We're looking for a Full-Stack Software Engineer with experience building web applications using Python and a modern front-end javascript framework. We use Django and Vue, but for the right candidate specific experience isn't important to us.

This would be a client-facing role with minimal travel requirements (5-10%) and multiple status calls per week with the client(s).

Domain-specific knowledge is not a requirement, but certainly helps. Be prepared to ask a lot of questions and be challenged to understand how the biological entities relate to one another.

I'm considering it. I went to public school my entire life but I've spent the better part of the last decade with self-directed learning (programming).

I think it's that combined with my belief that our current educational model is broken and inefficient (as well as articles like these) that makes me want to explore unschooling more. Thanks for sharing these links.

The author hits on a lot of great points here, that I believe speak to a larger theme: there's a ton of undervalued programming talent out there and finding that talent can give your company a huge leg-up on the market.

If only the approval process didn't take 250x as long as the actual building of the units...

That's the sad reality of bay area housing in 2018. However, if they keep building enough units like these, prices should eventually become less insane.

Thanks for the data-point. Everyone seems to like the build quality, which is more important to me than ease of use with Linux. I figure I'm going to have to roll up my sleeves to get it working the way I want, anyways.

+1 for a ThinkPad. I'm running Ubuntu 16.04 on an x230 that I purchased for $200 and it works great for me for limited dev work.

I'm thinking about purchasing a new one with maxed out specs and it seems like Ubuntu/Debian support is pretty solid on the new models, with some exceptions of course. The p51s looks like a good compromise between power and portability for me.

edit: And the keyboard is amazing! you'll love typing on these things.

I'm Jordan, the founder of Speizer Software. We are a small software consulting shop that works primarily in the Biotech field, building web applications for bioinformatics purposes.

We're looking for a developer who is well-versed in the modern front-end landscape and feels comfortable building JavaScript applications from the ground up. We're pretty agnostic on framework but ideally someone with experience using React and Vue would be ideal. Most of what we build uses Python on the back-end so some familiarity with that would be nice, but not crucial.

This is a contract (1099) role and we are a fully distributed team so remote is the only option, really :)

as someone who has to manage projects for multiple clients, I find docker + docker-compose to be the best solution. The overhead of docker is totally worth it because the container separation makes life so much easier.

all I need to work on a client project is basically:

cd /path/to/project

docker-compose build (just once)

docker-compose up

Service businesses still get 20% deduction on business income up to a certain income threshold, which is pretty substantial (I think it's just under 400k). Have you talked to your accountant?

It's the best OS for me because I containerize as much as I can (I use a separate docker-compose file for every client, for example). I've tried Docker on Mac, Windows and Linux, and it _just works_ on linux. The others were a major pain.

The added benefit of doing it this way is that I'm not really tied to a machine - all I need to do is clone my repos onto a new machine and I'm basically good to go.

This is fantastic. We need more mentorship in software development.

Yeah, at best Bitcoin is pseudonymous (through mixing or obfuscating through exchanges). But really, what person committing tax fraud or other underground activity wouldn't just use an actual privacy focused crypto such as Monero (as you said)?

When reading articles like this I substitute "Bitcoin" for "Cryptocurrency" and it makes more sense. The public has just recently normalized Bitcoin and so that's what they write about. Give it a year or so and they'll catch on.

I use bitcoin.tax and it's made things so much easier. You can import trading history from the major exchanges and for any non-major exchange trading you can import manually or with a CSV.

It's free for up to 100 "events" (trades, mining, gifts, income, etc) and a reasonable $20 per year for anything above that.

I'll be taking the output from that software to give to my accountant and go from there.

Are banks actually using the XRP token, or just a private version of ripple technology? I can't get a clear answer on that.

Also is it possible for me to use ripple to pay for things today?
