Ever since it was found out Brandon Eich contributed $1000 to Prop 8 people decided to quit using Firefox and use something else instead. Even if Eich resigned people still hate Mozilla for being gay-bashing bigots.
I have a lot of friends who tell me they won't use Firefox or anything else from Mozilla because they aren't gay friendly. I should note those friends are not technical but are political experts.
That is why people want to stick with XP/7 instead of 8.X because they don't like the Modern GUI (It was called Metro until Microsoft was sued over the name) and feel like it is a giant step backward to the 1992 MS-DOS days of AOL for DOS or the old Prodigy of everything in small Windows that you cannot even re-size or have any 'visual clues' how they work like the Desktop and Start Menu of the Classic Windows has.
For example 'visual clues' in the Classic Windows have minimize and maximize buttons and the "X" button means close. These Modern GUI Windows, where are the 'visual clues'? It breaks the way Windows is supposed to work.
You have to drag the mouse to the bottom or top right side of the screen to access the 'Charms Bar' to do stuff in it, and Windows-C as a shortcut. I tried the touchscreen and it is a nightmare trying to make the correct type of swipe. Sometimes it does things you don't want it to do.
Plus a lot of desktop apps cannot be converted to Modern GUI mode because it lacks the gadgets the desktop has to make things easier to use. The Visual Studio IDE for example has so many tool icons and toolbars that not all of it will fit in a Modern GUI screen. It would need a major rewrite of the GUI, and force all developers to relearn all of their Visual Studio skills.
Remember when Office 2007 made that Ribbon bar? It was worse than Clippy the Office Assistant type of annoying.
Many compared Modern GUI to New Coke, the Classic Version was always better. If not for Desktop mode I could not use my Windows 8.1 Pro device.
It modifies system files like the Kernel and other stuff. Files that cannot be updated after the beta expires.

I think they give you a key by registering for 90 or 180 days to evaluate it and try it out for free. Make a virtual machine in Vitualbox.
I choose Virtualbox because it has a GNU/Linux and OSX version, unlike VirtualPC so you can run virtual machines on GNU/Linux and OSX systems.
Some people like VMWare, others QEMU, and some use what Microsoft has. But Microsoft has these evaluation ISOs for free for a limited time so if one runs out, just reformat and reinstall it in a virtual machine to test it out.
I think so because Windows XP POS has support until 2019 and businesses still need to develop POS apps for their embedded POS systems. Even if the consumer XP has dropped support the POS version of XP has not yet.
Too many ATMs and POS systems that still run XP, give them until 2019 to switch to Windows 8 POS systems.

The original was very buggy and did not even support Unicode and error-ed out and crashed.
Using the #ebook hashtag it favors tweets with it in it, getting a lot of indie authors to follow her account on Twitter. She can only do 100 favorings at a time due to limits, but it seems to work. She uses favorings due to the British spelling.
You have to get a Twitter API account with the keys, install the Twitter library for Python 2.7 and fill in the foo and bar etc stuff with your special API keys, and it works.

Hi there I am 45 years old. Been out of work since 2002.
In my prime I earned $150K/year as a programmer analyst writing business software for mostly Microsoft Windows platforms. That was before the Dotcom bubble burst and the market got flooded with younger cheaper labor developers who only studied in hacker school for three months how to become a developer with no college degree and high school dropouts. They work for like $20K/year and write sloppy code with security flaws and poor quality.
I've been programming since I was 12 in 1980 learning BASIC on 8 bit microcomputers, and learning COBOL and FORTRAN on mainframes using punch cards. At first I made mistakes and failed like any other person learning how to be a programmer. I learned from my mistakes and kept getting better. Over my life I learned over 37 different programming languages on countless different platforms. But none of that matters anymore.
Many people I worked with at my age, most of them did suicide because of the stress of working or not being able to find a steady job. Those who stayed in the computer industry became software consultants and got ripped off by broker agencies and in most cases not paid for their work or even being given credit for it, some ended up homeless, others ended up disabled from the stress like me.
This industry can eat you up and spit you out.
I was able to earn money as a 'super debugger', a phrase made by Rear Admiral Grace Hopper when I heard once of her speeches on programming and debugging and how using less code is faster and better, etc. She used to carry some copper wire on her wrist as a bracelet, when they decommissioned some mainframe core memory it was wire wrapped. She would show it to young people like me to teach me that wasting code is wasting memory and resources, and that if you can do the same thing with less code, it runs faster, uses less resources, and less memory.
But nobody seems to want to take her seriously anymore, even if she is a pioneer into computer science, and had invented a lot of the tech we still use today. In her time they claimed it was not possible to have a programming language, they also claimed women could not do computer work, and she proved them wrong on both counts.
Anyway some of my friends who survived, ended up working in fast food and retail and clerk jobs, because nobody wants to hire a person over 30 these days for programming work, and even if they do it is software contracting and they get ripped off.
One of my friends Michael David Crawford who was a Senior Engineer at Apple and Drobo and other places wrote this in his email response:

My problem is that I don't understand the article. It violates everything I learned at the university I attended.
Apparently it uses a form of socialism that really isn't socialism but uses that name because they cannot think of a better one.
But I have to really ask this very important question, what does socialism have to do with hacking or startups? It is more to do with liberal politics than hacking and startups. It is almost as if Hacker News got over taken by politicians pushing political articles and agendas now.
That is part of my anger and frustration, I want to read articles about hacking and startups, not politics. Politics has ruined the STEM industry! Politics has caused 90% of startups to fail! Politics ruins almost any technical news site that I frequent. On Hacker News here, I see nothing but political themed submissions making the front page that have nothing to do with hacking or startups. Is this MSNBC now? Is this Huffington Post now? Slashdot and Cnet did the very same things, and I ended up leaving them for that. Politics ruins everything!
It makes me so sad I want to just kill myself in a shotgun suicide!

I studied economics. There is no such thing as a free lunch. You cannot make something out of nothing, that money has to come from somewhere.
Just like in physics, the laws of thermodynamics, energy and matter cannot be created nor destroyed, but converted from one form to another. Socialism is the same way, you cannot create social programs without funding them in some way. How does a government get funds? By taxation.
This article violates economics, it violates logic, it violates physics, it violates so many things on so many levels.
I am not one to just read something and automatically believe it is true. You are going to have to prove to me that it is true. Unless I see some sort of evidence, I remain a skeptic.

Not every mental illness is a chemical imbalance, it might be neurological in nature, or it could be stress based, or maybe you just need a psychotherapist and learn some coping skills?

I really love my Roku box and my Amazon Prime membership.
But it will never replace Cable TV. It might compete with it, and there are people called 'cord cutters' that dump Cable TV, U-Verse, Satellite TV etc to watch videos on the Internet.
Heck Youtube is now offering channels for a monthly fee.
I think we should call it Internet TV, because we are watching TV shows and movies over the Internet instead of Cable or Satellite.
The WWE just did this with their WWE Network for $9.99/month that has all of their old shows and pay per view events. That NXT show moved to WWE Network, and they made more WWE Shows for the WWE Network. I predict other media companies will make their own Internet TV Networks this way.
I think there is money to be made in Internet TV with Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Google TV, Apple TV, and video game consoles can play Internet TV shows too. Plus any smart phone or tablet has Internet TV apps now as well. But it is not the end of Cable TV, just cutting into their business.

There was this game called Sweet Tooth that they ripped off and then called the copycat as Candy Crush. I used to play Sweet Tooth where it was like Sega Columns but with candy and you matched the candy to remove it. So Sweet Tooth was a Sega Columns clone, that had tried to clone Tetris for the Sega Genesis.
The 'stuff' has hit the fan, and everyone knows that Candy Crush is a copycat and they sue others over the use of the word 'Candy' in video games. The Emperor has no clothes, and with their IPO they cannot innovate enough to show future growth so the stock tanks and falls and this is normalization.
Zynga went through this as well, made copycats of other games, like Sim Ville copycatted The Sims. Zynga had tried to recruit me several times, but I refused, because I knew their business plan didn't work, and I also know that KIng's business plan is the same as Zynga and other copycat companies.
Microsoft once tried to copy Apple, it was Steve Ballmer's idea and seconded by Bill Gates. See how well that went for them? Microsoft Surface Tablets lost $1.89B USD and Ballmer went into 'early retirement' and investors want Gates gone too. Microsoft might never recover from that, and end up like IBM, Wang, DEC, Osborne, or even Commodore or Atari.

I tried other VR Goggles since then, and never were they any good.
Your brain gets all screwed up using the VR gear. For example your hand/eye coordination changes to the VR world. You spend 12 hours in the VR world moving stuff with your hands. Then you take a break to drink a soda and pour it into your eye instead of your mouth.
The Oculus Rift is no different, and unless they address this issue there will be lawsuits against Facebook as millions of people use it for 12 16 24 hours at a time, and then in real life everything is messed up with their motor control.
Some have joked the OR is nothing more than a Scuba Mask with two iPad Minis on each lens. I think it is far more than just that.
Virtual machines cannot solve every problem.
The thing is there are a lot of retro and legacy software out there that people need to run, but won't run on modern systems.
Virtual Machines solve that problem, but they don't do things like 3D acceleration very good so that 3D video games for Windows won't run in a virtual machine. But as far as the 2D business apps go, they run quite well.
Most business software is written for DOS, OS/2, and 16 bit Windows. None of the modern 64 bit systems will run it. DOSBOX can run most 16 bit DOS programs but lacks printer support and other things. With a virtual machine an IBM PC-DOS 2.0 for example it is possible to emulate a parallel port and redirect the printing using a DOS based Postscript driver so that the printing goes to a Postscript file and then using Ghostscript it can be printed on any modern printer.
I really don't see why this subject is not discussed more on Hacker News. Many businesses are still running very old DOS, OS/2 and 16 bit Windows PCs because the modern systems break their critical business software. If those machines fail, there are no new ones to buy and replace them. So these 386 and 286 PC systems have become rare and worth a lot of money. But a Virtual Machine can run an old DOS, OS/2 or 16 bit Windows version to run the old business software on a modern PC using QEMU or VirtualBox or even VMWare.
I know people who want to do virtual machines for these businesses, but how does one start out doing that? Most of these businesses have a limited budget and cannot afford to pay developers to write new modern versions of their mission critical apps, so they keep using the old PCs and hope they don't break.
I'm all for anything that makes managing servers easier, but why use swear words in the name? It is unprofessional.

In the future 2032 the US government passes an N-Chip law putting neurochips in the brains of the mentally ill and people with a criminal history in trying to control them. The two main characters got tricked into making the chip and this megacorp modified it. It has backdoors to shock the brain unconscious or to death. People rebel and protest, and are killed by security guards and police with neurorifles that activate the backdoor in the chip.

They learned programming by reading blogs and pirated PDF files on BitTorrent. Of course they don't got a level of understanding most hackers here have.
You want a good programmer you need 15+ years of experience plus a good understanding of computer science, recent high school and college dropouts don't have that.
You hire a cheaper labor source, you won't get that level of quality a more expensive labor source will give you and you get what you pay for!
Do stuff for yourself, if other people like what you make they will buy it.
I used to listen to what others had to say, I would get all sorts of useless feedback and bad advice. It led me to a really bad confidence problem that effected my work and lowered my potential. When I started to do things the way I wanted to, I make things better and did better software and writing.
