I also appreciate the marvelous rhythm of the modern world, more miracles per square foot than the life of any saint.

I was unpacking and yesterday from a move and saw a copy of his "Darwin's Dangerous Idea" book and remembered he time he answered a fan email I sent to him with the simple reply "It's always nice to receive an email such as yours." - here's to hoping you are wrong about the soul Dan!

I firmly believe the only way to stop our culture from obsessing over the wrong things (politics, climate emergency, vaccines) is to give it something even worse to focus on - enter the War on Plastic! I genuinely hope this catches on and people start putting anti-plastic flags on their lawns.

I used to ride my bike to work in Boston, and one day I ran into the rear fender of a car who had cut me off, basically crashing into the car at pretty high speed, and the car didn't even notice.

I realized that even if I was a master at city biking, through no fault of my own I could easily die or be seriously injured, and I haven't ridden a except for fun now and then since.

you are totally right - I just watched the original Point Break over the weekend and all the surfing scenes obviously have different human beings from the actors they are meant to resemble but your brain still wants to think they are the same.

It's been a little while - but I think it's because NP problems can be converted into each other, so if you can solve one of them in P you can solve all of them in P.

thank you - I thought someone might make a comment like this, which is why I added the qualifier ("weather which led to the dust-bowl") to distinguish it from the human factors - but hey - it's cool - and I love that you used the word "aeolian" - thats a really cool word :)

my point was just that weird weather has been happening for a long time, and if you think about it, if the weather people can't predict whether it will rain or not 2 weeks from now, how can they possibly predict there will be more or less storms 5 years from now, 10 years, etc?

I'm sorry, but this is utterly unhinged. There is no evidence of weather patterns of any kind, much less indications that we are about to face "extreme-weather". What caused the weather which led to the dust-bowl? What caused the ice-age?

The climate of the earth has changed for millions of years w/o humans, and while certainly greenhouse gases impact the current trends, they aren't cause for apocalyptic concern.

I realize many people will probably vote this into oblivion, but I do not think there is a climate crisis at all.

Sorry about your friend.

I bought some books yesterday from Powells - a good bit more expensive - and I won't get them for 2 weeks - but I feel good about it - and will give me more time to read the books I already bought and haven't finished.

Could just be time to move on from amazon... they had a nice run

There are kind of two main axes you can impact

1. The Devs

2. The Org

For The Devs

With regard to the developers you need to make sure they have what they need to succeed, and to help them grow.

For this "Peopleware" is great - it helps understand the "servant leader" mindshift

For The Org

With regard to the organization, your main job will be making sure the organization doesn't make classic mistakes.

Mythical Man Month is great for this. Another great resource is the "Classic Mistakes" section from McConnell's book Rapid Development.

If you google that you can find a PDF for it.

FWIW - I started a game on Defold and ended up rewriting and porting it to Unity. It's been a while since I used it - about a year - but Unity just has a lot more bells and whistles.

Defold uses message passing, which initially I was very excited about, but it turns out my brain is used to thinking about objects and references and I kind of struggled to do simple things in Defold which is part of the reason I switched to Unity.

One thing that did make it over in the port is a cool actor-based AI that I probably wouldn't have thought to use if I started the game in Unity.

Defold does give you a ton of control though and it would enable more customization than Unity, especially now that it is open source.

I should also say the Defold community is great and the devs behind the game engine are very helpful.

And this is my first game so any difficulties with Defold could be due to my initial learning curve.
