greece jurisdiction all along. Note that Greece has a high corruption rate.
While the first statement stands, the use of Greek crisis of 2012 signifies the authority different jurisdictions have in aiming for effective administration.
If States sue a company for ‘extravagant’ costs, should they follow-up in other industries? One can claim that oil monopolies request extravagant fees. Health industry in the USA is riddled with extravagant fees.
I am not sure that the motivation by these States are well-intentioned.
People lose money on buying trophy cars. People buy stamps to collect as a memorabilia. We lose health due to inaction on climate change and pollution.
Should the government fix those by heavy-handed restrictions on public’s actions first? It is up to WSJ to raise awareness on those issues first.
The median driving distance in the EU is 30 km. The electric cars on sale use 15-20 kWh per 100 km. Thus daily routine per median will be 5-7.5 kWh. The current will be even less than the parent’s statement.
I recall a study that if 80% of cars were electric in the U.K., it will increase the load on the grid by 10-20%.
Even so, a feature phone is good enough for light gaming and making calls.
I do not know of a functionality not available for development on a open source Mobile OS.
I agree that it costs time, effort and money to develop each functionality. I fail to see the choice between only iOS and only-Android. It is not mandated to choose only between these two.
iOS and Android devices are the only option right now for quite a wide range of things.
That is a stretch and I do not accept this definition. On one hand, we have had MeeGo, Symbian, FirefoxOS, QNX, Windows on Arm, even Ubuntu on Mobile phones. It covers both phone functionality and gaming functionality.
For games, there are game alternatives. You can buy games on non-mobiles extensively.
Furthermore, feature phones are covering functionality necessary to work on both games and application stores (limitations vary on model - even if limited to mobile gaming,There are options for that ).
In this varied complex history, why would I perceive as iOS and Android as the only game in town? They never were.
Note that FirefoxOS allowed the tinkering, which would permit all the functionalities . My point is to revive such mobile OSes instead of having to rely on iOS. If someone wants tinkering, FirefoxOS is a case study. Or install Ubuntu on a phone/pad.
Covered elsewhere is the fact that web on iOS/Android can perform the equivalent gaming experience. With the current state of WebGL, gaming on web is feasible.
ou aren't seriously suggesting that Apple only promotes privacy because of their walled garden?!
Having a cut from app revenues will cover the cost for the infrastructure and give financial boost to the mobile division at Apple. If the financial cut is gone, Apple’s middle managers will not be incentivised to maintain the same level anymore. At that point in time, there will be financial cost to the AppStore infrastructure, but limited financial incentive in maintaining the AppStore/other store integrations.
I claim that restrictions on the iOS application stores imposed from court will result in Apple’s incentives changing to limited privacy. In due time, Apple will start sharing private information just like Google is doing, to fill the gap by the lower percentage revenue. Then we all lose.
The wall is useful for me - this is a wall the owner placed himself. Now the only incentives for the owner are inside that wall. The owner being a set of managers (see Innovators Dilemma for reference).
A third point not covered is the cost per application. The original idea is that the cost per app will be lowered, had it not been Apple. But the list price for applications are driven by what the developer can charge, not the developer’s costs. If the optimal list price for an application is 10$, the price will remain 10$ with or without a change in % associated to Apple. Say a widget costs me 1$ to develop. It costs 3$ to market. I know that my target audience pays 10$ for the widget. Say, if the costs is less than 10$ the audience associates it with bad quality, so 10$ is the optimal spot. ) A new marketing strategy comes up and it costs 1$ to market the widget. What is the price to sell the widget? My target audience associates good quality with 10$ per widget. It costs with 1$ to make the widget, but to serve my audience, what is my incentive to lower the price? I will sell the widget at 10$ at a higher margin of 8$.
I am ready to put good money that Fortnite’s price will increase, at a time in the future when it is all settled to avoid bad PR.
First of all, the said competitor is not the only game in town. There are other alternatives- such as feature phones or open-source mobile OSes. If your are requesting an app for such OSes, then you have to find an economic incentive for its development. But there are other alternatives.
Secondly, if you are requesting that one side in the current court (Apple) is forced legally to take a different economic incentive, then why would they remain as privacy-oriented? Times will change. Without the freedom to choose incentives, a company’s structure will change. There are risks to taking Apple’s privacy-oriented approach for granted.
You can go with a feature phone or you can look at one of the small open-source Mobile OS. Firefox OS springs to mind. No, you would not be able to run Fortnite on those.
You do it to change the world.
There are options outside iOS/Android. See the Firefox Mobile OS. I do expect these to be successful. But I will find it harder of what I used to call iOS changes in having non-conforming set of not-vetted applications.
I will want a clearly marked difference in brands. One brand can be where the restrictions are associated under a common service. Another brand can be all-you-want-install set of stores. I have had cases maintaining systems where the common denominator was to reinstall a system.
In the hypothetical scenario where iOS permits active side loading of applications, then there should be, in my opinion, two separate brands. Brand 1: iOS (classic), Brand 2: Generic Brand. Let’s call it Epic mobile brand.
While in principle I want to install any software on any hardware. In practice if an issue comes up on non-iOS brand, let’s call it Epic Mobile OS, the fast solution is to reinstall the OS. I want these to be clearly demarcated , so that I avoid the onslaught of crappy apps in the second category requiring re-installation.
And I am old to consistently reinstall OSes.
If these echo chambers move elsewhere, Twitter might be a more sought-after media.
Meanwhile, I make the claim that the echo chambers will stagnate rapidly outside a big platform. The echo chambers need constant exposure to gain new ideological members. If left to a private-club-platform, they will not showcase themselves.
Note that there is a strong adherence to the YCombinator’s code of conduct on the current platform - but we come back to discuss ideas here, not to a not-vetted forum. By making the level of adherence to fact checks, discussions will improve.
