Same boat here, also Germany. Wanted to watch the Bourdain show "No Reservations" and it's practically impossible.

There are only 3 ways:

1. Import the DVDs from the US, but pay a high cost for the DVDs, the high cost of shipping, the taxes and customs and eventually, once it arrives, watch it.

2. Be a criminal, get a VPN, fake address and data, prepaid US credit card and subscribe to discovery in the US and watch it.

3. Be a criminal and pirate it easily.

Is piracy really the problem?

From what I remember when I last tried it, NaNoWriMo worked with the honor system. If you wanted you could paste a wikipedia article in the editor and it would count the words and tell you good job, but you'd only be lying to yourself in the end.

I'd argue it was a bad play, they gambled on something others had gambled and failed, and just as the rest they didn't even put a dent in the market. All they did was overspent their resources and now have to resort to layoffs.

You mention EA, and they did try to break into the market and left steam for a while... they had the money, the franchises, the personnel and they couldn't do it. Now they're back on steam. Anyone else would look at what happened and would learn from their mistakes.

For a while now, we've been spending way more money than we earn

I guess giving away free games and not charging deveveloper (or charging very little depending on exclusivity deals) wasn't the best financial decision. Who would've thought?

Shame about the people impacted by this, I actually know some of them, hope they find something quick.

I use uBlock Origin on Firefox on Android with "Actually Legitimate URL Shortener Tool" added

That's the problem. This is too complicated/too much trouble for the end user who just uses his iPhone via Safari. Do they the privacy and all that? Yes, will they go out of their way with all that trouble? No.

While you're not wrong that it's a company A fighting company B with users as pawns, it still is a win for the normal end user.

I dunno, I think it's pretty hard to keep cheating as a developer. How would a developer even cheat to get promoted? I mean, a PM I can see survive for longer, but a SDE?

I actually had this issue at my current job where we hired someone who seemed great and who did really well on his interview exercises but then once he started working... well, it was pretty obvious he did not know what he was doing at all. So he was let go straight away. There was no way he could cheat his way to stick it out for longer than a month.

Once AI can replace actors in movies, as well as singers and models like Instagram influencers and so on, maybe some of the weird hero worship and the paparazzi and the gossip mags and all that nastiness will fade away somewhat

I dunno, I remember seeing on youtube Hatsune Miku concerts being pretty packed, and there was that one guy who even married Hatsune Miku. Who knows what'll happen with AI.

I always thought that rice cookers were silly. I would think "I know how to cook rice so why have a rice cooker?" Couple of years later, not really sure what prompted me but I got one.

I will never go back and it's a must have for anyone that eats rice. Doesn't matter how good your rice turns out, the machine will always outcook you. Perfect rice, every time.

Funny enough this happened to me yesterday. I had to do a small change of code in a component and then when I pushed the code I got an error back. After searching for what was happening, it was actually a code I copied and named "Component2" two years ago when I was starting out. Today I would not have made it the way I did, but in my first month...

And thank god for github actions! :D

It's an interesting extension, will give it a go.

I've been booking a few hotels for this year as I have a bunch of trips aligned and booking is really fucking annoying. All those urgency prompts don't make me book faster or anything, they never did. And after a lot of bookings I tend to not even see them, my eyes already blur them out. I search for what I'm looking for and I book it.
