Nice article and PostHog is one of my favourite startups to look for especially on the culture side. Your careers page and compensation calculator is a breath of fresh air.
Yeah, these interviews can be a knowledge base. You could have links to past interviews by category for people to read through. But do give people an option if they want their interviews publicly listed or not. Great for practice and clarity of thought.
Edit: Just read my own chat again. I did the "interview" quite hurriedly. I can't believe how far we have come with these tools. I think a lay person who is not aware of this technology would not be able to discern that the interviewer is not a human and that's saying something.
This is quite nice for practice even if you know its ChatGPT. I tried for a product manager role https://practiceinterview.co/interview/80?key=a3f9cef7-5bbf-... and it was quite an interesting chat.
Thank you for your suggestions. I will definitely give this a try. Any recommendations for niche network. I keep getting mails from linkbux folks but I have no idea if they are legit or not.
Thank you, I appreciate your reply. I didn’t expect it to be this much either. Even at the lower end of that range, that’s like USD 500 which goes a long way and will definitely help.
I’d really like to know how much money can be realistically made. I have a niche price comparison website getting around 300k page views monthly. Would it make sense to bother with Adsense at this point since other attempts at revenue have not worked out.
I have read this story before on HN and every time it brings a smile to my face and idk why.
Can you share some insight into the hiring process?
Making simple games (board or pc) for my kids and playing games with them. Knowing that your parents think of you as a good person. Being helpful to others above and beyond. Those are mine that gives me an immense sense of content.
OP, you should charge users a small amount ($24-50 a year), after a trial period. Keep it simple, free of ads and keep the timeline algorithm free.
I’m sure there are many who would love something like this and be willing to pay enough to cover costs and maybe generate a full time income for you. Good luck!!
Nice set of learning’s and very pertinent for me as a solo bootstrapper.
What does HN think of web scraping for the purpose of price comparison?
I’m asking this because I run a small side project to show prices across retailers for a very small niche. The users are very very happy. Even the vendors started contacting to be listed on the comparison.
But I am unable to make a business out of it other than few affiliate commission.
Agreed completely. I meant in the sense of having this 100k once you retire and to continue to work on this high paying job for a few more years assuming you do a proper asset allocation.
Very well done. The best part is that a modest 4% return on net worth/investments will yield about 100k a year which is a very good amount for most people.
Thank you.
Thank you for sharing your experience. I would definitely take a look at Allen Carr.
It means I started off in a top software company and was on track to a relatively decent middle class life in US.
This is my greatest fear and has lead my life into a completely different direction. From a promising young CS graduate working in tech in US to someone who’s had to leave many opportunities to family members unable to travel with me, it is very debilitating.
I have tried exposure therapy, learnt a lot about flying, used sim games, and no amount of statistics has helped so far.
Maybe the fear stems from underlying unresolved issues about life and the fact that I haven’t done well relative to peers despite being promising early on.
Is it not viable to put majority of your data behind a login and so the bots only get a very limited snapshot while legitimate users get it through a free login?
I’m asking this because I’m going through very similar situation and would love to see other opinions around this.
Thank you for your reply.
I was definitely wishing to avoid the lottery but I guess it’s on case to case basis.
Hi Peter,
Thank you for doing this. I asked this question earlier but missed seeing your reply so I’ll state it again.
Can someone who has some unused time on H1B from long time ago, use it if they have a job offer from a US tech company and is presently outside the US?
It’s been 11 years since last present in US and the visa was approved a year earlier I believe.
Thank you.
Thank you appreciate your response. Would it be okay if I reached out to you on email for a couple of follow up questions?
This is fabulous. I had a webhook based service developed that I never launched. The write-up gave me a good push to maybe resurrect it.
Can you tell me what kind of infrastructure is this hosted on? It’s not trivial to be able to handle 250Mn (yearly?) and I’d love some insight.
This is an awesome post. Really well written.
Ok, honestly, this is one of the most fascinating things I have seen in a while.
This sounds fantastic. Kindly do a Show HN when you’re ready.
Can I give you a honest opinion since I was in a similar situation some time ago? Just take the $30-35 whatever offer they give and do the best work you can.
In the long run, if you’re good, they will come around and you can get a better deserved rate.
Having said that, $30 is a great hourly rate for South Asia (I’m from there), and will mean a lot of quick financial buffer and it helps stress wise.
We aren’t in US and it’s better to accept our reality. If the work culture isn’t what you are happy with, you can always use this experience and interview again in 6 months.
This is a very good read and the explanation takes a very balanced views of possible ways by which the virus could have become virulent. Thanks for submitting.
I’m sure some people would take this seriously.
