Since he needs 1000ms response on storage isn't ethernet the better option? It can reach 400gb/s on fastest hardware now. I thought Infiniband was only reasonable to use when machines need to quickly access other machines primary memory. I would like to know if I'm wrong about this though.
If anything the lifetime cost of electric deters me. Usually they come with 10 year warranties for the power side of the car, but I kept my last car for 20 years. If I buy electric I assume I essentially need to buy a new car or pay for an expensive overhaul after a decade. So the math is more along the lines of 20k for a gas car that will last for 20 years, or 40k for an electric car that will probably last 10 years. Yes, you save some on energy but probably won't offset total cost difference.

Banks are the most law breaking entities in the United States. They constantly have to make enormous settlements for the insane number of laws they break. These are just the settlements for Bank of America:

A better summary wouldn't be "they make plenty of money legally." It would be they make plenty of money illegally after paying the settlements.
Tens of thousands of people still regularly walk across continents. The Appalachian trail and pacific trail, for example.
The set "easy problems iterated" is a subset of "hard problems" and I would argue a very small and uninteresting subset. Biotech, energy, next gen computing physics; I don't see any of those as iterating on a simple problem.
It's "ingredient branding" now. I think the foundaries are becoming the "ingredient" more consumers and looking at, similar to how Intel famously pushed their CPU as the important ingredient in PCs. I think it will be a very good decade for TSMC/Samsung/GF(?) similar to Intel's 90's/2000's.
I agree, I oversimplified for the sake of brevity. I also don't know the details for hospital accounting, only the generals and that it is very complicated. In reality it would be they spend say $1 million on these cases. They could then say it was a public service and take it off their overall income. CDC or other grants might pay the rest depending on the severity of the outbreak. Whatever isn't covered would still be potatoes for most hospitals and worth more in prestige than the hospital could have bought with the cash. Again, I literally saw hospital executives fight over Ebola patients.
I believe in extreme cases such as this the hospital considers it an academic/research/prestige/security cost and would essentially charge the patient nothing or standard daily rates. I know when the Ebola scare happened in the US the prestigious hospitals near me were throwing $1,000,000's into constructing state of the art rooms for preparedness and to impress the CDC and get federal approval and academic recognition.
Also the hospitals can write these costs off of their taxes in various ways. If outbreaks like this cost them millions in expenses they have tax loopholes and it ends up costing them nothing.
The doomsday clock goes in both directions, it went "backwards" significantly for 10+ years after the Cold War.
You need to do basic reading into the doomsday clock. The primary concerns right now are catastrophic climate change and technological threats, including nuclear technologies. Regardless, many nuclear theorists and academics including Noam Chomsky (known war hawk and military industrial complex supporter) also think we are at an increasing threat of nuclear war.

The vast majority of the "FIRE" economic sector is not an important part of the economy. Before neoliberal economic policies and the government handing $10 Trillion + handouts to the FIRE sector, yes, it was important and efficient. Not now though, unfortunately.

I'm not quite as pessimistic as you regarding HK and Ukraine. In the short run, yes, the powerful people (China, Putin) will win. In the long run, will Putin and his cronies continue to have the economic power to strong arm all of Ukraine? I highly doubt it. In the long run will the CPC continue to pull 100m's in poverty into wealth while protecting their failing water systems, soil systems, international good will? Again, I highly doubt it. I think the long term is in favor of HK and Ukraine, not against it.
Edit: And regarding Occupy, it is often considered the most successful protest in modern Western history. Countless leaders and young people have seen it as a blueprint and guide to how to continue their struggle. I have seen dozens if not hundreds of videos on youtube that cite the enormous progress Occupy made on how to run a successful protest in the current era, and movements such as Extinction Rebellion are going to take those tactics to another level.

I love how Bloomberg immediately jumps to some market/chicago/hbs/wharton concept of wealth and ycombinator thinks of wealth in terms of actually prosperity that can be created.
NSA knows they need the storage, they didn't just figure out they needed to store a lot of data to perform a massive buy. It would much easier for the manufacturer to disguise 5% of constant purchases through various techniques, they could hide it in all sorts of ways. Also the NSA could set up shell companies to consistently buy output (frequently done during the cold war when USA needed to buy supplies from Soviet aligned nations, USSR itself). The NSA could hide behind major buyers like Google and Amazon. If the plant shut down for false reasons literally thousands of plants workers would know if was false. That wouldn't accomplish anything.
That is an interesting idea but it would be so much easier for them to constantly buy, say 5%, of the output.
I think it is fantastic our beloved government is making these admirable changes to protect us!

No one is saying these broadcast groups don't have 1st amendment rights, just that they were going about it in an anti-competitive way.
I'm not a lawyer but the first amendment argument is a separate concern than antitrust violations. You can exercise your first amendment rights while still breaching antitrust law.
Ironically technologists seem to have higher ethical standards than doctors and lawyers. Hell, the entire US medical system revolves around financial assault of the infirm.
