If the JIT engine in Nitro had a JIT Spray vulnerability and Nitro was a shared library could it allow an attacker to inject code into other applications that also use Nitro?

Not that shared libraries are a problem, just that JIT'ing introduces a new attack vector that is hard to secure.

I'd imagine they mean indexing (and being able to search on) data in real time. Given LinkedIn's previous open source projects around real time search (http://javasoze.github.com/zoie/).

Lucene (which Solr uses as its index) cannot expose newly indexed data immediately after it's added.

Lucene exposes IndexReaders for searches, which offer a snapshot view of the index. In order to search across new documents IndexReaders need to be re-opened, a somewhat expensive operation. Expensive enough to prevent it from happening after each document is added, especially if they're added frequently.

The latest version of Lucene supports "near real time" search, but afaik it's not widely used (with Solr).

From data we've collected[1] more iOS devices (the majority) are running the most recent version of the OS, compared to Android.

Even though they may have an update available (non-eligable devices excluded) not every user knows how or is able to update their device.

  Which disregards that non Microsoft employed people create languages for .NET too. Nemerle is a great example, and that's how the Iron projects initially started before MS got involved

Try Eclim, it runs Eclipse in headless mode and connects it to Vim, letting you use the code inspection & analysis of Eclipise within Vim.

Those are great, here are a couple more i find very useful:

Reminds me of a story about Mario Puzzo:

When he signed the contract for The Godfather to be made into a movie the royalties he'd receive were to come from the net income of the movie, not the gross. Due to the accounting practices described in the article the film hardly made any money on paper (it grossed a lot but had exaggerated expenses). Already wealthy, Puzzo bet his royalties (a fraction of what he expected) on a roulette spin and walked away. The moral is to always get a percentage of the gross, not the net.

You don't need to operate in the first tier of customer support to help them either. We have a forum that developers monitor & post to (http://forum.brightcove.com/brgh/?category.id=developers). It's easy and not disruptive to interact with customers this way and it has the advantage of serving as a record so future users with the same problem. Users help users too, it's not only developers posting.

plus you get tests out of figuring out your design, not just interfaces.

Since each color is an LED display and can display shapes it'd be cool to use the traffic lights to direct people to detours when a road is closed or over capacity.

Do they run the message queue on the same box as the gateway server in production? If not then the test he ran isn't a direct comparison (since network latency between the app server & queue isn't accounted for). Running both of those services on the same box isn't great either, since they could slow each other down, and you lose both if the box dies.

Still, very cool, congrats ankrgyl, it's awesome to be able to write stuff like that as an intern!

API keys usually exist for preventing abuse. By exposing an authenticated API proxy you're allowing anyone to abuse someone else's API using your key, likely leading to them banning you. At a minimum you should implement your own rate limiting.

The article describes how to set up caching in nginx, so not every request to nginx goes to the external service.

You can enable multiple sign in in your account settings page. It lets you switch between accounts very quickly and doesn't require re-authenticating each time.
