Everybody has different preferences of how they want a search engine to look and feel.
I will never ever ever ever spend time going into the settings of a search engine to customize my search experience. Not when Google does a good enough job for most of my tasks.

if you don't want that type of comment on HN, feel free to remove it - it's not a big deal to me. But it's not a shallow critique - this article makes grand claims about how the brain works that are not backed up by any experiment or reference; it's reducing an extremely complex phenomenon - music and subjective experience of music - to a simple cognitive processing and meaning-making framework; and none of this makes any reference to work that other people have done on the matter. If you consider this a shallow critique, then I have to think that the only thing you wouldn't consider shallow is engaging deeply with the content, but that's not fair - for the reasons I gave, my contribution is claiming that this not worth engaging further with - it's crankery

I think it's a really cool idea but you have a network effect issue. I would expect it to be hard to get enough of my friends on it for it to be useful. Integrations with existing message apps and environments would be ideal, though I'm not exactly sure how that would look.

The cigarette lobbyist is making a specious argument comparing cigarettes to lettuce in order to exonerate cigarettes, despite that noone smokes lettuce, lettuce is not addictive, and it's just totally different altogether.
Similarly, your comment is trying to exonerate Facebook by comparing addictive Facebook use to... regular, "addictive" participation in healthy, fun physical activities? Despite the fact that it is a completely different situation: Facebook deliberately tries to be addictive, there are numerous studies about the negative effects of excess Facebook use, there are no physical health benefits, etc.

The capitalist ideological trick is: "are you happy houses were built? Do you enjoy the convenience of modern living? Then don't get mad at us for the tradeoff."
Don't forget that there have always been better ways to accomplish these goals - more equitable, safer for the environment - but they were not done because they did not achieve maximum profit for the individual who, through various historical factors not related to their merit or wisdom, could control the capital necessary for the project.
I cant speak to the economics on your side, but from a consumer point of view, the main issue I'm having is: how do I know this thing will even work? I don't want to shell out $10 and wait for processing time only to find out it doesn't even work
Maybe one way is to let users upload it for free, interactively search the first 10s for free, and then require payment to look through the rest of the video. If I felt confident that it was going to work, and I had a real reason to search through the video, I would probably pay between $1 and $5, depending on the length of the video. Much more than that and I'd rather just scrub through it myself. I guess the length of the video is roughly proportional to how much I'm willing to pay to not have to scrub through it myself.
The other thing is that it's much easier to scrub through and find an image, rather than voice. If I want to find a bike, I can just scrub through at 10x and look for bikes, a bike isn't going to just appear in a single frame and disappear in the blink of an eye. If it also searched voice, it would be worth even more.
the problem with this analogy is that when you lose a lot of users, you lose the network effect. so even if a user is low-value in terms of their actual engagement, they bring value by luring others in
I could see that there are some users who would want an ongoing subscription, such as a security office who looked through security videos on a regular basis to investigate thefts. But I have to think that in a lot of cases there will be people who just want to search through a video or two on a one-time basis - why not a per-video, non-subscription pricing option?
I don't own a smart TV because every smart TV I've used has been in an airbnb and they are generally sluggish to the point of being unusable. Even my plug-in Roku has gotten to this point. I don't understand what it could be. Memory leaks? It's totally bizarre
I can see how in the short term it's a positive service - they can now keep their lights on, their water running, etc.
But as a long-term proposition, a permanent adjustment to the status quo, it just feeds into an exploitative system in the same way that loan sharks do. You're filling a gap that should be filled with higher wages, and reducing wages from the most-vulnerable to do so.

Really disappointed to read this. Wages are so low that working people can't pay their bills, so your solution is to lower their wages even more? There was another YC company like this but they were charging the company, not the employees. You may not be a loan shark, but you are enabling the company to pay low wages and offloading the cost of mitigating the problem to the already-exploited. This is ethically dubious, at best
its not too hard to find people explaining that they do, and why they do (just google "representation matters" and im sure you'll find a lot). sounds like youre not open to learning about other peoples experience, or you simply dismiss it as whiny
this is a really cool idea!! It would definitely help organizing knowledge for upkeep, even for myself let alone for others. I may or may not use it because I'm just renting, but I'll keep this in mind and may pick it up. It's kind of like a house-specific wiki
I have a sad realisation that "engagement" is more likely "enragement." Humans are activated best by anger. Joy? That is a big deactivator...
This is interesting. Because if you have joy, you might be like "maybe I should just put this FB down and continue enjoying my life." But if something angers you, it activates you to stay on and hold on, instead of taking it easy which can lead to logging off.
