I registered and currently manage one of these .gov domains. Registration took some time, but it was an interesting process and felt pretty cool once it was finally provisioned!
I have a vague recollection of a piece of software distributed by Bank of America in the mid-to-late 90s that featured an interface similar to Microsoft Bob. From what I remember, it was similar to Quicken. Was never able to find any information about it, and granted I was probably 5 when I found it on the family PC so the memory is a little fuzzy, but seeing these old design languages from that era of computing is always neat.
I think you're right, although I've noticed that there's a timeout where newer cars automatically turns off if the key fob doesn't come back within range after so many minutes. Probably a safety feature to avoid accidental walkaways, whereas the button required a deliberate two-step action (hold down while turning and removing the key) to activate the feature.
At first glance this reminded me of some Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor models which had similar unlabeled buttons. One would disable all exterior lights, including brake lights, for going into stealth/surveillance mode. An adjacent button was used to be able to remove the key and keep the engine running, while preventing the car from being shifted out of park until the key was inserted again. I haven't seen either feature re-introduced in the newer Explorers or Fusions though.
I'm curious as to when the attack took place, because our ADT alarm system was going haywire a couple weeks ago. Their support department said they were having communication issues to our control unit, and on our end there were random tones beeping on all of the alarm pads for about twelve hours, yet no fault/communication failure indicator. We've had the system for years and have never had any similar issues. Maybe coincidental? Although I tend take these disclosure statements with a grain of salt and assume that some detail gets quietly swept under the rug.

I remember begging my parents to take me to a Radio Shack to get one of these when I was in second grade. The idea of being able to scan various items around the house was such a wild concept to me for some reason. Once we finally tracked one down, I scanned every book on my shelf into a trial copy of Winnebago Spectrum that I had obtained. It was the software suite that my elementary school's library ran off of, and I installed it on a Windows 2000 PC that my dad had passed down to me after upgrading the office computer. God knows how many hours I spent playing library with my younger sister and aimlessly scanning ISBNs - such simple times! Surprisingly I still have that same PS/2 CueCat in my drawer, though it hasn't been plugged in for at least fifteen years.
I know many of us in this community tend to look back at the earlier days of the internet very fondly and feel the nostalgia hit strongly, and I think it's because of the innovations (or maybe gimmicks?) like these that were novel and groundbreaking in many ways. Off the top of my head right now, I can't recall anything in recent times as quirky as the CueCat that would have evoked a similar excitement and genuine intrigue to a child today like I was fortunate to have experienced twenty years ago. But then again, I'm sure back then there weren't many seven year olds hunting down library database software and messing around with it for fun - so maybe my perspective is an outlier...
I currently carry a GETS card in my wallet, along with a second WPS-enabled iPhone. My agency instructs us to place a test call to the GETS/WPS "Familiarization Line" on a monthly basis to ensure we are able to connect successfully (and I suppose to also become comfortable with the process should we ever need to use it in a true disaster).
As the article mentions, we also have the app pushed out to all of our phones that can place outgoing calls with prioritization, but it only automatically keys in your PIN and the number you wish to reach after calling the dial access number. It's more of a convenience feature for those not wanting to manually enter the long string of digits for GETS. The app offers three modes to dial out: WPS, GETS, WPS+GETS. I always thought the WPS+GETS method seemed redundant, but I'm glad the author made the distinction on why stacking both methods makes sense.
Does anyone recommend any particular piece of software for creating these types of visualizations with relative ease? I've always been a fan of animations for helping to understand some technical topics.
You must be an official government entity at a local, state, or federal level. This can include cities, counties, special districts, joint power authorities, state offices, etc.
I went through the process of registering a .gov domain recently and it definitely takes a couple of months. It requires a letter of intent, wet signatures from elected official(s) on official letterhead, a phone call to a publicly listed number of an elected official, 2FA enrollment for the management of DNS/WHOIS, and a period of time in between some of these steps for some behind-the-scenes verification to take place. Despite the many steps, I did find it relatively straightforward and appropriate given the exclusivity of the TLD. In fact, the most difficult part (that I'm still working through) is convincing management that we should make the full migration to the .gov now that we have it registered...
Something I've had a longstanding desire to learn about is radio frequencies. I'm a very visual person, but I have yet to find any resource that explains it in a way that really makes sense to me. Especially when you start getting into modulation and whatnot. I'm fortunate to be able to use a variety of wireless technologies at work (licensed 80GHz, 18GHz and 950MHz frequencies), but I admittedly only have basic working knowledge and don't clearly comprehend what's happening at the lower physical level.
Does anyone have a good recommendation on any material that really made wireless technology understandable for you?
We had a few users try it out before we had a chance to block it using Group Policy. It was an abysmal experience for those who opted-in, and I can't imagine it ever replacing the native client without massive backlash in its current state. It clearly caters to a subset of basic users who only send/receive individually. Shared calendars, shared mailboxes, rule management, plugins, etc. were all absent and are features that a majority of our users rely on day to day. There's clearly a huge gap between the folks working on this new version and the native app's userbase — and sadly, as we've all observed, that's becoming the norm with a lot of releases coming out of Redmond lately.
We still work with an AS/400 (IBM iSeries) on a daily basis for legacy data, and it's impressive to watch how quickly our older staff members navigate the interface and get work done with it. It's several orders of magnitude faster than our newer web-based ERP, and I don't think I can be convinced that any modern browser UI will ever match the efficiencies offered by a terminal-based interface. That's not to discount the numerous technical benefits you reap by moving to a modern software stack, but strictly from an end-user usability standpoint, the AS/400 still wins in my book.
Or even easier, simply drive in the middle lane while adjacent to another vehicle to block the camera's view of your plate. Flock's cameras mount in the center median or sidewalk and are only capable of reading plates from the two nearest lanes of traffic. There are better solutions out there which mount onto traffic signal poles and monitor each lane from above, making it much more difficult to circumvent (intentionally or by happenstance).
Of course this isn't much of a concern when installed onto a two-lane residential street for targeted enforcement. Though I know most municipalities opt to only place cameras at points of egress/ingress on their borders with other cities, and those roads tend to be more than just two lanes.
Would you mind sharing the docket number or anything similar that would allow me to follow this case? I work in government and have had similar concerns about software vendors being very restrictive with data that's paid for with public/taxpayer funds.
I work in the public sector (US), and I have been advocating for something like this since I started my career.
The ERP we use for HR/Payroll, Accounts Payable/Receivable, Utility Billing, etc. costs an exorbitant amount of money each year, and the quality of both the software and the technical support we receive is comical. And this is new deployment, too. We upgraded from an IBM AS/400-based system a couple of years ago which I honestly long to go back to now and again out of frustration.
Let me give you just one an example of how we are held hostage to a private software vendor - collecting payment for utility bills. We are forced to use one credit card processor because it's the only "partner" that the ERP vendor has for payment processing. I guarantee you that you've never heard of them before. Their software is abysmal, and last time I checked, the ERP vendor gets a flat rate for each payment they collect (in addition to the standard credit card processing % + flat fee that goes to the merchant services company). There's no alternative. It's a Windows Service that has a tendency to crash several times a day without logging anything to Event Viewer. It's known to charge a credit card, but not return a success code to back the ERP, meaning the money was collected but their bill doesn't show as being paid. It's a problem I've documented clearly and created tickets on for over seven months at this point, and it's still not been resolved. Why? They have zero motivation. It's a beast to migrate to a new ERP (multiple years and $1M+), and they treat us as if we have no leverage in pushing for prompter support or better quality software. So luckily we are still on-premise with full access to the SQL database. I have written procedures to update the payment status manually each time this happens, post the transaction to the ERP, update reference numbers, and do a few other various things that should happen automatically when it works correctly. We were scolded for digging around ourselves and doing this, but if we open a support case, it takes 2-14 days to get a response back and that's simply not feasible when these payments need to post before EOB.
There's also no open API available. We have the in-house expertise to develop integrations and try to tie systems together in ways that make sense for our environment. Nope. Whatever few integrations that exists costs tens of thousands of dollars up-front, have very lackluster support, are infrequently updated, and are very rigid in their capabilities. I've asked how we can gain access to a sandbox environment or get documentation on an API so we can test and create the integrations that these sacred "partners" are able to -- radio silence. I've even reached out to individuals who work at the company on LinkedIn asking a similar question of how an independent developer can integrate with their ERP ecosystem -- left on read, no response.
Need a customization or change? Let's schedule a series of meetings and get it quoted out. $5,000 and two months later, we now have one new line of text displayed on our water bills about the drought. This is the level of control they maintain and use to line their pockets at our expense.
And now I've noticed that over the past year or so, there's been a very aggressive push to move to a SaaS environment. Meaning we'd lose direct access to SQL, lose access to logs and other tools I use to debug/diagnose, and be reliant on (read: held hostage by) the vendor even more. Good luck getting access to any of our raw data at that point. It's vendor lock-in to an extreme.
We (the agency, but more so the tax payers by extension) are victims. And we take it willingly without any pushback because there's no alternative. If anyone reading this is interested in helping fight against this or develop an open source alternative specific to government agencies, please reach out to me (email in profile here). I'm very passionate about this, having suffered so much aggravation over the years, and would love to work on bringing about some sort of solution.

We had one staff member in charge of both the library and computer lab at my school, and I always admired her know-how when we'd watch her demonstrate something or troubleshoot a problem. Looking back now at the selection of software she curated for us, the uniformity of the look-and-feel across all Macs on campus, having a networked file share accessible from the 2-3 iMacs/Macintosh LCs we had in each classroom and in the lab, I appreciate how she really went above and beyond for that period of time and fostered so much intrigue in me. I really have to attribute a lot of my interest in tech to her during those formative years.
This took me on a trip down memory lane back to my days in elementary school. I recall our class going to the computer lab once a week and having an hour to spend on an iMac G3, of which some were on OS8 and others OS9. Going back even further to kindergarten, our logins on those Macs were forced to use a simplified UI that displayed only icons/tiles of applications -- no browsing files or anything sophisticated from what I remember (edit: looks like they were called "Panels") [0]. The Incredible Machine [1] was what I personally looked forward to playing most. I'm sure nostalgia plays a big role in the feeling I get when toying around with emulators like this, but I'm also convinced that the simplicity, curiosity, and novelty of computing in the late 90s/early 2000s is something that I may never be able to replicate again in my lifetime.

As far as I'm concerned, anyone who has the means to pay off their student loans themselves practically won the lottery and they should be thankful they're not totally fucked like those who need the forgiveness.
Let me share my personal experience with you so I can try to shed some light on our varying interpretations of what "won the lottery" means. I went to college full-time, four days a week, and was a commuter. I was responsible for my entire car payment, my parking pass, my books/material, and for taking out a loan for tuition. I took it upon myself to get a part-time job while continuing to study and go to class for four and a half years. I then got a full-time job upon graduating and lived very frugally for two years with a huge chunk of my paychecks going towards paying off my car and student loans. The thought of paying interest killed me, and I did everything in my power to put every penny I could afford towards paying down my debt. I didn't go on vacations, didn't spend money frivolously on a new iPhone every year, didn't buy anything that wasn't necessary until my obligations were fulfilled.
Now let's revisit Person B (and to be clear, I personally know a Person B who's a close friend of mine who fits this description). They did not consistently work in college, but partied, went to festivals, took vacations, had a much easier schedule not having to factor in a job. They then graduate just like me. They have a few hundred dollars more every month that can go towards more vacations than I had the option to take, a more expensive car that I could not afford to buy, and more discretionary spending power than I had during that time. They work a job now, but have yet to begin repaying their loans yet (I understand the pandemic was a once-in-a-lifetime situation, but even so, there's a grace period after graduating where you aren't forced to pay). And even when payments resume, they will likely pay the bare minimum each month because they now have the prospect of having that debt potentially forgiven in its entirety.
How do you tell me with a straight face that I won the lottery, and that Person B is actually the one who is "fucked" (as you so eloquently put it) and needs the forgiveness?
Correct - both people in your scenario end up having no student loan debt.
But Person A, who paid their $30k loan in full, now has $30k less to spend on a home, a car, savings, etc. Person B, who did not pay their $30k, now has effectively $30k more in buying power either immediately or spread across what would otherwise have been their repayment timeline.
Person A's responsibility for their obligation has set them back $30k, while Person B's lack of responsibility for making payments has put them ahead $30k. Maybe we shouldn't call it a direct punishment, but they're certainly coming out of the scenario worse off than their counterpart.
I have several thousands of hours logged in CS:GO since it was released in 2012, and Valve's lack of concern with this particular exploit seems to mimic their inattentiveness to so many other aspects of the game. With the massive following that the Counter Strike franchise has and the boatloads of cash they continually bring in from digital cases/keys/skins, they most certainly have the resources to put out these types of fires immediately. Instead, they have taken a bare minimum approach to community outreach and maintaining a game that touts a 26 million player count each month [0]. The cheating situation is the most prominent example of how little focus the game earns from its developers. Compared to how other popular FPS titles (Valorant) handles anti-cheat, CS:GO is years behind. It's not uncommon to face at least one or two players a day who are using some form of cheat (some more obvious than others). Reporting the player does nothing, and when you visit their player profile on Steam and see accusatory comments about cheating going back months or years, you can be confident that your report will have little-to-no impact -- chalk it up as a loss and hope for more honest opponents next time. I've even seen exploits in the wild that can be used to prevent anyone else in the server from reporting a cheater in the game's UI; spinbots that can kill an entire team with perfect aim accuracy within a couple seconds; bunny hop scripts that allow for movements rates that far exceed what is normal when running -- basically things that some basic AI/ML should be able to detect with relative ease. Fortunately, other third-party services have built large player bases by offering their own in-house anti-cheat software and matchmaking service which is far more effective, but I digress. It's unfortunate to see something with such great potential get so little TLC from a company that is more than capable.
