From what I see from the article the major gains were from investment in health and education which should be a no brainer.

I find it interesting that GPT-3 was available as an API for more than a year without generating this much excitement.

It wasn't until chatgpt was released that we fully grasped the potential of AI, leading to a surge in innovation every week.

It's fascinating how Voyager 1, despite my lack of space knowledge, utilizes a nuclear power source for 40+ years, offering steady and reliable power without any moving parts that could degrade over time.

In contrast, India's decision to rely on solar panels led vikram lander to be dead in just 14 days due to lack of sunlight (afaik).

I'm curious about the rationale behind this choice when nuclear power seems like a far superior option. Can someone shed light on this decision?

Recently, there have been scam Android apps in India that request access to users’ contact lists. These apps then blackmail users by threatening to send deepfake videos to their contacts, falsely accusing them of heinous acts like rape.

Tragically, some individuals have even committed suicide due to this blackmail(1). So dozens of people have actually killed themselves because they mistakenly gave a permission on their phone.. just let that sink in.

Google is in a difficult position. On one hand, they need to protect user data with strict security measures. On the other hand, these measures can be seen as overly restrictive. It’s a delicate balance, and unfortunately, there’s no easy solution.

Yes Reflecting on it, making things last longer had some great side effects. For instance, almost every woman in my family knew how to *rafu* clothes (1), and people understood how things worked under the hood of a car (like you my father did all the maintenance too). These skills were passed down through generations, becoming a part of our everyday knowledge.

I guess a lot of things aren't that simple or accessible as most of it is often a black box nowadays. But anyway, Skills like these not only saved money but also fostered a sense of self-reliance, resourcefulness and stuff your parents taught you as life skills.

Growing up in India about 20 years ago, we often repaired or renewed almost everything because our buying power was low and things were expensive. We used a lot of hacks, known as *jugaads*, to make things work. Even clothes were reused, with tailors doing *rafu* (patchwork) to extend their life. This was especially common in middle-class homes like mine.

My dad, who worked in a garment export house, used to tell me stories about how people in the West preferred disposable items and often opted for newer stuff, whether it was cars, gadgets, or clothes. At the time, I didn't understand this mentality. But now, with increased buying power and lower costs (thanks to China), we too tend to just chuck things away and get replacements.

I deeply admire people who don't give up midway and think it's easier to buy new. This type of persistence and resourcefulness is truly commendable.

Wow, the irony is Pinboard, the very service that championed the idea of "Don't be a free user" (1) is now shutting down (edit: sorry, ok not shutting down officially but apparently it's in a free fall for quite some time and nobody gives a damn (2)). Their article argued that free services often turn into pump-and-dump schemes, while paid services promise sustainability and better support. Yet here we are, witnessing the demise of a paid service that couldn't sustain itself.

It's a stark reminder that even paid models aren't immune to market forces and operational challenges.

Maybe the real takeaway is that no business model is foolproof, and unless you can self host something you can never know when and how it will end.

Same here in India. A lot of people hate Uber but speaking for me personally it's been a godsend upgrade over the black yellow taxis we had here before.

I believe they are the #1 reason why foreigner tourists are scared of coming to India. The amount of scam and harrasment done by these old taxi drivers is just another level. The luxury and straightforwardness of app taxis is unparalleled to what we used to have before.

There was also some (unconfirmed) news article that the whole database is for sale like $5 with millions of records. So if that was true, you can unlock almost any Indian persons phone!

The easiest antidote for procrastination is boredom.

This may not work for everyone but for me it works exceptionally. Most often the reason why you don't want to work on something is because you find it too hard, too boring, or too irrelevant. But if you force yourself to be bored for a while, you will eventually crave some mental stimulation.

And that's when you can pick up the task you have been avoiding and work on it with renewed interest and focus.

Of course, this requires some discipline and self-awareness. You have to resist the temptation of checking your phone, browsing the web, or doing anything else that distracts you from your boredom.

Maybe there is some psychological reason for it but I have found this technique to be very effective for overcoming procrastination and getting things done.

I recently downloaded ollama on my Linux machine and even with 3060 12gb gpu and 24 GB Ram I'm unable to run mistral or dolphin and always get an out of memory error. So it's amazing that these companies are able to scale these so well handling thousands of requests per minute.

I wish they would do a behind the scenes on how much money, time, optimisation is done to make this all work.

Also big fan of anyscale. Their pricing is just phenomenal for running models like mixtral. Not sure how they are so affordable.

I guess the comment was more tongue in cheek wrt to Netflix and chill meme but tbh I have my tv running all day (though not just Netflix) just as background noise so ranking shows by number of hours watched may have lots of noise added to it.

It's one thing to read about it but it was such a nightmare to actually live in Delhi.

My eyes were constantly watery and some of my friends actually had trouble breathing.

Last I went there the Delhi govt was using fire brigades to sprinkle water on trees in an effort to reduce it.

As an indie hacker with a SaaS that has many older generation customers sometimes I feel for ChatGPT.

Even my when users can't find the big blue button that says "Click here to continue >>" and send me angry emails the software is confusing, I have to often start my emails with "I apologize about the confusion. The only one big blue button in the center of the screen that says "Click here to continue >>" can be often easy to miss. Looks great and congrats on shipping. If it were up to me I'd still be deliberating the best framework and design to use for this, and how I can pipe the comments through chatgpt to extract the category, keywords and do things that make it the best blogroll ever.

The thing that most people are missing are, at both time the aim of demonitisation and this is to cut the air supply of opposition parties before election.

In India there are huge cash transactions at time of elections for buying votes, and all sorts of illegal activities to win elections. Demonitisation helped BJP the UP elections which was just impossible, now this will help with the LS elections.

I use it as a replacement for Stackoverflow. I can such ask it questions like `how to unzip a zip file in memory using php` and it just gives me the code (instead of lecturing me why I shouldn't do it).

If that doesn't work, I can ask follow up questions or tell it things like refactor the code for me. It's so much better than sifting through garbage on Google with the SO clones and outdated answers. That is actual value for me.

I have about $1800 in it as I was forced to open an account with them for Stripe atlas. It was a bit more but I think they deduct $25 / mo for the past 3 years. Not really using it since Stripe started in India recently.

Sorry if this is a stupid question but how do I write the json changes to a MySQL database via Php? From what I can understand the json is being updated on the client side via javascript.. but to save the changes do I have to send the entire json doc to server or is it possible to somehow patch the json on php side also? i want to create a google docs type autosave functionality so sending the whole json seems quite wasteful.

I'm learning web programming and this seems quite useful for what I'm doing. Any tips on how to do it in php with this?

Nationwide bans do work. Tiktok was banned in India even though it was quite popular here. After ban its usage almost flat-lined within days.

I think an app like that needs a lot of mass and momentum and side-loading and VPN are limited to a very few savvy users.

Thanks to @dang for getting a Stripe employee to respond and he was finally able to resolve the issue for me.

I think it's time to add another HN tab called Complaints where we can post complaints for the common culprits like Google, Stripe, Pinboard, etc. It sounds backwards but the amount of people HN has helped over years it must add to millions of dollars to priceless things like getting back your email and photos.

Yes I have been victim of the very same thing too. I had to solve hundreds of captchas visiting almost every single website thanks to the centralized infrastructure of Cloudflare nowadays.

The issue is not blocking of IP addresses, the issue is one company hosting almost half the internet and having too much power causing such unintended consequences.

Yes I thought about that too but the thing is so are the search results on Google. You never know the site on the top will give you accurate information or not.

This also avoids the problem of deliberately skewed search results full of affiliate links to promote products veiled as useful content (of which the web is full).
