I'll say as long as you’re not repeating the same mistakes and each project teaches you something, you’re getting closer to the exit of the maze.
The only time I paid was for Excel or Wordpress plugins and it would have been a one time payment.
Some people can work long hours and never experience burnout because they love what they do, while others simply need a better work-life balance. A 4-day workweek is what brings that work-life balance. For anyone interested, here are 200 companies hiring for 4-day weeks - https://okjob.io/companies/
(P.S. I maintain the page. If you know of any company operating on a 4-day week (4x8hrs), please consider submitting it via the contact form)
This is so useful when buying a house in the country that sun is as valuable as gold and you want to maximise it in the backyard. Great tool.
Companies are adopting the 4 day work week, but the numbers are still super small, even in tech industry that are most open to these type of experiments. Nevertheless it's happening and it's a movement with a lot of supporters around the world. For anyone interested here is a directory of 200 4-day week companies I work on: https://okjob.io/companies/ New company submissions are very welcome.
There is a small trend among private companies, specifically in the tech sector, in moving to a 4 day week (the real 4 day week, 4x8hrs schedule) as they recognize the benefits for both sides, especially around retained productivity and better well-being, which then translates to better talent retention.
Advocates such as 4 Day Week Global consult companies on this topic and coordinate trials for them to test the waters or share results of surveys (available online) done with companies that already undertook such a trial. I've been watching this space for some time now and it's all definitely worth the attention.
Btw. I list 4 day week companies https://okjob.io/companies/ so if you know any business operating shorter weeks let me know.
A four-day workweek across all sectors is still years away; however, a good few private companies, especially those in the tech industry, have adopted it. Here are 169 companies (https://okjob.io/companies/) that have implemented short workweeks for those who are interested. The USA and the UK are the leading countries with 4 day week companies(P.S. I manage the site.)
From the report's summary:
61 organizations participated. A year after the pilot, 54 of these organizations continue to implement the 4 day workweek. Among these, 31 organizations have decided to make the 4 day workweek a permanent arrangement. This means 89% of the participating organizations have continued with the policy in some form, and within this group, 51% have committed to the policy permanently.
Thumbs-up for offering the 4 day workweek
Many companies acknowledge the reality of burnout, and with a scarcity of talent in certain professions, they believe that offering 4 day workweeks is a step in the right direction. A bit of self-promotion here, but I curate a list of companies that offer shorter weeks for those who are interested: https://okjob.io/companies.
That's why you see some companies offer 4 day week to their departments with creative roles and not task-oriented with easily measurable output such as warehouses, a good example is ThredUp company.
This years I got involved in exploring anything 4 day week (4x8hrs), so I built:
- 4 day week job aggregator. Currently ~200 listed jobs from companies around the world: https://okjob.io/
- 4 day week companies. 120 hand picked companies hiring for 4 days (not seasonal 4 day week or 4x10hrs)): https://okjob.io/companies
- 4 day week calculator. A funny little tool to calculate the number of workdays you save before retirement by switching to 4 day week job:https://okjob.io/4-day-week-calculator/
So far, the highest number of 4 day week companies in the private sector appears to be in the US, followed by the UK.
Source: I maintain a page listing 120 4-day week companies. For every 10 new companies I add, 6-8 will be from these two countries.

There is one company (close.com)that gives you the option to work for 4 days @ 80% pay, or 5 days a week for full pay. All the other companies offer a 4 day work week at full pay.
Here is one thing about 4 day week that opens eyes. If you are let's say 35 and hope to retire at 60, switching to a 4 day week could save you about 1,300 workdays—that's, roughly 3.5 years.
The 5-minute window where my funny 4 day week calculator will shine: https://okjob.io/4-day-week-calculator/
I've recently finished a handpicked list of 4 day workweek companies (4x8hrs), and off the top of my head, only 2 out of nearly 100 offer the option to choose between a full time 5x8hrs and a 4x8 with a 20% salary reduction. All the other companies listed only offer the 4 day week option + full pay - the 4x8 with the reduction in pay were an exception on the list.
To my knowledge, the groups that lead the 4 day workweek campaigns on the international stage advocate for a 4 day workweek without a loss of pay, this could be one of the reasons why we don't see companies offering 4 day weeks with a pay reduction.

Morningbrew will be the top example.
Forbes: "Morning Brew’s native advertising revenue averages $200,000 a week thanks to more than 40 active clients, including Microsoft, JPMorgan and Allbirds."
It doesn't make me lazy but I clearly feel different. The quantity makes some difference but still no matter how small the portions are the feeling is not the same as if I had no meat. I feel that being 100% vegan isn't healthy but I recommend to everyone to try go vegan for a couple of days and not take the current feeling for granted.
If you have spare 15min I recommend reading this extensive summary of researches on how coffee is sabotaging our brain's energy http://blog.myneurogym.com/is-coffee-sabotaging-your-perform...
What has worked for me are the following things.
1. I have quitted drinking coffee about 5 years ago. I love the taste and smell of coffee but it's a joke what it does to people's wellbeing.
2. I am semi vegan, 3/4 of my diet is a vegan diet. I only eat meat on the weekends and only in small portions. During the week when I need to be sharp I avoid it completely.
3. I stopped eating bread and if I feel like eating it I would get a gluten free one.
4. Before going to sleep I get a pint of water.
That's it, 4 simple rules. If you try it for 5-10 days you will never look back. At times I miss a chunk of medium rare piece of steak on Thursday after work or a nice smelly fresh cup of coffee in the morning accompanied by a chocolate muffin but what I learned is that the endorphins spike that follow up the food intake would be momentary and can not compete with the level of energy my brain produce without it.
Has to be Joe Rogan.
I used to be concern over what happens to all the sensitive information I put out on google's servers, I was so concerned that I even started following Richard Stallman's guidelines until I realized how quality of my life decreased and how unhappy I've become for the sake of being secured. You can of course achieve some balance and protect only the most important things to you but don't fall into the trap of overdoing it.
I'm back to using Gmail again.
"if you get demoralised this game is not for you..." ultimate answer. Love it.
I tend to be a content oriented maker so as long as I have the content the project gets formed around it. I used to like to play with logo designs logominer.com was my website. You can still find my twitter account @logominer that shows screenshot of the website. Basically I was looking for away to present a break down of established logo designs such as DHL, Nike or Dropbox and other so I created an app portfolio. Recently I came across a book author that I made a contact with as I liked his books so much. After some email exchanges we came up with idea of promoting his books on a website that I would have to build https://hundredfoot.com. Later I got a few other authors onboard but the point is that go and look for the content to process and present in a different shape or form. Go after things you like and make a product around it. It will often end up being just a side project but you will enjoy the process not to mention learn new things. Good Luck
Great response from the HN community. For anyone interested in the project: https://hundredfoot.com/ If anyone would like to get in touch, shoot me an email: info[at]hundredfoot com
I never heard of the Bandcamp service. They seem like a definition of perfectly executed niche service, I'll watch them closely from now.
Very interesting idea. There is definitely many useful parts of their service that I could implement. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks to all who took the time and wrote back. Every comment is valuable to me.
