It is hard, but only if you try to find the general solution. If instead you think in the way the problem designer (who had a target audience of 3rd graders in mind) intended the solution to be found, then it becomes easy to find a solution: one of each toy from the yo-yo to the car (inclusive). It depends what you mean by "very limited". All the code is provided to you, so you can get through the book by simply copying and pasting the provided code snippets. As long as you understand what the code is actually doing just by reading it, you'll be okay. The book has some "challenges" where you can implement additional features if you want to, but you don't need to. However if your knowledge of Java or C is so limited that you'll have a hard time even understanding what the code is doing, then it's probably not worth the effort going through the book. It will be too confusing, and you won't learn much.

Yes. I'm halfway through it now, and while I do have a degree in CS, all that's really needed is knowledge of Java and C. If anything, it's less formal than a compiler / PL course one would normally take during undergrad.

Why should our taxes be handed out for risky business endeavors with no direct public benefit, when the private sector already has the means to handle this.

SBIR/STTR money is primarily used for R&D work for high risk technology. The risk being that it might not work, or might not solve the problem you're trying to solve. You don't spend the money on marketing and sales. It's meant for technologies precisely in the stage that the private sector is not good at handling, for similar reasons that the private sector isn't good at funding basic research. This stage is referred to as the funding gap or the valley of death[0][1].

Government agency usually gets perpetual use license of your product.

Misleading. The agency, in this case NSF, obtains march in rights for patents (not data) developed using funds received from them. They will only exercise that right in the most extraordinary circumstance. Basically, if you develop a cure to cancer and then decide not to commercialize it or make it publicly available, they may exercise march in rights and take it over. No agency, not even the DoD, has ever exercised it, to my knowledge.

This whole article is a bit baffling to me. I'm having trouble understanding what the message is. That advertisers are using technology in their ads? Why wouldn't they? That they are trying to "normalize" the influence that code and technology has on our lives? It's already normalized. There isn't a dark conspiracy where advertisers subliminally incorporate language to drown out the luddites. There are big tech companies that want to advertise their brand and their tech. And there are non-tech companies that want to advertise using the language and norms we're already familiar with.

Not sure if the "Maps of X" games are titled appropriately. They should be called "Shapes of X". Even after learning shapes of various countries, I don't learn where they are on a map, though I can recognize them by searching a map and eventually identifying them by their shape. Maybe in the info section after you guess it right, you can show a map and show the country you just identified highlighted on the map.

I was in the first cohort of the front-end nanodegree, and I also took the full-stack shortly after. I'm pretty shocked by this statement. For me, the vast majority of learning happened by implementing the topics that were discussed in the short videos. Given that the videos are very brief summaries of the topics you're meant to implement in the projects, It's pretty odd you gained nothing from doing them. Did you know the material before starting the nanodegree? If so, I'd argue the fault is on you for choosing a curriculum meant for beginners whilst being intermediate or above. Otherwise you're a very rare person for being able to learn more from watching videos and reading articles than by actually practicing what is taught.

That would imply either that big companies all started as small companies which became successful and grew large, which is false (some big companies start big). Or that big companies operate the same way as small companies, just at a larger scale, which is unequivocally false.

It's not a fascination, it's a defense mechanism that's been built up over time. Skateboarding has a strong culture, and various brands throughout the decades have tried to use skateboarding in their marketing without bothering to research that culture. Look at Nike and Adidas. They tried to break into skateboarding many times in the past and always failed, until recently. The difference is this time they ingrained the cultural aspects into the brand.

As for posers, skateboarding historically has gone through waves of popularity. It's cool, then it's not, then it is again. The people that skated during the time where it was uncool are obviously going to be defensive when all of a sudden it's cool again and there's a large influx of people who have no regard for the culture.

I'm personally for inclusion, but I also think that if there wasn't some degree of "gatekeeping" then the cultural side of skating would have been diluted long ago. And perhaps as a result of that the sport wouldn't have survived the periods where it was seen as something that only freaks and geeks did.

I had that class in HS. Or at least I had a general statistics class where the teacher emphasized interpreting results, common fallacies, etc. As one might expect, the students didn't pay attention to anything other than memorizing the formulas and spitting them back out on the test. They then promptly forgot the formulas the memorized. I took the optional follow up class as an elective. Even amongst the students of that class, who were interested enough in statistics to take a more advanced one as an elective, all of us had to re-learn the formulas we forgot.

My point is, I know it's simple to notice a problem in society and think that the obvious solution is to make it required learning, but it won't stick unless its reinforced over and over again. It can't just be a class, it has to be reiterated in various forms throughout many classes.

I would take some Electrical Engineering classes, maybe even minor in it. Given an abundance of time, I would also take some higher level math classes. Based on your interests a broader exposure to these fields, which are strongly related to CS but only lightly-to-moderately covered in a standard CS curriculum, can only help.

For me personally, I would do a deep dive on distributed architecture, which you may also be interested in given your interest in p2p.

I'm sorry, but I have a hard time believing that. My university had a decent CS program, but not top 10 or anything. You wouldn't be able to get past the required intro to CS class without knowing how to code fizzbuzz, much less move on to the later courses. Unless the students you're talking about cheated on every assignment and test, in every class.

It doesn't even make sense. Their customers must cover a wide age range, so why use language directed at only their youngest customers? Not to mention any one who actually uses "fam" and "lit" is going to cringe at this post. The whole thing belongs in r/fellowkids.

Maybe it was just an assumption that I never thought about, but I had always thought STEM to mean the intersection of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. There's already a large overlap between them, so the intersection was also large. So STEAM would not be the addition of all Arts but the intersection of science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and the arts. For example, something like the Mona Lisa is not a part of STEAM, but the aesthetic design of a UI would be. In that sense, the arts matter very much. If we ignore the arts, we have ugly and non-intuitive designs, which lead to lower usability.
